3D Industries Australia - Joey 3

The Joey is a medium format 3D printer, on-loan from 3D Industries. It has proved reliable and is used when a larger build platform is required.

Below is the information from 3D Industries:

The Joey has a frame measuring 500 mm wide by 500 mm deep and 500 mm tall. It has a standard build platform size of 300 mm by 300 mm.

Objects can be built up to a height of 190 mm.

The Joey Wombat and Possum utilizes a CoreXY mechanism to move the extruder carriage in the X and Y axis at the top of the frame. The heated build platform descends as each layer is printed.

The power supply is contained within the frame and the filament spool holder can be mounted in different positions.

The printers are controlled by means of an LCD screen controller - no connection to a PC is required. Objects to be printed are stored on an SD card in gcode format.

The hot end extruder used is the latest 3D Industries Aluhotend and an automatic gap sensor is included to ensure the correct clearance between the nozzle and the bed.

Compute Stick

Compute Stick is a portable PC thats great for signage. Here's some instructions for setting up a video to autoplay MP4 off a usb stick on the digital signage screens on level one of the edge( or any other HDMI equiped screen for that matter)

Put your mp4 file inside a folder named “file” on your usb stick
Plug the compute stick into the HDMI 2 port on the screen and select this port as the input for the screen
plug in 5v power supply
Compute stick should fire up, and as long as the compute stick has the right bat file installed, it should auto play your mp4 file.

If it doesn't

go to the Bat file in c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\windows\start menu\Programs\StartUp and make sure that this autoplayscript is picking up from the usb stick

Safety Information

Here is the safe operating use of the machine, here are the potential hazards.

Cuts (from needles and scissors) make sure when the machine is embroidering you keep your hands away from the needle.
Eye strain (overworking and frustration) Take breaks regularly and look for some resources for problems.
Crush injury (manual handling) Use the correct manual handling procedures
Electrocution (cords) Cords and cables within the space regularly tagged and tested, if there are any issues let a staff member know.

Never lift the machine with the Embroidery unit attached to the machine and always check the safe operating procedures regularly and ask a staff member for help if you have any problems or concerns.

Make sure you read the SOP for this machine.

Creating Embroidery Designs with Inkscape and Ink/Stitch

You can create your own designs to use with the embroidery machine using Inkscape a free, open-source software for creating scalable vector graphics. With the free Ink/Stitch plugin, you can convert your vector designs into embroidery files.

Ink/Stitch allows you to export your vector designs as .pes files, which can then be saved to a USB drive and inserted into the embroidery machine. The .pes file format contains coded instructions that the embroidery machine reads to stitch your design onto fabric.

1. Select File > Export.
2. Click on the file name to change the save location and rename your file if needed.

Calibration instrument: benchtop multimeter with 6.5 digits display, 5A electronic load with milliampere display.

Calibration condition: Preheat for 2 minutes after switch on .
Being into calibration mode, press continuously button M4, and switch on at the same time until current and voltage displays blink. At this time, C.V indication is on, which means the power supply is in the mode of zero calibration.
1.      Voltage Zero Calibration: connect the positive pole and negative pole of the multimeter leads into the output terminals respectively. Then, watch the voltmeter and adjust the knob to make the multimeter in the range 0v – 5mv. After that, the zero calibration is over. Press M1 to save the calibration value.
2.      Current Zero Calibration: press the button VOLTAGE/CURRENT, and the current display of the power supply blinks. Connect amperemeter to adjust the current value in the range 0MA – 1MA. Press the button M1 to save the calibration value.
3.      Voltage full-range calibration?adjust voltmeter in the shelf of voltage test. Press M4 and then C.C indication lights on, which means full-range calibration. And then the current display blinks, turn the knob to adjust the voltmeter between 30.01 – 30.02. Press the button M1 to save the calibration value.
4.      Current full-range calibration: press the button VOLTAGE/CURRENT, the current display of the power supply blinks, which means it is in the mode of current calibration. At this time, connect the amperemeter(or electronic load), and then adjust the current value to 5.000A±5MA. After that, press the button M1 to save the calibration value.
5.      Switch off, and then restart the power supply. The calibration ends.

