Way One - Using the offset method

This method is quick and easy and utilises the offset tool.

Step 1

When creating a seamless pattern in Photoshop, you can use drawings or cut-out snippets from photos to achieve your desired effect. We used cut-out icons from some State Library of Queensland collection illustrations for this example.

Step 2

Create a square canvas (this is the easiest way to create a pattern tile); I used 1000 x 1000 pixels for the size and 300 DPI or pixels per inch for the resolution.

Pull in the vectors or artwork you will be using to create your pattern. You can also create the pattern using your drawings and just draw them in real time to fill up the space. It is easier to work with all the different elements on different layers so keep this in mind when drawing.

Step 3 - Design the pattern

Lay out the elements until you are happy with the design, then merge all the layers.

Then go to Filter - Other - Offest, and automatically Photoshop will make this half of your canvas, ensure this number is correct for both the horizontal and vertical (for our example the number displayed should be 500), and ensure wrap around is selected and then hit okay, The offset will move the design 500 pixels (or whatever half of your canvas is) to the right and then 500 pixels down. Once this is done the outer sides of the canvas will be repeatable, however, sometimes gaps might appear in the middle of the design.

Fill in these gaps with other elements until you are happy with the design layout. Once you are happy with the design merge these new layers.

Step 4 - Saving the pattern

Now it is time to save this as a pattern! To do this, go to Edit - Define Pattern and give the pattern a name, then click on ok. (Use this for both methods).

Step 5 - Test the pattern!

Once you have saved this as a pattern it is time to test it! Open a new doc that is much larger than the original pattern title. Go to Edit, Fill, Pattern and click on your newly created pattern! It will fill the background of the canvas, you can now zoom in to check the seamlessness.

Your pattern can also be found in the sidebar, under the patterns category.

Way Two- Using the cut-and-paste method

This way is a little bit harder and relies on using rulers to help you align the elements, but does give a seamless look.

Step 1

Import your elements and organise them, best to have them on all separate layers as it will be easier to move them around.

Step 2 - Creating a frame

Create a square outline on a new layer using the rectangular marquee tool. You can set the tool to be an automatic size up in the top toolbar section, and choose a size that would make it a perfect square; for this example, we are using 1000 px by 1000 px.

Step 3

Fill this square with a plain colour using the paint bucket tool. We will use this rectangular block to arrange as a guide to create the repeating pattern.

Step 4 - Creating the pattern

Move your design elements around this rectangle until you are happy with the layout and design. You can allow them to hang off the edges of the shape but you will need to leave a space for them to loop back around.

To achieve this, cut and paste using the rectangular tool where the design element sits over the edge of the frame. Paste the design back into the canvas (Command + V on Mac and Ctrl + V on Windows) and position it on the other side of the shape, but exactly opposite the piece you cut out.

You can drag in rulers to help you better align the elements. Drag rulers in by clicking on the ruler on the side next to the Photoshop toolbar to bring out a vertical ruler and click on the top ruler to bring down a horizontal ruler.

Move these rulers to the middle of the design element to help you line up the other half of the design element on the other side. You can nudge the element by tapping your keyboard's up and down arrow keys.

Step 5 - Saving the pattern

Now, it is time to save this as a pattern! To do this, go to Edit—Define Pattern, give the pattern a name, and click on OK.

Test the pattern in the same way as you tested the other pattern from before, open a new doc that is much larger than the original pattern title. Go to Edit, Fill, Pattern and click on your newly created pattern! It will fill the background of the canvas; you can now zoom in to check the seamlessness.

Final Step - Accessing these patterns

To use the patterns you have created using either method you will need to go to the right-hand sidebar and you should see the option - Patterns under Gradients, clicking on this will open your saved patterns library.

If you can not see the sidebar click the down arrow in the right hand corner and ensure essentials is selected from the drop down menu.

Using Access Logs

If we want more detail, we can use the logstats plugin to generate a server log for our dokukwiki.

Then we can use goaccess to generate some pretty pictures, as well as export boring CSVs/JSON. As a command line tool, goaccess will also take input from pipes, which lets us use POSIX utilities to get what we want.

Installing Goaccess

Follow the instructions on the go access site to install from a repo

Config File and Browser List

The config file default installs to /etc/goaccess/goaccess.conf but for some reason, goaccess expects it in /etc/goaccess.conf. Copy it over and to the same for the browser.list file while you are at it. Set the time and date formats to Apache/NGINX and the log type to COMBINED and we should be good to start.

