Making a Sign: Cut and Prototype

Preparation

Talia the designer to work with the composition of the sign that community have come up with

Prepare the file to be able to be cut on the CNC

Prepare wood to continue making the false wall

The Plan

Break off into groups of interest:

1. Cutting a letter on the CNC

2. Building the false wall

3. Consider and talk about lights and the colour scheme.

Solidify the design:

- Consider colour

Reflection

There were 6 people that attended this session. We began by looking at the design that Talia had pulled together based on the ideas last week. We discussed the colour scheme. We went upstairs to look at the space and to evaluate how things will look in it. We took up a piece of the false wall to see it in the space. Considering things like:

- eye sights

- safety

- access to the fire gear

- light that already exists up in the alcove

We then came back and began to put together the maquette of the false wall and trialled some false wall texture ideas. At this point we broke up with some working on the maquette and one community member stepping forward to work in Illustrator applying colour.

The group then shared back to each other what they had been working on:

It was decided that some of the font should be changed to pull the two groups of texts together. It was decided that 'Join the' would be the same font as 'The'. This has been sent to Talia and we will continue with the colour pallete with these changes. join_the_wonder.zip

Making a Sign: Fabrication

During this session we will aim to have everyone engaged in using their hands working on an element of the sign. Breaking off into groups of interest.

The Plan

Breaking off into 3 groups

1. Assembling false wall: Mick has cut it already

2. Sign design for fabrication : finalize the tagline as well as the composition for all of the text. The aim will be to design and then laser cut a small version.

3. Grammar of Light- pulsing, chase, black lit, light and shadow. Choices based on the brief.

What actually happened

5 people turned up and we worked with computers digitally to design the sentence 'Join the wonder'

The option was also given to draw and trace using the typography process from the design session (see here Design session )

From this work we began to draw out the similarities (The Wonder emerged as being the main feature to the sign, that everyone liked it being on some kind of angle)

Then we saved designs to the usb stick and cut the designs on the laser

We began to play around with composition (using the laser cut letters) as a group. we tried out many configurations and landed on a design that the group all liked.

Reflection

Mick and I made a decision to be fluid with the plan based on the fact that we didn't know who was going to show up to the session. We ended up having 3 people show that had been at the design session. 2 new to the process. All had varying degrees of Illustrator skills. All were engaged in this part of the process and thinking. Sharing back their designs - some seemed shy. All were keen to see how the laser works and to transfer ideas into 3D.

One community member had come in earlier in the day and begun to build the false wall. He made one part of 4 parts that we will require. He will come in again next week to prepare all the wood so that others can also help to build the wall as well in next Thursdays session.

I have no idea that this session is helping The Edge to design a sign, I thought it was a session for us to design our own sign. It is a little bit confusing and not much guideline. However, Mick and Emma are very helpful and innovative.

THE PLAN

Mick & Em: Explain the project brief ( GGR )

Practical brief: the wall outside The Edge and also be in the main SLQ building. Made out of foam, cardboard and have lights. Limited colour pallete. To showcase the equipment that we have at The Edge.

Copy: needs to be appropriate for children, teens and adults and diverse community. Encapsulate Rumpus. A sense playful fun celebration. Welcoming feel.

Example copy: 'Let the wild rumpus start', 'Let the party begin',

Aesthetic: see Pinterest board and Talia's design.

GGR brings to life the imaginary worlds of children. Cross generational community collaboration to bring to life children imaginary landscape. Cross disciplinary- activation activities of movement, projection and soundscape, costume and storytelling (narrative)

Mick & Em: show examples of signs that have been made at the edge and sign possibilities.

6.15pm: Talia: Share her design for the Great and Grand Rumpus sign

Talia: Intro to Typography and relevant terms

6.30pm Break off into groups.

- Em & Mick: Share some tag line examples break off into typography and copy groups. Then swap.

- Talia: lead the group through using the print outs of styles and fonts. Solo playing with these.

7pm

Sharing back to the group. Choose one font and one tag line.

7.40pm Talia: Showing If we use existing fonts, show entering them in, but if they go for a hand lettered approach, talk through scanning it in and tracing by hand on computer approach.

Reflection

The group that attended had rather different personalities and interests. It took a while to get busy hands and ideas.

The main ideas that emerged where:

A call to action tag line of:

Join the…… Adventure, Fun, Wonder, excitement, crazy, stampede… with a pianola like turning cog that allows punters to turn it to land on a word.

Some kind of composition to make it look nice and to have 'The Great and Grand Rumpus' as one line down the bottom with hashtags #made@theedge #greatgrandrumpus

If we had more time and resources we would pick up and run with the idea of pianola type roll/barrel that could be interacted with to change the words (fun, excitement etc)

if we were to do this series again it would be great to begin with lettering first and to explore techniques and what the lettering conveys. Mick's suggestion is to offer as a series before beginning a sign design and making process. If I was to just do the design session again I would start with playfully exploring brushstrokes to begin with and then incorporate the brief and then come up with a tagline.

Prep

Before the session do the following:

- Work on the layout for cutting

- Cut and trial the paint

(offer a working bee session/s outside of these formal sessions for anyone that would like to join in the cutting and painting)

Actual

The sign making process extended out to more working bee drop in sessions after this one.

The background texture (corrugated cardboard hexagon shapes) ended up taking a lot longer than one might have thought. There was a corrugated pattern that was established and many hexagons to cut.

Install

The sign ended up being installed in the Main State Library Infozone area instead of where the sign was initially designed for (outside The Edge). The Sign still worked in this area due to its size and workmanship. A risk assessment was done for the new install area and we had a group installed. See photos below.
