Title
Candy town lollipop trees

Design Vision

Is there a special function for this design?

Background

Concept - Alexia 6 yrs old fashion designer from candy town

Model – Iris 4 yrs old

Story line:

…A make up artist at the Gabba was making the world’s largest Blue berry pancake, unfortunately a fashion designer from candy town was hunting for troll fairies, fortunately the Gods from New York were flossing and they inspired everyone to floss, even the troll fairies

Alexias story went on to more detail about the fashion designer having a magical needle in her handbag to fight evil.

Iris’s story is about the lollipop trees having special powers – if you eat them you get wings to fly.

Function:

Feature Design challenge:

• Create a lollipop tree that places the giant handbag in Candyland.

Considerations:

• To add to the magic of Candyland where the fashion designers handbag and needle hangs out add some magical giant lollipop trees, as made by Iris.

• These are freestanding trees at kid height to Candytown look like it’s in a forest.

• Consider weights to keep them standing

Keywords for the design:

Lollipop, Fashion, Candy town, Handbag, transparent,

Location:

Free standing, location tba

Multiples:

Yes 6-8. Could even be helpful elsewhere…

Does this idea connect with another idea?

The concept comes from the troll fairy story but can exist in the space independently.

Does this idea require a linking design?

Is there a special function for this design?

Background

The meta narrative that has developed is that our girl hero (to be named) is really strong and has turned the library upside down, revealing many of the unheard stories in her collection.
Visitors are asked to experience the stories and contribute their own by making a character and story of their own. This will help Girl Hero turn up the right way and keep sharing stories elsewhere.
Story line:
Marianna is writing the Meta Narrative and the stories that go with each artifact we have made. They will have little tags on them as if from a collection.
Function:
Feature at group activity

Design challenge:

• Create a Girl Hero (to be named) which is a combination of Pria’s lady beetle drawing and Ethan’s Snake with lightning tail.

• This character has: Lady beetle body for buzzing around, eagle feet for holding things, long snakey arms to get into small spots, Ears which are either mouse ears or fox ears for sensing good stories, (whichever models best) and a lightning bolt tail for protection and detecting shiny things.

Considerations:

• This character will exist at the art activity in the Auditorium and perhaps at the art activity in the knowledge walk.

• There will be a display of peoples stories/art in the auditorium (separate brief) that the character should relate to.

• Consider making the story garden and the hero relate/move together.

• Is the hero upside down? Or on a trapeze where it can spin around – upside down to the right way around when a story is added to the display? Or connected to the story

garden in a way where they make each other move? – The more stories added, the more hero turns things back the right way.

Keywords for the design:

Is there a special function for this design?

Background

There will be a main art activity in the auditorium to accompany the meta narrative and the sculpture of the ‘girl hero’ (to be named)

Story line:

‘Girl Hero’ is a very strong little girl, she has the power to turn things upside down to see things from a different angle. She has turned the library upside down and revealed a collection of unheard stories. Help her turn the right way up by adding your own story to her collection, so that she can keep on sharing stories.

Function:

Display that goes with the hero at main interactive art activity.

Design challenge:

• Create a simple and unique display for people to leave their toilet roll art/stories behind to help the hero make her collection even bigger. This will sit in front of the first big auditorium window with the Edge signage so people can see it from the outside.
Considerations:

• Consider making the story garden and the hero relate/move together.

• Is the hero upside down? Or on a trapeze where it can spin around – upside down to upside down again when a story is added to the display? Or connected to the story garden in a way where they make each other move? – The more stories added, the more hero turns things back the right way.

• Consider how to make the character so it faces towards the auditorium door

Keywords for the design:

Location:

Does this idea connect with another idea?

Yes The hero is the collector of all the stories that exist in the Rumpus.
The story garden displays craft and stories made by people in the knowledge walk and at the Rumpus.
By making new stories people help ‘the hero’ do a flip to get her closer to being able to continue sharing her stories.

Design Vision

Is there a special function for this design?

Concept – A conversation with the group about ‘the world turns’ the sculpture of the elephant and the water rat just outside of the library.
Many kids took up the idea of the world turning upside down and what we would see. Block play has been a big part of it.

Story line:

If the State Library was turned upside down what would happen? This is the story line that has become the meta narrative that will frame the Rumpus Project.

Function:

Feature/entry

Design challenge:

• Create a framing archway around the front door made from oversized bricks that have fallen about when the world turned upside down.

• Inside the archway/tunnel make plans for a mirror or screen where people see themselves upside down as they walk through.

Considerations:

• The bricks shouldn’t look like there has been a disaster at the edge, but like they have formed a wonderful grotto or cave to form the entrance to the Rumpus.

• Can the cave/tunnel be wide enough for wheelchairs and just taller than tall people in parts to create an unusual and intimate entry experience.