Parsing the access.log

In this case I've copied the access log from /data/meta/access.log to work on it. We want:

quarterly log
bots and crawlers removed
no internal IP address

so we are going to use a combination of tools for this. First up, lets use sed to grab the date range we want

sed -n '/1\/Jul\/2019/,/30\/Sep\/2019/ p' access.log

then grep with the -v option to exlude bots and dynomapper (this could be a single grep)

grep -i -v  --line-buffered 'bot' | grep -i -v --line-buffered 'dyno'

Finally let run goaccess, excluding our local IP range, ignoring crawlers and output to a html file.

goaccess -e 192.168.0.0-192.168.254.254 --ignore-crawlers -a -o q1report.html

Running all these commands piped (for the next quarter) we get:

To see these logs just copy the resulting html to your web server root. You will end up with something like:

This is pretty, but a more useful output would be csv. A csv output can be expand to include any number of record (in the config) so we can use it to get a sense of the static files downloaded, which can also be set to include only the types of files we are interested in (also in the config). To get csv output, just change the filetype of the output i.e q2report.csv

Accessing Metadata

To work out how many pages have been created, we need to go back to dokuwiki's metadata. What we want is the metadata stored in .changes file for each page and media file, that was created in our date range, and not created by one of our team. The changes file on an newly created page inside /data/meta/ looks like:

“1487560052” is the timestamp in unix time the second is the IP address, “C” means created, and “user” is our users name. Thats all we need.

We only need the first line of each file called .changes. We can do this with the head command.

head  -1 ./*changes

Next we want to narrow our selection to files created in our date range. A quick check of https://www.epochconverter.com/ will give us the date range we want, which is 1569852000 - 157780079. We can use awk to match this.

awk '($1+0)>1569852000 && ($1+0)<1577800799'

Then we want to filter out our internal users with grep, and use the -c option to tally the output.

grep -v -c --line-buffered user

Finally lets turn on the globstar in our shell so we can use head recursively.

shopt -s globstar

Now our piped commands look like this:

head -1 **/*.changes |  awk '($1+0)>1569852000 && ($1+0)<1577800799'| grep -v -c --line-buffered mick

This gives use the pages created in the date range specified. Do find the media created, we can run the same command in the /data/media-meta directory, grepping for our media types.

This is a basic introduction to animation in Procreate. The finished file can be exported as a GIF, animated PNG or a short video depending on your needs.

Making our short animation

The basic concept of this activity is using Procreate to create fun animated drawings over the top of existing photos. You will need an iPad with the Procreate software and an Apple pencil. To begin grab a base image, for this example, I am using a family photograph from the State Library of Queensland collection, you can use any photo you like Onesearch. Firstly think about what fun creative drawings you would like to add over the top and animate. You can also animate text using Procreate as well! (coming soon). For this example, I have drawn a chalk-textured heart that beats over the heads of the three young children in the photo.

Step 1

There are two ways you can go about importing your image! You can select the Photo button in the gallery in the top right-hand corner. Clicking on a photo will open the photo album and you can select your image. The photo will automatically open and import into Procreate.

or you go via the photo album on your iPad and tap on the share icon to open the image in the Procreate app. This will open and import the photo into Procreate. Both ways of importing will work and you are welcome to select which way works best for you.

Step 2

Open the actions tool (wrench icon) in Procreate, open the canvas icon and toggle on Animation Assist to open up the animation panel.

The Animation Assist bar will open at the bottom of the screen, here you can do a few things and also edit the settings. Click on the settings button, adjust the onion skin frames to m.ax and set the opacity to 18%. Having onion skin frames set up is super helpful in viewing the last frame of the animation to see what you have already drawn. To begin, leave the image on the layer and then add a new layer via the layers tab by clicking the ‘+’ and drawing your desired shape using the paint tool. For this example, I use the artist's crayon brush to create a chalk-like effect.

Step 3

We need to ensure the image will remain in the background for every frame, to do this ensure you are on the image layer then go down to the Animation Assist tool and click on the first frame of the animation (which should be your image layer). A menu will appear, from here you want to toggle the Background button to On. This will make the image our background for each frame that we add on top.

Then select Add a frame on the animation bar and draw your shape. Once you have created this shape, select Add a frame again and draw the same shape but in a slightly different way (you can also add a new layer instead of clicking Add frame). For this example, the heart was drawn slightly bigger and moved the lines slightly to the left and right to create a beating effect. Continue this step of adding new layers/frames and drawing your shape slightly differently until you are happy with the desired result. You can even change the colour to create a flashing effect! (this was done for the example). Keep drawing until you are happy, you can also click on the Play button regularly throughout the drawing to see how your animation is looking.

Step 4 - Animation settings

Procreate allows you to adjust the finished animation via the animation assist button. Click on settings to open this up. At the very top, you will see there are three options for your animation;

Loop
Ping-Pong
One Shot

A loop will endlessly play the animation from one frame 1 to the end frame and then start on frame 1 again.

Ping-Pong will endlessly loop but will move from frame 1 to the end frame and then go backward to frame 1 again.

One Shot will run through all the frames once.

Select the type of animation you desire, you can also adjust the frame from this option too. Having a higher number of frames per second will cause the animation to run quickly while a lower number will run the animation slower. Again choose what you like the best! For the example animation, I selected Ping-pong and the frames per second at 16. I liked the ping-pong effect best as it appeared to create a flashing beating heart.

Step 5 - Exporting

To export the finished animation select the actions tool again, move to the share button and go down to where it states ‘Share Layers’.

Here you will find a few different options, usually the best ways to export a short animation are either the Animated GIF or the Animated PNG. These options are best for sharing on social media or via messages.

The animated GIF file format will export a lower-quality file while the animated PNG option will export a higher-quality file. Select the option that works best for your needs.

