Libraries are one of the few publicly accessible community resources that are available to all members of the community regardless of age, race, gender, financial standing etc. With a historical focus on community engagement with literacy and access to information, libraries pose as the best candidates for early literacy programs such as First 5 Forever.
Andrea Foley, 2021/03/11 12:35

They are filled with tools and resources to allow people of all ages to expand and broaden their literacy skills, and encourage development of early learning. Libraries are great open and inclusive spaces for everyone within a community. They have all the resources required to support parents and caregivers to deliver the messages of the F5F program, and Libraries and Library staff love to encourage literacy and reading for pleasure.
Tony, 2021/03/01 16:36
Libraries are a great starting point to first five forever because they have very low barriers to entry (thus helping the intervention be universal), and already are involved in the early childhood literacy space, for example; training staff, recruiting for interest in helping young minds, and already running many activities for the age group that could be altered to fit F5F messages.
Fiona Campbell, 2021/03/01 15:43

Libraries are great community hubs that are safe, inclusive and easily accessed across all of QLD. Not only are libraries community focused, but they are equipped with the necessary resources & tools required for the development of early literacy in children.
Jess Britland, 2021/02/23 11:14
Libraries are a safe place where parents that are trying figure it out as they go can come and talk to those with the knowledge and training behind them to give them the information they need. It doesn't always come naturally to know just how important it is to sing and read to your children and even that basic play is still vital part of learning. Libraries are also a great community space to meet other families.
Faheema, 2021/06/11 12:21
I agree, so well said!

Libraries are free and accessible to everyone. They really embody the idea of a universal place or program, which is what First 5 Forever is about. It also allows the resources and opportunities that libraries have to be broadcast to people who may not regularly visit. They are a stable safe place as public libraries are all over Australia.

Libraries may have been chosen as they are already established as hubs that support literacy and lifelong learning for all ages. Most also had already established programs for the 0-5 age group so it was building upon what was already in place.
Fiona Thackray, 2020/12/23 10:51

Accessible, inclusive, safe, non-judgemental, positive, community driven, free, regional and rural, aligns with our vision and why public libraries exist in the first place.