• There will be restrictions as to how much installation can be on the walkway Make two parts to this on either side of the existing sliding glass doors to create a tunnel where people see themselves upside down in a mirror or on a screen.

• One brick may have the word welcome on it (upside down?)

Keywords for the design:

Entry, signpost, upside down experience, mystery.

Location:

Does this idea connect with another idea?

This idea ties all of the other ideas together, indicating something mysterious might have happened at the edge.
It should also tie in with ‘The Great and Grand Sign’ on the opposite wall, in a subtle way.

Theming:

Tech link up – camera and screen to turn people upside down.

IDEAS BRIEF 1: Wiggly Tooth Shark

IDEA INFO

Design vision, is there a special function for this design?

This idea is an ideal entry/doorway. I don't see it as the front
door, (at the moment) but as an entry to 'the underwater dance
party' idea.

The idea comes about after an interaction between Tim and
Elizabeth (5yrs). The first thing Elizabeth wanted to tell Tim about
was her wiggly tooth and that it was like a 'trapdoor'. Tim and
Elizabeth played with the idea of what would be behind the
trapdoor. When I asked some other young people to draw a
giant mouth some drew what looked like a sharks mouth. The
idea that a 5yr old shark with a wiggly tooth has a dance party
in its belly came about when I linked it to another drawing done
that day.

I have chosen this concept because loosing teeth is a classic
symbol of being a kid.

Does this idea connect with another idea?

This idea connects with 'the underwater dance party'

Does the idea require a linking design?

Yes. I see a walkway or tunnel that represents the digestive
track of the shark. This will link the mouth to the stomach where
the underwater dance party happens.

VISION

Colour requirements:

This giant shark mouth would look good in the raw colours,
with white teeth. The inside of the mouth would be great in the
red. I can see red tinsel party curtains that you walk through
forming the inside of the mouth and the digestive track. See
drawing for other colour suggestions.

IDEA INFO

Design vision, is there a special function for this design?

A dance party viewed from the river.

This idea comes from a drawing done by Amelie Rose Bull
(about 5 yrs old). She worked with Mari on her idea of the best
party in the world and came up with the underwater dance
party where little down fish and other sea creatures go to
dance. The jellyfish light up the ocean by glowing in different
colours …

I suggest we make the clown fish and the jelly fish in multiples
of varying sizes. They will be hanging in a contained space that
creates the sharks belly where the underwater dance party
happens.

I have also flagged linking ideas from Neson re silent disco
headphones and Eddie, Frank, Mitch, Jacob and crew re
Flossing.

Does this idea connect with another idea?

Yes - The wiggly tooth door- (sharks mouth)

Does the idea require a linking design?

Yes a digestive tract

VISION

Colour requirements:

The important colours in this design is the multi-coloured
jellyfish that create a fantasy underwater world as in Amelia's
drawing and described by her to Mari. We can achieve this by
using reflective materials for the jelly fish tentacles, along with
lighting. The down fish will work as raw colours or raw and one
other colour.

Is there a special function for this design?

Story - Luciella 10 yrs old contributed this character to a group story game

Story line:

…Red ants from pluto are whispering sweet nothings, unfortunately snot blurping monsters from the animal forest on Mars were hopping on ice making too much noise and no one could hear the ants. Flying apple (men) from the darkness death tribe came to the rescue with jumping pillows that killed the noise and saved the red ants sweet nothings …

Function:

Costume – Flying apple – super hero costume

Design challenge:
Create a flying apple super hero costume. (This may use elements that use the same base as the red ants from pluto costume but with it’s own features.)

Keywords for the design:

Apple, heros, good, lights, reflections, dancing,

Considerations:

• Subject to approval the apple hero costume will be worn while swinging on swing sets under the dazzling swinging moon, or while carrying out another activity like flying in front of a giant fan/wind tunnel, so they need to be easy to get on and off. Consider designing this costume/headwear as one piece. (ie cape joined to apple head)

• The capes should be nice and flowing to give the illusion of flying, while on a swing or in front of a fan.

• Multiples of this will be required.

Create a red ant costume/ headwear to be worn in whispering booth and possibly roving. You can only whisper when you are a red ant. You whisper into a microphone that is connected to a speaker that blasts the sound into the river (not really but it could look like it does) or the whispers could go to somewhere else in the installation.

Is there a special function for this design?

Background

Story - Summer 5yrs old. A conversation with Mari.

Story line:

…’I love swings. I love to swing really high. How high? High up into the sky, up to the moon! What happens when you get there? A big moon dancing party ‘…

Function:

Furniture / Feature

Design challenge:

Create a giant dazzling moon that swings from the ceiling in the auditorium.