Procreate text animation

Now that you know the basics of animating in Procreate using drawings, let’s take a quick look at animating using text. In Procreate you can create a range of animating text effects that include flashing text, moving text or text that looks like it is been written or typed.

Typing text animation guide:

Step 1

To create text that appears like it’s typing first choose your desired background layer (for this example I am using a traced image from the SLQ collection as shown how to do in 101 - Intro to Procreate).

Step 2

Now select the add text feature, write out the full word and decide on the size, layout, spacing, etc. Once you are happy with the placement of the text, drop the opacity of this layer down so it’s easier to see what you are animating. Duplicate the text layer and remove all the text from the word but leave the first letter.

Duplicate this text layer and type the next letter, continue duplicating and typing one letter at a time until you have written out the full word.

Step 3

Move the full word layer we first created to the top of the layers and click Play to view your finished animation. Make any further changes and play around with further settings until you are happy.

You can then export and share!

Handwriting text guide

This short guide will show you how to create a handwritten text animation in Procreate! This kind of text adds a cute and unique touch to any illustration or photo!

Step 1

Select your desired background image or illustration! This example will be using a photo, but you can use whatever you would like. Go to the text layer and drop down the opacity to about 50%, we will be using the finished word as a guide. Then select the text layer and hit select area to create an outline section of the text you can’t draw out of.

Step 2

Will the text outlined, select Add a frame on the animation assist bar and then use whatever kind of brush and colour you like to colour in a small section of the text and then duplicate this layer.

Then colour in another small section of the text and duplicate the layer area. Continue this step until the whole word is coloured! To ensure the handwritten effect is created colour in the letters the way you would write them and follow the loops in a direction that makes sense.

Step 3

Once you have coloured in the whole world, delete the original text layer or hide it and then click Play to check out your animation! You can play around with the animation settings too, adding in a few extra frames at the end of the animation of the final word can help with readability.

Flashing text guide

Creating flashing text is pretty easy in Procreate and you can use a range of different colours to create your desired effect! For this example, a rainbow colour palette was chosen, but you could even do this effect in black and white.

Step 1

First, grab your desired background image, then add text, and choose your desired size and front. Remember to select your image layer and turn it in the background of your animation.

Step 2

Select the text layer and hit duplicate, now on this new layer change the colour of the text to a colour you like (ensure the colour is either slightly darker or lighter than the colour before it if using the same colour throughout). Continue this step until you have reached your desired length of animation.

Step 3

Play around with what kind of animation you would like and the number of frames per second, this is all up to you! Then export your text animation via the share button!

You can play around with all of these different animating techniques to create unique animations using text and drawing effects.

WikiRT - SLQ Wiki Reporting Tool

WikiRT is a cross-platform, open source, application developed in-house to analyse, filter and clean up the wiki's access log file and produce accurate data for reporting activity on SLQ Wiki.

Background

Google Analytics is the State Library’s primary method of tracking site visitation. When applied to the SLQ Wiki subdomain, page views and sessions are not accurately reported ¹⁾, and there is no capability to report on downloads as per data dictionary requirements. This issue has been discussed with marketing and web services, with a solution developed by the Applied Creativity team, which was approved, then used to report quarterly numbers. However, the data gathering process was manual, and resulted in unacceptable delays in reporting, so an automated process was developed.

How it works

Step 0 – Converting the Apache log to a Dataframe

Converts log to Pandas Dataframe by specifying separating characters, filtering columns, creating table headers. In addition, converts the date and time into a workable format so that it is automatically recognised as a timestamp and can be filtered and sorted as needed using Pandas.

TIME	Date and time of request (includes time zone by default)
IP ADDRESS	Identifies the visitor
USERNAME	Visitor username (only works if visitor has signed in)
REFERER	What server the request was referred from
REQUEST	The wiki page or resource that was requested
USER AGENT	Browser (and version), Operating system and hardware type used to send request

Step 1 – Date masking

Drops dates outside desired timeframe. The from and to dates are specified in the UI by the user.

Step 2 - Filtering

Filters out any known bots and web crawlers. This list can be updated and added to if there are any more identified. the bots and crawlers have been identified using both manual and automatic methods. These are based on keywords and common SQL injection queries, affecting REFERER, USER_AGENT and REQUEST (SQL queries only).

An example of a crawler that our initial keywords didn’t pick up was WordPress jetmon which every 7 minutes (for the duration of the log) requested the exact same wiki page from the same IP address, using the same REFERER and USER AGENT for a total of approximately 10 000 queries. This is quite clearly an automated request and will therefore be filtered.

There are currently two lists; one for bots and crawlers and one for SQL queries (automated attempt to try to access database information via something called SQL injections).

Step 3 - Sessions

It was advised to only count visits from a user once per session, currently set to 30 mins. Timestamps are rounded down to the frequency before dropping duplicates where both the IP and Time match, only keeping the first occurrence.

Step 4 – Removing rows without user agent information

It is highly unlikely that a legitimate request doesn’t have a USER AGENT. Every modern browser, will send the user agent information. If the server logs a request without this information it either means someone is trying to play the system or there was an error somewhere in the request. as a result, drop all rows without user agent.

