10 Week Session Overview

Outcome: Participants learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM). Participants are encouraged to follow their imagination, learn together and solve problems through creativity.

Learning Areas: STEM

Time Frame: 10 weeks, not including school holidays, broken up into 2-4 hour sessions

Battery: Ensure that the battery is fully charged each session.
Models: Ensure all models are assembled correctly and function correctly. Ensure the sticky dots are attached and hold on to the mat properly.

Session One

Session Length: 2 hours

Focus:

Getting to know the team members, parents, and mentors
Setting expectations for the 10 week program
- Expectations from Team Members
- Expectations from Mentors
- Expectations from Parents
- Expectations from Library Staff
- Expectations of Achievements during the program
Discuss all session dates and times
Get to know EV3

Preparation

Mentors
- Blue Cards have been scanned and sent to Lego Robotics Coordinators

- Load Mindstorm coding application onto library devices (touch screen,iPads, Laptop)

Session Content

Have everyone introduce themselves, hand out name tags, ensure everyone has signed in and is wearing their name badge
Talk about the 10 week project outline
Talk about responsibilities of each group: Team Member, Mentor, Parent, Staff using the Core Values and Top 10 Tips for Rookie Teams

Homework

The first homework task is to create a code to make the EV3 robot move forward and then back to the starting position. The homework is given out at the end of the session and reiterated in the newsletter.

Session Length: 2 hours

Dive deeper into the Mindstorms coding software with more examples
Start building Lego robotics challenges

Use the training mats to write code for the colour sensor (stop, turn, drive backwards on a color)
If time: start writing code to have the robot follow/drive a long the circle on the the training mat

Homework

The second homework task is to: Build a code to make the robot drive forward until it can read the colour red (starting at black on the training mat); if it reads red stop, pause and drive backwards until it reads the colour yellow, stop on yellow.

Drive along the circle on the mat: Start in the middle of the circle and drive forward. Use either degree or rotations to align the robot.

Session Four

Session Length: 2 hours

Focus:

Complete coding introduction via homework
Complete building challenge pieces

HELPFUL TIPS:

MUST: Ensure the code is saved and stored at the library as well as with the participants.

Time: time how long it takes for the robot to complete each challenge, keep in mind you only have 2.5 minutes for all challenges to be completed.

Speed: Slow and accurate, coming back to base you can increase the speed as accuracy is not as important; but ensure that the robot is completely in base before picking it up, to avoid penalties.

Positioning: Choose one to two starting points; repeat positioning regularly until participant can line up the robot correctly and accurately complete a challenge 3-times in a row.

Session Five - Eight

Start to discuss how you will run the table during the competition:
1. How will you decide who will be the positioner (person handling the robot on the day: selecting program and placing robot on the table) or will everyone get to run a challenge on the day, keeping in mind that this will cost time
2. Who is responsible to reset challenges or get the robot of the table if something goes wrong within the 2.5 minutes
Continue to work on challenge solutions

Homework

Continue to work on your challenge solution by coding for it, planning or designing attachments. Come up with a individual and/or team introduction.

Session Nine - Ten

Session Length: 2 hours

Team Poster and Introduction
Solve Lego Robotics Challenges (up to 5)

IMPORTANT: Have at least one hour of run-throughs, where you time 2.5 min and have everyone take the same positions they would do during Tech Fest. Also train to take challenge pieces off the table and put them back on as this will be happening during the team swap overs between competition times, each team has 15 min for this task.
For the competition day ensure you have:
1. The code secured and in sequence on robot and a USB;
2. The robot is charged and only the competition code is on it;
3. Challenges packed, as each team has to bring their own;
4. Everyone knows where to go and what time to be there.

Continue to work on your challenge solution in coding for it, planning or designing attachments.

Additional Sessions

You should have up to 2 weekend sessions to give the participants enough time to work on their challenges.

