The Following is a 1st draft of the slideshow/ session plan for the General Induction. eventually this will be developed as a Powerpoint style slideshow with and an accompanying voice over narration.

Each session will start with the facilitator welcoming the participants individually and checkin them into Eventbrite When its time to begin the facilitator will welcome the group to the Fabrication Lab and acknowledge the traditional owners

I’d like to begin by acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the land on which we meet today, the Yaggera and Turrbal people and pay my respects to Elders past and present.

The Edge

The Edge is State Library space for creativity, ideas and experimentation. There are regular programs, events, workshops, facilitated meetups and community lab times in the space on Level 1 as well as here on level 0.

Fabrication Lab

The Edge basement houses the Fabrication Lab, a creative space with a host of resources for you to bring your creative visions to life. It is an open access community makerspace with equipment and tools available to anyone with a creative idea. If you have a hobby, project, assignment or an idea for a business that requires a laser cutter, soldering station, 3D printer, sewing machine or CNC Router, The Edge’s Fabrication Lab can help. You just have to be over 16, wear covered footwear and have completed the relevant safety inductions.

Purpose of The Edge Fabrication Lab and general information

Opening Hours

The Fabrication Lab is open to the Public from 12-6pm Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. we call these times Community Lab

On Thursday nights from 5:30 - 8:00 the Fabrication Lab hosts our makers meetup Hack the Evening.

At other times during the week we run ticketed workshops, run community engagement projects and work with local community organisations. Check out the Whats on page on the SLQ website to find out more.

The fabrication lab has a kitchen so members and staff can take a break to have snack, a tea or coffee and a chat. However other parts of the fab lab contain sensitive equipment and toxic substance so please don't consume food anywhere else in the Fabrication Lab

Level 2 and 3 Inductions

Level 2 Independent Machinist
Level 3 Supervisor/ Facilitator Induction

Individuals seeking to complete this level of induction need to demonstrated an advanced understanding of the tool/ plant. The Edge uses an Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) style process demonstrate competency.

Key Criteria

Individuals must demonstrate competency in

Training participants in the safe and correct use of the Tool/ Plant. identify and preempt unsafe, improper or inefficient use of the tool /plant by participants. training and supporting participants’ application of workflow up to and around the tool/ plant training participants basic maintenance and care a working knowledge and be able to support participant application of stock control and administrative procedures connected to the use the tool basic troubleshooting on the tool/ plant delivering competency based assessment and possess a capacity/ experience to support participants with a range of backgrounds and learning styles to demonstrate competency.

Evidence of Competency

Three forms of evidence of competency are required for each criteria. In this case the three forms of evidence will be

1. Assessor Observation Report during training simulation

2. Candidate written response to Safe Work Instructions and Induction Materials

3. Candidate notes on Level 1 Induction Paperwork and FLS Procedures.

as well as any other evidence candidates wish to present ( CV examples of work etc)

Occupational Health and Safety Law in Australia requires that employers, employees and other people have a duty of care to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in a work space. Here at The Edge this means

The State Library has responsibility to ensure the space is a safe workplace for staff and patrons,
Staff have a responsibility to ensure policy and procedures are developed and followed by everyone in the space and
Fabrication Lab Users have a responsibility to follow procedures and report any safety concerns, breakages, injuries or near misses to staff.

Key Safety Principles and Procedures

Wear the right safety gear - its there for your protection.
Correctly use the right tool for the job -Most injuries come from misusing tools.
Clean up as you go - accidents happen in untidy spaces.

Always wear appropriate clothing and covered footwear -you don't want you clothes to get caught up in machinery and appropriate footwear protects your feet and help prevent slips and trips.
No kids under 12 - There is hazardous equipment & substance used in the Fabrication Lab.
Ask questions if you have any doubts - its easy to ask and you could prevent an injury.
Follow the procedures and the directions of staff.

Fabrication Lab Supervisor

One of the most important safety measures we have in The Edge Fabrication Lab is that we have a member of staff, The Fab Lab Supervisor, rostered on whenever the Fabrication Lab is open to the public.

The Fab Lab Supervisor

Ensures everyone's safety and wellbeing are protected.
Makes sure everyone feels welcome and that the space is a productive environment.
Assist commumnity to engage with the resources and programs.

Ensures resource and the space are cared for.
Can connect community with information and networks.
is in charge in the case of an emergency.

Hand Tools Induction

Before anybody picks up a knife, handles a hot glue gun, engages a screwdriver or any other hand tool for that matter, we want… we need to be confident that people know what they are doing and are going to be safe in our space. The Edge is working towards everybody who enters the Fabrication Lab (except if your on one of our regular tours) completing this basic hand tools induction. It doesn't matter if you've been working with tools all of your life or have never actually used a screwdriver by the end of this short session we can be confident you know the basics of how to use these tools and what safety concerns you should be mindful of when using hand tools.

Safety Tips for Hand Tools

Only use tools and equipment that you have successfully completed an Edge induction for.
Use the right tool for the job.
Take it off, Tie it back or Tuck it in.
Keep the work space tidy.
Watch out for hot tools. you dont want to burn yourself or start a fire
Clamp or secure your work before you apply a force
Wear the right safety gear.
Only use tools you have done the induction for.
Check the tag and if it looks safe to use.
If you are starting to feel frustrated take a break.

Inductions- software & technology

Throughout the year there are a series of induction sessions in the fabrication lab, recording studio as well as the digital media lab, which give people (you) the basic skills, safety awareness and knowledge of how to efficiently use the resources on offer.

Book and complete a safety induction for your chosen resource, and then it’s yours to book and use for free during Community Lab times. Inductions are very popular and generally run once or twice a month, with just 5-10 participants in each; so you’ll need to book ahead of time. Each induction covers the safety procedures for the resource, along with how to operate it, presets and basic troubleshooting. During your induction, you will use the resource to make your own mini project, supplied by the facilitator.

General Induction - Fabrication Lab

Laser Induction:

Our laser can cut and etch wood, plastics, paper, cloth and leather quickly and accurately. In this induction you will learn what software you can use, how to prepare design files and how to operate the machine safely. Use your creativity to personalise the design template provided, and take home your first project.

3D printing

Our 3D printers turn a virtual 3D model into a solid plastic object. You can create the virtual model from scratch, or make one from an existing object using a 3D scanner. In this induction you will learn what software you can use to create your model, how to load it into the printer, and clean up the product,. Use your creativity to personalise the design template provided, and take home your first project.

Sewing

Mend or make with our sewing machines to revive an old favourite, follow a pattern or test your design innovations. In this induction, you learn how to set up a machine, cut and pin, sew straight and make a handy tote bag you can take home.

Electronics Bench

Our electronics workbench has soldering and test equipment that you can use to build, troubleshoot and repair your electronics projects. In this induction you will learn about some common components and how to safely use the equipment as you assemble a simple project kit.

CNC Router

Our CNC router is an industrial scale machine that can cut and shape a sheet of plywood into flat-pack furniture, storage units or a cubby house from designs created using 2D drawing software. In this induction you will learn some practical tips for good designs, how to choose and use the right tools and operate the machine safely using specialized software. Use the template provided to make your own handy stool to take home.

Recording Studio Induction

Book and use the Recording Studio for free, once you’ve successfully completed your induction.

The Edge’s Recording Studio provides access to near-professional equipment and specialist software for recording, mixing, editing and mastering. Recording studio hire is free; however you first must complete a Recording Studio induction.