Step 5 – Calculating file downloads

Counts requests for specified file types (images not included).

Step 6 – Calculating unique visits

Outputs the number of rows remaining in the file after the processing Step 1-5.

Step 7 – Exporting csv with results

Remaining data is exported to a new CSV file.

WikiRT app features:

Analyze raw Apache access log
Filter out unwanted keywords such as requests made by bots and web crawlers
Removes entries that are missing crucial information
Splits user activity into sessions (30mins currently as to reflect SLQ website analytics)
Outputs clean csv file with results for further analysis

Seamless pattern way one

Creating a seamless repeated pattern with any kind of illustration or graphic.

Step 1

Create a new canvas and ensure it is square at 300 dpi. For this example, we are using a canvas that is 3000 pixels x 3000 pixels.

Step 2

Now, either draw or import your desired image into the canvas. This example uses an illustration created using the State Library Collection as a reference (Link ). When importing or creating your drawing, keep everything within the canvas borders.

Ensuring that nothing goes over the canvas's edge will ensure a seamless repeat and make it easier for you.

Step 3

If you have multiple different drawings/graphics or elements, it is a good idea to group them all together. You can do this by swiping all the layers and clicking the group option in the layers menu.

Step 4 - Creating the pattern

Duplicate your backup layer, then hide and lock it by swiping left on the layer. Then, go to the new layer you just duplicated.

Duplicate the new layer again so there are two copies, and hide the first copied layer.

Step 5

With this new layer selected, go to the Selection Transform tool, click on Snapping in the left-hand corner of the menu, and make sure that magnetics and snapping are turned on and that the distance and velocity are set to max.

Step 6

Now click and drag the whole layer to the left until it is halfway off the canvas. It should snap into place, and some orange guidelines will appear.

Now select another layer and unhide it. You want to move it to the right-hand side of the canvas until it is halfway off and snaps into place like the first layer we did.

You can check to see if it is snapped correctly by zooming in and seeing if there is a gap in the centre of the canvas. If there is a line, and you haven’t moved the layer far enough, you can select it again and tap the right side of the screen (off the canvas) to move it one pixel at a time. Or you can click undo and move the layer until it snaps.

Step 7

Now, you can add additional elements to the pattern. Fill in any gaps with your original design elements from the backup base layer; just remember to stay within the canvas border.

Repeat steps Four to Six with these filled gaps, but this time duplicate this new layer twice and drag it to the top and bottom of the canvas, ensuring it snaps into place. Again, check your work to ensure there aren’t any lines in the centre of the canvas.

Step 8

All canvas sides (top, bottom, left and right) will be repeatable. If you want to add any extra details, you can add them here (remembering not to draw off-canvas) and continue Steps Four-Six again!

You can also set the background colour to whatever colour you like.

After doing this, you will create a repeatable pattern tile!

Step 9

You can export this file as a JPEG, and you should now have a repeatable pattern.

You can double-check that the tile repeats by duplicating the final layer four times.

Select one layer and click the transform arrow to resize the image to the bottom left-hand corner (ensure snapping is on); continue dragging until it snaps (ensure the orange guides lines also appear).

Now do this with layer two and resize it to the top left-hand corner until it snaps.

Repeat this with the third and fourth layers (snapping them to the right top/bottom). After you have done this, you can zoom in and click to see how seamlessly the pattern appears.

Seamless pattern way two

In this way, we will create a seamless repeated pattern using the symmetry tool.

The pattern was inspired by this SLQ collection item - ( Collection Link)

Step 1

Create a new canvas, ensuring it is a perfect square. For this example, we will be using a 3000×3000 pixel canvas with a DPI of 300. It is recommended that the canvas be square and that it have a high DPI for better resolution.

Step 2

Select a background colour. Let's create a guide for our pattern to draw in. We are going to develop this using a diamond shape.

Create a new layer, set the colour darker than your background, and drag the colour to fill the whole layer.
Go to the Select tool, then the uniform button option, and then the snapping settings; ensure magnetics and snapping are on and distance and velocity is set to max.
Click on the green dot at the top of the selected layer (rotate tool) and rotate the layer to 45 degrees.
Then, you want to grab the blue dots to resize the shape till it snaps on either side of the background square.
Resize the diamond shape to fit the background and release the selection by hitting the arrow tool again.

Step 3

Next, we are going to change the diamond layer to multiply and lower the opacity down to under 20%. The diamond layer is going to be a guide, and everything will be drawn within this diamond shape. Lock the diamond shape by swiping to the right (on the layer) and clicking the lock button.

Turn on symmetry by going to the actions (wrench tool), clicking the canvas button, and turning on the Drawing Guide.
Then go to Edit Drawing Guide, click the symmetry button, click on options, select the Quadrant option, and click Done in the top right-hand corner.
This option will ensure that what you draw in one quadrant will repeat in the other ones, helping you create a repeating pattern.

Step 4

Create a new layer by selecting the plus tool in Layers and click on the layer to open the options tab and select the Drawing Assist button. This will apply the drawing guide symmetry settings to this new layer.

