Prusa i3 MK3s+

The Prusa i3 MK3s+ is a successor to Original Prusa i3 MK3 with hardware and software upgrades which lead to improved reliability and ease of use and assembly.

The Edge purchased 5 Prusa i3s printers to replace the ageing Up mini 2s.

FILAMENT MATERIALS

In theory, the Prusa i3 Mk3s+ can be set up to print using a range of filaments including:

Below describes guidelines for coordinating public access of the 3D printers.

Prusa Slicer

Prusa Slicer is the version of 3d Slic3r adapted for the Prusa i3 MK3S

Prepping your 3d model for printing


1	Open the PrusaSlicer application. If you are prompted that a Configuration Update is available, click to install the update before proceeding further.
2	Use the Add button to load models into PrusaSlicer
3	Delete Delete All buttons remove the model(s) from PrusaSlicer opens the detailed settings of print , filament and printer


4	Use Move, scale, rotate , Place on Face and cut tools to prepare the model to printing in the most efficient/ effective orientation,

5	Select a Quality / Speed setting for your print
6	Material selection (on Fabrication Lab computers, only filament brands/polymers provided in the Lab will appear in the dropdown list)
7	Select a Supports setting


8	Select an Infill percentage
9	Click Slice to slice the model into layers in the Z axis and select layers preview to view infill land


10	Check the Sliced Info for the cost and how long its going to take to print before exporting your gcode The Edge charges 15cents / gram and your print needs to be finished before the Lab Closes - talk to the Fab Lab Supervisor if you have a long job you'd like to do .
11	Generate and export gcode to the SD Card by clicking the Export G-Code button .

Run Daily Setup Check script (found in the testing folder on the SD card) this will run a Z axis calibration extrude and print a small test print.

Starting Your 3D Print

1	Obtain an SD card from the Fab Lab Supervisor and export a .gcode file to the card from the PrusaSlicer app.
2	Insert the SD card into the slot on the side of the LCD screen assembly
3	Using the Control knob, navigate to and select your file on the SD card (rotate knob to scroll, push to select). The last file saved to the card will appear at the top of the list. The printer will automatically commence heating the nozzle and the bed to the correct temperatures for the chosen filament; printing will start when the target temperatures are reached. This can take several minutes.
4	Watch the first few printed layers to be sure filament has attached to the bed properly (5 to 10 minutes). After this you should check the progress of your print every 10 mins. Patrons are not to leave their print unsupervised.

Failed Print Procedure

If the Print Starts to fail…

1	For a catastrophic failure press the Reset (X) button. This will abort the job and force a full reset of the printer.
2	Alternatively, use the Control knob to select Pause Print
3	Speak to the Fab Lab Supervisor about why you think it failed

Removing Your Print

Removing printed objects from the steel build sheet is usually easy because of the ability to remove the sheet from the heatbed and flex the sheet. The difference in thermal expansion between the steel sheet and plastics used in 3D printing also helps with detaching prints after the sheet and print have cooled down.

When the printing is finished, carefully remove the steel build sheet from the heatbed by lifting the sheet at the front corners while applying an equal and opposite force on the hotbed where the thumbprint icons appear. The sheet and bed will be hot unless allowed to cool—particularly if printing with PETG filament. Once the steel sheet is removed from the hotbed, it will cool faster. Do not try to remove printed objects from the sheet while hot, as the sheet coating may be damaged. Once cool, flex the steel sheet and the print/s should pop off.

If you continue to experience difficulty with removing a printed object, you can gently introduce a non-metal flat spatula with rounded corners underneath the object to prise it free without damaging the PEI.

Routine Maintenance

Each time the the printer runs out of Filament the FL Supervisor will conduct the following Routine maintenance:

Run a 10cm length of nozzle cleaning filament through the printer by selecting the Nozzle Clean script on the SD Card.
Clean extruder teeth with brush and blow clear with canned air
Wipe smooth rods with clean of any visible grease or dirt build up with a piece of paper towl.
Load new roll of filament into the machine by preheating the machine (via LCD menu) and inserting filament into the throat of the extruder.
Wash Flexible Steel Printing Sheet with clean chux or sponge in warm soapy water (DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLEANERS), rince well and dry with paper towel.
Run Routine Maintenance script on the SD Card this will run a Z axis calibration check and print a small test print. Verify result.