Keywords for the design:

Moon, craters, cheese, dazzling, lights, reflections, dancing,

Considerations:

• The moon could swing in the space. How could that be achieved? Is it powered by humans or is there a way to keep it swinging?

• There will be a weight that this artefact can't exceed because it’s being hung.

Location:

• swinging from a central point in the auditorium, just above head height.

Does this idea connect with another idea?

Yes

Whispering red ants from Pluto

Snot blurping monster

Does this idea require a linking design?

Yes No

Theming:

Hanging and movement devices

Lead up workshop activity:

Lighting the dazzling moon (making it swing if that hasn’t been solved)

Is there a special function for this design?

1 Rule of Rumpus: Zylah 7 yrs old

Important button that controls everything: Lucas 4 yrs

Story line:

…A make up artist at the Gabba was making the world’s largest Blueberry pancake, unfortunately a fashion designer from Candytown was hunting for troll fairies, fortunately the Gods from New York were flossing and they inspired everyone to floss, even the troll fairies

The one rule of Rumpus ‘You must play at all times’ (see video)

Lucas refers to a very special button in his drawing (see video)

Function:

Greeting Character / signpost

Design challenge:

• Create a Troll Fairy character with big interesting hair, kind of scary, but cute, with a feature button to be pressed for sound.

• The Troll Fairy greets visitors with the 1 rule of Rumpus when you press the button, which is a blueberry on chest or belly button, at kid height.

Keywords for the design:

Troll, cheeky, big hair, greeting,

Considerations:

• The troll is kid height but with big hair so they can reach the button, but has a presence that immediately attracts people.
• Troll could also have a flag that has the rule on it, as per Zylah's drawing and Nina's video.

•One only required I think

Design Vision:

Is there a special function for this design?

Background Concept:

Jack and Marianna

Story line:

When the world turns upside down you see the cats in catarmarans from the Brisbane River, in The Edge

Function:

Interactive feature / Obstacle course / pathway

Design challenge:

* We already have a cat

• Create two boat shaped steps and a simple mast with a sail or flag, that is easy for kids to step up onto and pretend they are sailing with a cat.

Considerations:

• Develop the boat shapes to take the weight of a kid

• Develop the size of the boat so that it’s not too big and the cat looks like an oversized passenger.

This concept is part of developing a simple obstacle course/ pathway in the centre of the auditorium

Alexias story went on to more detail about the fashion designer having a magical needle in her handbag to fight evil.

Interactive feature Design challenge:

• Create a giant handbag or hat that kids can enter into.

Considerations:

• In Alexias model of her fashion designer she has used cellophane to make a beautiful long cloak. Is it possible to achieve this see through effect with the sculpture? Or if it’s made from cardboard could we have many holes in the card so that kids can sew on bits of transparent colourful material with big blunt needles.

• There have also been lots of references to and models made of lollipops and sweets – Is there potential to add this to the interaction?

Is there a special function for this design?

Background

Story - This idea comes about because of a general interest in stories about the planets. Jack tells a story about bouncing to the moon and spinning with Saturn in the movie called Jack Moon.

Story line:

‘If the world got turned upside down we go into the solar system.’

Function:

Design element to connect the star making bull frog stage and the moon

Design challenge:

• Create a projection for the back wall behind the stage featuring planets and stars that reinforces the narrative of the world turning upside down.

Keywords for the design:

Solar system, moving, upside down, spinning, Saturn,

Considerations:

• This can be abstract or illustrative

• Could be very subtle, predominantly black, so as not to detract from the other projections in the room, with the odd planet

floating up the wall.

Location:

• Auditorium stage

Does this idea connect with another idea?

Yes

The Moon

Star Making Bullfrog Stage

Holiday workshop activity:

I think this might be a workshop task or something done by kids in the last session.“

Is there a special function for this design?

Character name and drawing:

Leo 6 yrs old

Whispering into speakers concept:

Neson 8 yrs old

They eat maltesers to make their nothings sweet and they whisper into microphones connected to speakers.

Function:

Furniture/screen

Design challenge:

Create a booth by making a screen for the back of Bay 7 that gives the impression of being on pluto from inside and out.

Keywords for the design:

Pluto, whispering booth, private, but still visable

Considerations:

• The purpose of the screen is to create a space where you become a red ant on pluto and you only whisper. There may be mics that send the whispers into the robots brain.

• Visitors can look through the holes in the screen to observe the whispering ants

*Team brainstorming required – how?

Location:
• Bay 7 at present

Does this idea connect with another idea?

Yes

Whispering ants from Pluto

Theming:

Title
Candy town lollipop trees

Design Vision

Is there a special function for this design?