High-Resolution Laser Scanner: Konica Minolta Vivid 9i (a.k.a VI-9i) Non-Contact 3D Digitizer

Before Starting

You will need a general induction in order to use this machine, and a staff member will also need to train you how to use it. We don't currently have a formal induction or booking process for this machine as it's not commonly used, come in during an open lab or hack the evening and chat to a staff member to get started. :)

User Instructions

Picking a good item to scan

If you would like to scan a part of a human, it's nearly impossible (and dangerous!) to do directly. Instead, make a body cast of the part of the person and either scan the cast if all areas would be accessible (e.g just the front of a face for a mask) and flip it later in the software, or make a blank from the cast in plaster, and scan that.

Different Lenses for different depths of feild (focus). Macro has most range, tele least, middle is middle and a good place to start.

Safety

It's a laser, a low level one but you do not want to look into the lenses. Please also only use the laser in a position where the laser is facing a wall/random passers-by can't accidentally look into the lens.

Scanning Instructions

Picking a good item to scan

Starting to Scan

Remove dust covers.
Turn on laser scanner. It will initialise and ask you to remove lens cap and click any button on the machine. Do so.
Remove the 2 lens caps (it has two lenses because there is a 'photo' camera on top which is used for texture and autofocus and a laser scanner on the bottom, used to capture the geometry. Screen on back of scanner should now say “STANDARD 800MM”
Turn on stage (turn table) box on top of computer
turn on PC (and monitor if necessary)
log into edge user (no password)
open the application called PET from the task bar at the bottom of the screen.

Go to File>Import>Digitiser>StepScan

If should come up with a notification saying “Chart Data Settled” hit ok

It will bring up this screen

Hit [Stage Apply] to connect to the turntable. If it doesn't connect successfully, turn the control box for the turn table off and on again and hit [stage apply] again (the control box sits on top of the PC Tower) Arrange your object so it is in the centre of the screen, on top of the stage/turntable.

Put your object on the turntable

Look at the left black box in the step scan window, if you can't see your object, you may need to raise or lower your item above the turn table until the object is entirely visible in the left black box. (don't use the white angled calibration panels, a cardboard stand can be handy! as can the black plasticine) Before:

Click [AF] to autofocus the camera and laser.

The image should become clearer

Hit [AF] to focus the camera/laser. It will make a little rustling noise. hit [scan] to test the laser. If you get an autofocus error, it's probably because the line of sight from the laser (at the bottom) to the object is obscured by something. click [Option] and in the window that appears, click [Apply]

If an error appears saying “Turntable Not found” then check that the turn table is plugged into the connector box on top of the PC and that box is plugged into the PC and into power (and that all the connectors are properly seated in their sockets and arranged as pictured). Check Port: is set to “COM2” and Model is set to “SHOT-602” then hit [Apply] again. If it still comes up with an error, try switching the connector box off and on again.

when the Turntable is properly connected it will rotate a bit, and the Stage parameters will grey out as pictured

The rotation steps indicate how many degreed the turntable/stage will move before starting each scan. More of these will generally equate to a more accurate scan. 90 degrees will scan 4 times (because 90 fits into the 360 degrees of a circle 4 times). 60 degrees will scan six times, and you can set your own rotation steps in the 'other' field.

30 degrees generally produces a good quality scan.

Hit [OK] when you are happy with your settings to return to our preview window.

ensure the turn table is positioned so the side the cable is coming out of is facing away from the camera/laser, and that Current Angle is set to 0.

click AF to focus it. then click the checkbox by Distance to lock the autofocus.

click scan check preview, you want no background showing and you want the centre of you model in the centre of the colour band. Tick the distance and edit it if need be, then repeat the scan.

once well focused

Open options. Change angle to 30 Tick Autoscan Click scan and confirm. It will now do a full rotation of your object.

If the stage/turntable makes a grinding noise your object is too heavy, so you will have to remove the stage do it manually instead. storing each scan and rotating it manually.

Aligning models

After the step scan is complete you will need to align and merge your models. Click on the top left window and switch the view to wireframe

Select all the objects in the left panel so they're highlighted blue.

Click the Toggle Points button to select all the points in the scene (the points are like the corners of all the faces in the object). Nothing will change on the screen, but it will have selected everything.

Click Show/hide vertices to see the points

Click Select>Select by elements select all the parts in the right-hand list so they show blue.

go build>registration>initial>auto

it will ask you to select a base element, chose your most complete scan, if this is your first rotation then just select your first scan.

it will take some time to align them then a popup will appear confirming the elements are registered.

After this you can then go Build>registration>fine>elements and let that run to make it even nicer.