Step 5

Begin drawing whatever illustration you want for your pattern, but ensure you stay within the shape.

If you want to add more layers and depth to your pattern, ensure you turn on drawing assist for each layer. If you do not turn this assist on, whatever you draw will not be repeated in the other quadrants.

Step 6 - Creating a repeating pattern tile

Once you have finished creating an illustration you are happy with, we can turn this into a repeating title to make our seamless pattern. Turn off the drawing guide for a moment, go to Actions and toggle it off under the canvas option.

Group all of your drawings together into a new group. If you created multiple groups while drawing, ensure these are all grouped to create one large group that holds all the drawings on the tile.

Turn off the background colour and diamond guide shape.
Take three fingers, swipe down on the screen, and then select and copy all.
Then swipe down three fingers again and hit paste.

Step 7

After hitting paste, a merged copy of the group, known as an inserted image, will appear in the layers tab.

Turn off (hide) the original group.

Step 8

Hit the selection tool, but you will see that the outside square does not fill the whole canvas. This would cause errors in repeating. To solve this, we are going to pop some colour in the top left-hand corner and the bottom right-hand corner. Now, when we select the layer, it will select the whole canvas and ensure it repeats correctly.

Now, duplicate the merged layer (inserted image) until you have five copies. You can easily duplicate by swiping to the left and selecting duplicate.

Select one of the layers with the select tool and ensure snapping is on (magnetic and snapping are on as well). Then, move the pattern to the top of the canvas until it snaps and an orange guideline appears. Then, move it over to the left, ensuring it snaps.

Move another layer to the top and ensure the orange guideline appears. Then, move it over to the right till it snaps.

Repeat this with the other two layers. Move the layer to the bottom until the guidelines appear, then to the bottom left until it snaps. Repeat this with the other layer until it snaps to the bottom right.

After you have moved all these images, you will have a repeating tile, but ensure you remove the little marks made in the corners.

Merge all of these layers into one final merged layer.

You now have a repeated tile that you can use as a seamless pattern 🙂

Extra Step - Smaller pattern

If you want to resize the pattern and make it even smaller, you can duplicate the merged layer and resize it into each quadrant (ensuring it snaps) to create a smaller pattern. You can merge all these duplicates and have a small repeat tile.

Getting Around

On the left you can see our navigation menu. This menu uses the page names and namepaces (more on namespaces later) to create the structure.

On the right is the Table of Contents (TOC) for the page you are one.

Before you start editing or creating, you will need to be logged in. Please check out the Dokuwiki syntax and the SLQ Wiki Contributors Guide.

To Create a Page

Creating a page is as simple as writing a link - to a page that doesn't exist….

The simplest way is to enter a new link directly in the address bar. For example the link to this page is:

If you change the last word from “start” to “my new page” (and you have the correct access privileges) you will be directed to the “create a new page”.

Before you create a page, decide which namespace you want to put it in. For example the prototypes namespace contains all our prototyping documentation. The first page in a namespace by convention is called “start”. So to create a new prototype page in this space for my new pocket time machine I would use this syntax.

Once your page is created, it will appear in sidebar, but if you can't find it - don't panic - check the sitemap, which is in the top page tools menu.

Now you know how to edit - its time to learn some syntax.

To Edit a Page

To edit a whole page, use the edit page button in the floating tool bar, or in the top menu.

Dokuwiki uses simple syntax for generating HTML, somewhat like markdown . The is easy to use, but the editor also has a built in cheat menu, where you can click and add formatting. The syntax keeps our documentation in txt format, ready to be converted to any other format imaginable..

You can also edit just sections of a page by clicking on the edit button below each section.

Modify an Existing Page

1) I'll start with the locks prototype. Mick has helpfully made some prep-production information for use to experiment with. Lets try removing that section from the main page and including it from another page called preprod.

First up, make a page in protypes:lock using;

[[prototypes:lock:preprod]]

2) Right click on the new link - it will be red to indicate the page does not yet exist.

3) Now go back to the lock page and edit it. Select the pre-production information and copy it.

4) Jump back to your :lock:preprod page and 'create page' then paste the pre-production content in.

5) Click save and check it looks good.

6) Go back to your prototypes:lock page and delete the pre-production content, and add in an include tage to point to the new page wherever you want.

7) This will insert the preprod page seamlessly into the locks page. For staff and admin the page will look like this;

But as a standard user this is what you will see.

Create a Pre-Production Page from Scratch

This is simpler - just create your preprod page the same as in step 1) above, and do all your pre-production documentation in there. Once its complete, use and include tag to insert the pre-prod information into your main page.

Exporting Content

You can export a PDF or ODT file of the page you are on by using the buttons in floating tool bar on the right.

Namespaces and Page Names

A page in a dokuwiki is just a text file. You can see it in the bottom right of this page - in this case its called “start.txt”. The page is always the last word in the URL link to the page (provided you are not editing it). A namespace is like a folder or section - a namespace can contain pages or other namepaces.

Using a page as slides

You can set up a page in such a way that you can also view its content as a silde deck, which is great for workshops and inductions. This is through a function called RevealJS

Exporting a page to PDF

Each page will have a button in the top right that allows you to export it to PDF. Great for printing handout notes!