Expectations on Parents and Participants

Each team is limited to six (6) members, this has been brought down from ten (10) due to issues in previous years. For example, Mentors could not give each child their attention and this lead to participants being not engaged and loosing interest.

Standards for behavior have been formulated to encourage the right working atmosphere from the start of the program. This led to better working relationships between participants, parents, mentors and staff members.

Expectations for Participants

Miss no more than two sessions
Adhere to core values
Punctuality - if unable to attend contact library staff
Listen to and follow instructions given by mentors and library staff
Respect the library space and material as well as listen to mentors, staff and team members
No fighting
No swearing
Misconduct, you may be asked to step aside for a break or from the program
Don't be afraid to ask, but do not interrupt

Punctuality
Siblings are not catered to, parents need to supervise at all times
Emotional support for team members:
- Parents will be required to assist during the session with practical behavior, team communication and encouragement (focus)
- If at any point you feel your child has issues please encourage your child to ask for help
- Library Staff and mentors are facilitating the program, please respect decisions made
- Talk about how the program is free, the material is provided, members of the public are volunteering their time to spend with their children
- Explanation around achievement expectations in the ten week program and the Tech Fest > Showcase not competition
Tech Fest attendance in Dysart is encouraged

Whilst we do adhere to the game rules in most cases our judges will be reviewing them and sending out any clarifications or changes to teams at the start of the program
You will be supplied with the challenge table, challenge pieces, challenge mat and two training mats. The challenge mat will have to be trimmed and we will advise you of the measurements before the program starts
The following resources are allowed per team; this is to ensure all teams use the same materials:
- Each team will be able to use the Ev3 Core set and expansion kit +
- 1 extra colour sensor
- 1 extra medium motor

Please see below the 10 Week structure for the Isaac Libraries, please feel free to amend the content as needed. As discussed, the first two weeks in the libraries are structured around team building, behaviour and an introduction into Lego Mindstorms. If possible, it would be good if the challenges (Lego pieces) can be built in the last week of Term 2 and basic coding knowledge (as per the below outlined homework) can be taught. In Term 3 you would then start to code for the challenges, build attachments and prepare teams for the Tech Fest. This will give you 8 weeks to complete as many challenges as possible and run a school competition, with the winner going to the Tech Fest. This way your teams spend the same amount of time on the coding and building as the other teams.

In the 1st Session 2hr

Part 1 30min
- Setting behaviour and project expectation
- Watching last year’s challenge video (produced by Isaac)
Part 2 1hr
- Giving hardware overview: motors, brick, connections, sensors
- Building the robot as a team (team building exercise)
- Learn how to clean up the boxes (everything you take out goes to the exact same place unless used)
Part 3 30min
- Overview of the essential coding blocks in correspondence with motors and sensors
- Homework: Download Mindstorms and write a program to make the robot drive forward and back into starting position

In the 2nd Session 2hr

Part 1 1hr
- Revisiting homework and coding components
- Use the training mats to write a code for the colour sensor (stop on a colour)
- If time: Start writing a code to do the circle (training mat)
- Homework: Build a code to make the robot drive forward until it can read the colour blue; if it reads the blue stop. If it reads yellow drive back to start.
Part 2 1hr
- Watch current year’s challenge video
- In pairs of two build a challenge

In the 3rd Session 2hr

Part 1 30min-1hr
- Go through the homework
- Start to work on the circle an oval
- Homework: finish the code for the circle and oval
Part 2
- Re-watch the challenge video and see how the challenges are to be completed
- Set up the challenge mat
- Build more challenges and place them on the mat (make sure to use the mat setup and the video to place the challenge pieces correctly)

In the 4th Session 2hr

Part 1
- Go through homework
Part 2
- Complete building all challenges and discuss which challenge/s should be attempted first
- Homework: come up with a team name, bring a photo for the team poster, start building code for your challenge

Session 5+ 2hr

Work on your challenges
Come up with a team and individual introduction for the Tech Fest
Complete the team poster