Then you can go build>merge>ok and give it a name to combine these into one model, and remove the old scans by selecting them in the menu on the left, right clicking and hitting “delete elements”

Then you can move your real-life object to a different orientation and repeat the step scan and registration/alignment to capture other parts of the model.

combine this merged file with the new scans until you have your whole object complete.

Exporting

Grab the little white angled block (calibration chart) on the table and replace your item with it on the turn table. Position the turn table as per the picture and check that Current Angle is set to 0. Click [AF] then [Scan]. the machine will make shutter and beep sounds.

If it comes up with an error, or just a coloured scan, move the position of the turn table (with calibration chart on it) and try again.

When successful it will come up saying “chart data settled and saved.”

you can now replace the calibration panel with your object again.

Troubleshooting

Error Codes

make sure laser cover is open and press any key = remove lensed caps and press any key. You may have to open the calibration box and clear away any items between the scanner and the calibration box too. *needs work*

Calibration

If you are experiencing issues the laser may need calibration. To do so open calibration panel, there are two sizes, depending on which lens you are using. The big one (opened on top) works for the wide angle, the small one (opened at the back) works for the other two lenses.

Go to File>Import>Digitiser>StepScan, hit [AF] to autofocus it, then hit scan. It should make some whirs and beeps and present you with a scan of the calibration panel:

Yay! It scanned. click [Calibration] and OK and it will scan it again and set the calibration. Hit Cancel, close the calibration panel and place your object on the table.

Changing Lenses

You can change lenses to change the overall field of view of the laser, to essentially scan larger or smaller objects. 3 sixes are available; tele (largest), middle, macro (smallest). *add table of sizes here* When changing the lenses, it's important to ensure you are placing 2 lens caps on the removed lens and removing two from the new lens. The lens caps are on either side of the lens. it's very easy to miss one and then nothing works. :)

It's also extremely important to insert new lenses by matching the red dots at all points copy instructions from manual else the calibration will not work.

Smartphones

We are currently trialing a staff portable device for use when supervising the fablab. The rationale is that while nominally 'in the office' fabrication lab supervision duties currently cover about 500 square meters of floor space, with only one staff laptop available. This results in missed emails, messages, etc.

The aim is to have a single device type that we can trial, document, and if proven viable, roll-out for all programming staff. The devices then stay onsite for use by staff members.

Usage Cases

We researched android handset(s), that cost between 300 and 400 AUD that are less than 2 years old as of 2017, and have unlockable bootloaders.

Why Android

At this point Android phones offer the most cost effective way of getting the functionality we require. With our in-house knowledge of linux tools, we can create a level of customisation and adapt the chosen devices.

Xiaomi mi5

The mi5 is a mid-range chinese market smartphone. As of early 2017 it had an relatively easy to unlock bootloader, however this process has gotten more restrictive in later versions and as of August 2017, there is a 72 hour delay from permission to unlock to the unlock software being able to actually run.

The Up! Mini is a consumer desktop 3D printer, The Edge has four Up! minis available for public use.

Inductions

Daily Maintenance:

Snip off 50mm filament just above intake, withdraw this and extrude freshly snipped end of filament
Check filament remaining on the spool.

Weekly Maintenance:

Swap nozzle for nozzle that has been left in acetone for the past week.
Calibrate Bed Height
Test Print
Brush out any accumulated dust and filament below the bed of the machine.

Some notes on Filament

For some time the edge has had prefered brands of filament - Up brand and Zortrax Brand ABS

These brands have been successfully test in our machine and produce consistent results. The use of other brands of abs is to be avoided to ensure these publically bookable assets remain accessible.

Repairs to Up Mini 1

Some repairs are being attempted on the retired Up mini 1. This includes fitting an after market “smoothie board” sourced from ebay. Instructions for this board are attached below

Inserting the Perf board

More information about the different boards can be found in a section below.

Clean the board

Make sure the surface of the perf board has been properly scraped, the board should be free of protrusions. Small amounts of filament inside the holes should have little effect on the grip but should be removed for best result.

Insert the board

Insert the board as shown on the pictures. Support the print bed from underneath while sliding the board in or out with the thumbs.

Do not apply too much pressure to the bed itself as this may tamper with the calibration.

If more pressure is needed, compensate by applying equal pressure from underneath the bed.

Note the board only goes in one way as the cutout in the middle is not completely centered.