Using the Include Function for Documentation

we can use the include plugin to insert information from one page into other pages.

As a first example we will modify an existing page to create a pre-production page, then we'll make a preprod page from scratch.

Hiding Text

you can hide text from the page but keep it in the editable code by using the hide wrapper. click edit to see the code for the snippet below:

this text will not appear on the page when it's viewed, only when it's in edit mode.

Using Regex to fix formating

Regex is handy to bulk replace syntax. This requires an external editor that supports regex - I recommend SublimeText 3 as it supports standard regex (PHP).

Say I want to replace the tags <wrap em></wrap> with <WRAP hide></WRAP>

The tricky part about this is the closing tag </wrap> is used over and over. Sometimes to close <wrap em> but also with <wrap lo> or <wrap box> .. etc. etc.

As an example say we want to replace

   <wrap em>{{background>::hp8100:082_cpu_thermal_paste_apply_1920.jpg}}</wrap>

With

    <WRAP hide>{{background>::hp8100:082_cpu_thermal_paste_apply_1920.jpg}}</WRAP>

Using the regex to find

    <wrap em>(.*?)</wrap>

we the get the matches for:

<wrap em> matches the characters <wrap em> literally (case sensitive)

Then we get a whole bunch of stuff matching inside the braces (called a capture group)

. matches any character (except for line terminators)
*? Quantifier — Matches between zero and unlimited times, as few times as possible, expanding as needed (lazy)

Finally we have

< matches the character < literally (case sensitive) \/ matches the character / literally (case sensitive) wrap> matches the characters wrap> literally (case sensitive)

Then we need to replace with the regex

 <WRAP hide>\1</WRAP>

Finding big text chunks

It gets a little trickier if we want to find entire sections of text that may include line breaks. In this case we can use the ^ character.

<wrap lo>([^]+)<\/wrap>

This is close to our previous example. We get the matches for:

<wrap lo> matches the characters <wrap lo> literally (case sensitive)

Then we get the first capture group ([^]+)

Displaying External Sites in Dokuwiki

There are a couple of ways to embed external web content in dokuwiki. The easiest way it to use the iframe plugin.

Sidebars

Sidebars lie on the left hand side of each page and contain handy quick links and info.

They work in two ways, the default is that they inherit a simple list of links from their parent in the sitemap (accessed by going to tools>sitemap from that page). the list will contain everything below their parent heading (their sibling pages).

But you can also edit a sidebar as you would a page. To do so, create a page called sidebar under the relevant parent page in the url/sidebar structure.

DokuWiki supports some simple markup language, which tries to make the datafiles to be as readable as possible. This page contains all possible syntax you may use when editing the pages. Simply have a look at the source of this page by pressing “Edit this page”. If you want to try something, just use the playground page. The simpler markup is easily accessible via quickbuttons, too.

Basic Text Formatting

DokuWiki supports bold, italic, underlined and monospaced texts. Of course you can combine all these.

You can use _subscript and ^superscript, too.

Internal links are created by using square brackets. You can either just give a pagename or use an additional link text.

Wiki pagenames are converted to lowercase automatically, special characters are not allowed.

Notes:

Links to existing pages are shown in a different style from nonexisting ones.
DokuWiki does not use CamelCase to automatically create links by default, but this behavior can be enabled in the config file. Hint: If DokuWiki is a link, then it's enabled.
When a section's heading is changed, its bookmark changes, too. So don't rely on section linking too much.

Interwiki

DokuWiki supports Interwiki links. These are quick links to other Wikis. For example this is a link to Wikipedia's page about Wikis: Wiki.

Windows Shares

Windows shares like this are recognized, too. Please note that these only make sense in a homogeneous user group like a corporate Intranet.

Notes:

For security reasons direct browsing of windows shares only works in Microsoft Internet Explorer per default (and only in the “local zone”).
For Mozilla and Firefox it can be enabled through different workaround mentioned in the Mozilla Knowledge Base. However, there will still be a JavaScript warning about trying to open a Windows Share. To remove this warning (for all users), put the following line in conf/lang/en/lang.php (more details at localization):

DokuWiki can embed the following media formats directly.

If you specify a filename that is not a supported media format, then it will be displayed as a link instead.

Fallback Formats

Unfortunately not all browsers understand all video and audio formats. To mitigate the problem, you can upload your file in different formats for maximum browser compatibility.

For example consider this embedded mp4 video:

When you upload a video.webm and video.ogv next to the referenced video.mp4, DokuWiki will automatically add them as alternatives so that one of the three files is understood by your browser.

Additionally DokuWiki supports a “poster” image which will be shown before the video has started. That image needs to have the same filename as the video and be either a jpg or png file. In the example above a video.jpg file would work.

Dokuwiki supports ordered and unordered lists. To create a list item, indent your text by two spaces and use a * for unordered lists or a - for ordered ones.

Text Conversions

DokuWiki can convert certain pre-defined characters or strings into images or other text or HTML.

The text to image conversion is mainly done for smileys. And the text to HTML conversion is used for typography replacements, but can be configured to use other HTML as well.

DokuWiki converts commonly used emoticons to their graphical equivalents. Those Smileys and other images can be configured and extended. Here is an overview of Smileys included in DokuWiki:

Text to HTML Conversions

Typography: About DokuWiki can convert simple text characters to their typographically correct entities. Here is an example of recognized characters.

The same can be done to produce any kind of HTML, it just needs to be added to the pattern file.

There are three exceptions which do not come from that pattern file: multiplication entity (640×480), 'single' and “double quotes”. They can be turned off through a config option.

You can align the table contents, too. Just add at least two whitespaces at the opposite end of your text: Add two spaces on the left to align right, two spaces on the right to align left and two spaces at least at both ends for centered text.

Syntax Highlighting

About DokuWiki can highlight sourcecode, which makes it easier to read. It uses the GeSHi Generic Syntax Highlighter – so any language supported by GeSHi is supported. The syntax uses the same code and file blocks described in the previous section, but this time the name of the language syntax to be highlighted is included inside the tag, e.g. <code java> or <file java>.

When you use the <code> or <file> syntax as above, you might want to make the shown code available for download as well. You can do this by specifying a file name after language code like this:

Please Note: HTML and PHP embedding is disabled by default in the configuration. If disabled, the code is displayed instead of executed.

RSS/ATOM Feed Aggregation

About DokuWiki can integrate data from external XML feeds. For parsing the XML feeds, SimplePie is used. All formats understood by SimplePie can be used in DokuWiki as well. You can influence the rendering by multiple additional space separated parameters:

Parameter	Description
any number	will be used as maximum number items to show, defaults to 8
reverse	display the last items in the feed first
author	show item authors names
date	show item dates
description	show the item description. If HTML is disabled all tags will be stripped
nosort	do not sort the items in the feed
n[dhm]	refresh period, where d=days, h=hours, m=minutes. (e.g. 12h = 12 hours).

The refresh period defaults to 4 hours. Any value below 10 minutes will be treated as 10 minutes. About DokuWiki will generally try to supply a cached version of a page, obviously this is inappropriate when the page contains dynamic external content. The parameter tells About DokuWiki to re-render the page if it is more than refresh period since the page was last rendered.

By default the feed will be sorted by date, newest items first. You can sort it by oldest first using the reverse parameter, or display the feed as is with nosort.

Control Macros

Some syntax influences how DokuWiki renders a page without creating any output it self. The following control macros are availble:

~~NOCACHE~~	DokuWiki caches all output by default. Sometimes this might not be wanted (eg. when the <php> syntax above is used), adding this macro will force DokuWiki to rerender a page on every call

We can use tags to:

audit current content:
- identify existing ip to be documented as content on the wiki
- identify what work needs to be done to bring existing content up to minimum spec
- identify gaps in content and propose how these maybe resolved (whether as an internal work package or by engaging partner org/ volunteer to work on this)
Identify a potential key audience segments and define their information and usability needs
apply style guide to determine minimum spec of content - readability, clarity, truth/ relevance, usability as a resource
identify the work required

We are using now the tagging plugin ²⁾. This plugin uses a separate form that appears on the right sidebar, instead of embedded syntax in the page (which can be slow to load, update, and delete).

Remember that spaces and commas make a new tag, so use underscores or no spaces in your tags.
Clicking the tag admin button lets you edit the tags in the sidebar.
With the admin button off, clicking a tag will search for that tag.
Tags are searchable with the # symbol in the main search.

SLQ Wiki Contributors Guidelines

This style guide is intended to cover the Design and Written tone, style and conventions used when creating or editing content for the SLQ Wiki. Dokuwiki plugins used in the SLQ Wiki are also covered.

Audience and Contributors

SLQ Wiki has content that ranges between:

descriptive
instructional
authoritative
speculative.

The spread of audience and contributors ranges from:

internal State Library staff and volunteers
external State Library (not based at South Brisbane)
local and regional librarians
local and regional councils
arts and community workers
educators and students
public workshop participants.

Defining Tone and Style

Defining a style and tone for such a diverse audience is challenging. By nature a wiki can be collaborative, eclectic and experimental which will add diversity of authors and increase complexity. We have based this style guide on State Library's internal style guide, which we have supplemented with research into external online style guides.

SLQ Wiki Content Types

We've identified three types of SLQ Wiki content. Ideas, Planning, and Releases. Tone and style may diverge from standard State Library style for Ideas and Planning.

Ideas

This is informal, ad-hoc and just-in-time communication. For quick notes, sketching and note-taking³⁾ and discussion.

Workshop prototypes, where rapid iteration is required due to tight deadlines are a good example of this. Other examples include community engagement programs and Hack The Evening community generated content.

The tone can be informal and will change obviously between authors, whose style will contain personal quirks and relaxed language. Spelling, punctuation and grammar may be compromised for the sake of brevity and speed.

Planning

This covers engagement, product and process development, rationale exposition and broad scale planning. Once again tone can be informal, and will vary between authors - but more complex, academic, or domain specific language can be used. At this point writers should be aware of the State Library Style guide and should begin to formalise their style in line with this for pages that may be released.