Adding new filament

To remove filament:

Remove the two top panels from the printer case
Retract the filament tube, exposing the filament
In the Up Studio Maintenance tab, click 'withdraw'
Keeping light upwards pressure on the filament, wait for the print head to heat
Remove the filament when you feel it being pushed backwards by the feed gear
Trim the end of the filament to an angle to allow easier reinsertion
Wind the filament back around its spool, securing the end to prevent tangles

To install filament

Feed filament down into the feed path as far as it will go
In the Up Studio Maintenance tab, click 'extrude'
Keep light downward pressure on the filament and wait for the feed gear to grab onto it
Push the filament tube down into the feed path
Replace the top case panels and check the back door is closed

UP Studio

Once the printer is connected to a laptop running UP Studio the printer's touch screen option will not be available. Almost everything can be done from UP Studio, so it's not really a problem.

Initialize

The first step that needs to be undertaken before printing is to initialize the printer. That can be done by pressing the initialize button on the left hand side menu. Most other options/button will be grayed out until this step has been completed. The initialization should only take a minute or so and you will be able to see the bed and the printer head move.

You will be able to see the name of the connected printer (e.g. “Up 3”), it's temperatures (Nozzle and Bed), which type of fillament is currently being used as well as an indication that it is ready to print.

Load Model

By pressing the + Button in the main menu you can add models, primitave 3D shapes or an image (which you can create a 3D model of). The model should show up in the 3D view area.

Maintenance

Before each print you should make sure that the filament is extruding properly. This can be done by going to the maintenance menu and clicking “Extrude”. If you want to make changes to the material or options, this can be done here too. Not recommended as you get prompted when it runs out.

Calibration

Automatic nozzle height can be set from the touch screen on the UP Mini (Calibrate → Auto) when not connected via USB. Manual Calibration allows more accurate calibration of the bed using 9 points across the printing board, and can be done in the software by selecting 'Manual' in the Calibration menu.

Setting up the model

There are several setting on the Tools menu at the top right of the screen. Click each icon for more options. Hover over the icon with your mouse to get a tool-tip.

Printing

There are a handful of settings you need to check before printing.

Layer Thickness This option lets you determine how fine each layer is, essentially the thinner the layer the finer the print. This is an improvement from the original UP Minis (0.35mm), and it will have an impact on printing times.
Infill Choose the density of the print's interior. This option determines how sturdy it will be and the structural integrity of the print. You now also have the option to just print an exterior without any infill.
Quality Once again, a setting that determines the quality of your print at the cost of time. Lower quality generally results in a rougher print.
Nozzle offset Tweak the height of the nozzle relative to the bed. This should almost never be needed, tweaks should be done in configuration menu.
Option Clicking on Preferences gives you more options, covered below.
Sleep Puts the printer to sleep after the print is done (Shouldn't be used as the print shouldn't be left unsupervised).

There are some advanced options in this menu that shouldn't be touched unless you know what you are doing. The ones that are more common to use are under the “Other” section:

Unsolid Model Use this option for prints that have intersecting solids or when you are having trouble printing your model due to errors.
Thin Wall Reduces the thickness of your model's outer wall
Preheat Preheats the bed before printing (I believe this is done anyway)
Easy to peel This option makes the model easier to remove from the board but will make it easier for the print to lift

Printer Boards

There are two types of boards that come with the UP Mini 2: M-PB-3 and M-PB-2.

M-PB-2 (UP Flex)

Some information from Jason at Tiertime.

The official name of the board is called UP Flex, which mean it can be flexed to make prints easier to remove. The UP Flex print board is not as durable as the perf boards, do not set the nozzle to close to the surface, otherwise prints will be difficult to remove. For mini2 the thickness of the UP Flex and Perf board are made to be the same, the you do not need to measure the nozzle again after changing print boards between these 2. (For UP BOX or UP BOX+, there is 0.4mm difference > between the 2 kind of print boards) You can use the board for many times if used with care, do not scrap the board with violence. Another tip for the UP Flex is, to print large ABS without any warpping, you can apply some ordinary glue stick on the surface, this will hold the ABS very well. You can even apply some cooling to the ABS when glue stick > is applied.

M-PB-3

This is the standard perf board which is recommended for use with the printer. It is durable and is easy to scrape.

TIPS

Make sure UP Studio is running before connecting the Printer
When loading your model into UP Studio and it shows up as red, it contains errors and may not print properly (or at all). Try fixing the problem by going to the Tool menu selecting More (4 horisontal lines) and selecting “Fix Errors”.