Release

This content is authoritative, polished and proofed. It is based on competent authority and reliable because it is coming from a person who is an expert or properly qualified. The tone will be consistent throughout the work. Technical details will be finalised and up-to-date as required and the correct State Library Style Guide should be followed. This content includes finalised public workshops, pages about the SLQ wiki (like this one) and public talks give by State Library staff.

Applying the State Library Style

The State Library Style Guides cover a broad range of communications. We should be applying them for all Release content, and be aware of them for all Planning content.

Tone

The State Library Style Guide effectively covers the tone required for the SLQ Wiki.

Except in formal communication, State Library ’s tone of voice is informal, clear, direct and friendly, and audience-focussed.

Our brand, all yours, drives all of our communication, meaning that our visitors, library members or anyone engaging with us, or with whom we would like to engage, is at the centre of all of our communications. This is a significant shift in the way we have traditionally spoken to our audiences. It is important we consider all of our communications through the all yours filter.

Considering our audience/s and potential audiences helps to improve communication and to convey State Library’s key messages effectively. For example:

Old : State Library of Queensland provides access to collections.
New : You can access collections…

As the SLQ Wiki is informal communication, we use inclusive, second person and third person language.

To convey a friendly tone and engage the reader, use the second person ‘you/yours’.
- Eg: You are welcome to visit the Infozone at any time.
To emphasise positive relationships, use ‘you and us’ linking first and second person.
- Eg: We would love for you to contribute to the Flood and Cyclone Mosaic.
To describe State Library activities from an objective viewpoint, use third person (he, she, him, her, his, hers, they, them, theirs, it). This is also appropriate for formal communications.
- Eg: One of State Library's Indigenous Editors is Ellen van Neerven-Currie. She was also a finalist in the 2012 David Unaipon Award for her first novel.

Applying the State Library Web Style

While the basics of formatting your page are carried out by the Dokuwiki platform, the State Library Web Style guide covers the key areas of content formatting that produce high quality conformant content. Once again, if you are working on Releases or Planning you should be aware of the State Library Web Style.

Page names/titles, web paths, headings and subheadings

General guidelines:

use reasonably short titles and headings where possible
omit leading articles in titles and headings, to save space
do NOT underline text

Page names/titles and web paths (URLs) The title of a web page should be:

succinct
meaningful
relevant to the content
different from the titles of the other pages on the website

Remember that page titles are often used out of their original context – in search engine result lists, web paths (URLs), in browser bookmarks/favourites and history lists, and as links on other sites, for example – and must be able to stand on their own.

Page headings and subheadings

Don’t use the same first word in several subheadings on the same page, to avoid visual “sameness.” Eye tracking studies indicate that the left side of the content area of a page gets more eye fixations than other areas. This means that headings should include unique keywords to help people locate what they want as easily as possible.

Capitalisation

Make sure that the first main word in titles, headings and subheadings is capitalised. Don’t capitalise a word such as “the” or “and”, unless it is the first word in the heading. We use sentence case on our various websites.

Numbering and bullets

Avoid using a number series over more than one page. Remember users may be linked to a page anywhere in the wiki. Two styles are used by State Library.

Style one is used for information delivered in independent sentences or paragraphs that can be more easily understood when bullet pointed. Each bullet point starts with a capital and ends with a full stop.

Eg: The program has several aims:

Improving the quality of service provided by public libraries to Queensland communities, especially those experiencing social, economic and geographic disadvantage, is paramount.
Supporting the development of new library services in the community, in particular the provision of low cost access to new technologies, is also important.
Fostering community development by supporting partnerships between libraries, local businesses and community services will be a focus next year.
Raising the profile of public libraries in the community is an ongoing challenge.

Style two is used for information comprising sentence fragments (ie one sentence over the course of the bullet pointed material). The sentence begins with a capital, uses a colon to introduce the list and each bullet item starts in lower case. There is no punctuation at the end of each item, but the last item ends with a full stop.

Eg: SLQ Gallery will:

enable diverse groups of clients to view and interact with innovative and creative multimedia presentations
present interpretations of Queensland’s and Australia’s unique and diverse history and culture
showcase State Library’s diverse collection.

Linking

Do not include too many links within a page’s content, as they may detract from the viewing experience
Don’t include too few either, as the viewer may feel trapped on the page, with no easy way out
The number of links will depend on the content of your web page.

Consider the reason you are providing the links:

Do they add value?
Are they really necessary?

You may be able to compromise by including a list of useful websites at the end of your page.

Internal Links

Internal links is the key functionality of a wiki, and is covered the in the dokuwiki syntax.

External Links

When you are linking to an external site, please do not include the following: [new window] after the name of the site.
The text used as a link should be meaningful enough to make sense when read out of context. Example:
- Correct: Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia
- Incorrect: Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia

Do not use phrases such as “click here” or “this link” as links. Not all our potential users can click. Use content-descriptive words instead, e.g. name of the website, organisation, person, file, etc.

Example of good linking: Wikipedia has an article on NAIDOC.

Example of bad linking: Click here to see a article on NAIDOC.