Background

Concept - Alexia 6 yrs old fashion designer from candy town

Model – Iris 4 yrs old

Story line:

…A make up artist at the Gabba was making the world’s largest Blueberry pancake, unfortunately a fashion designer from candy town was hunting for troll fairies, fortunately the Gods from New York were flossing and they inspired everyone to floss, even the troll fairies

Alexia's story went on to more detail about the fashion designer having a magical needle in her handbag to fight evil.

• These are freestanding trees at kid height to make Candytown look like it’s in a forest.

• Consider weights to keep them standing

Keywords for the design:

Lollipop, Fashion, Candy town, Handbag, transparent,

Location:

Free standing, location tba

Multiples:

Yes 6-8. Could even be helpful elsewhere…

Does this idea connect with another idea?

The concept comes from the troll fairy story but can exist in the space independently.

Does this idea require a linking design?

Yes No

Theming:

Yes - Fashion designer from New York Handbag

Design Vision

Is there a special function for this design?

Story line:
Marianna is writing the Meta Narrative and the stories that go with each artefact we have made.

Activity entry, signpost, upside down experience, mystery, contribution effect.

Location:

Does this idea connect with another idea?

Does this idea require a linking design?

Display, interactive activity, contributing a story causes something to happen.

Location:

Auditorium

Does this idea connect with another idea?

Yes The hero is the collector of all the stories that exist in the Rumpus.
The story garden displays craft and stories made by people in the knowledge walk and at the Rumpus.
By making new stories people help ‘the hero’ do a flip to get her closer to being able to continue sharing her stories.

Does this idea require a linking design?

• There will be restrictions as to how much installation can be on the walkway. Make two parts to this on either side of the existing sliding glass doors to create a tunnel where people see themselves upside down in a mirror or on a screen.

• One brick may have the word welcome on it (upside down?)

Keywords for the design:

Entry, signpost, upside down experience, mystery.

Does this idea connect with another idea?

This idea ties all of the other ideas together, indicating something mysterious might have happened at the edge.
It should also tie in with ‘The Great and Grand Sign’ on the opposite wall, in a subtle way.

Is there a special function for this design?

Story – This is Ethan’s, 7 yrs old, response to Sue’s challenge to design a cool arrow that will help people get from the knowledge walk to The Edge.

Story line:

… arrows journaling by Ethan

Function:

Feature/sign

Design challenge:

• Choose one or some of Ethan’s arrows to make into a free standing 3D feature, for placement between the Knowledge Walk and the Edge to help people realize something ‘wonderful’ is going on at The Edge.

Considerations:

• Check with GGR team for all requirements around this.

• Allow for secondary signage on the arrow that says – ‘The Great and Grand Rumpus’ plus details. Is that hand written on blackboard or formally printed and attached?

• Plan for outdoor and moving inside at night requirements.

Keywords for the design:

Function:

Interactive feature /illusion

Design challenge:

• Create wall that wraps around the permanent sound desk in the auditorium.

• On the wall create a backdrop which is a sky

• In front of the wall create a set that consists of :

-	a giant tree on its side with a bee hive

-	connected to a branch is a rope

-	the tree has a ramp that can be walked on behind it, so that when you hold on to the rope and walk up it gives the illusion you are climbing up the tree on the rope.

-	At one end there will be two dude guide dog outfits that you can wear when creating the illusion.

-	In front of the tree will be a cross or station where people stand with their phone to film the users of the set.

Considerations:

• When you film people using the set and you turn your phone sideways it looks like they are climbing a big tree to get honey.

• The backdrop will need to be high enough so that an adult can stand up and still be in front of sky

Story line:

…’Um’ is a girl. Has a blanket and a pillow. A duck. Likes to sleep a lot and collects dreams. Monster dreams. She eats them up and they taste yummy. She doesn’t like getting up. One day Um woke up and ran down to the pavement where the turtles were playing and cooked all the monster dreams on a BBQ and had a huge monster dream feast. Yumm!

Furniture/interactive element

Design challenge:

• Create an oversized BBQ (Weber style?) where people can use paint pens or sharpies to draw or write about their bad/monster dreams, as a way of leaving them behind. Or coloured paper and glue?

Considerations:

• Create something that is table height with quite a bit of surface area and strong enough to be drawn on.

• Also determine exactly how the interaction works.

Considerations:

• Stay true to the naivety of the drawings and create something abstract and dreamlike.

• There should be enough room somewhere in the monster dreams entry for people to enter the space behind.

Character/interactive

Design challenge:

Create a robot’s head that is enterable. It’s like walking into little room that’s another world. Inside you hear the whispers that come from the whispering booth, and perhaps you see the performances for the stars on the bullfrog stage on screen and whatever else lines the walls of a robot brain.

Considerations:

• This idea could be custom made for a space in The Edge.

The hallway to the toilets and the space outside innovation lab doors.

Or the area in front of the sound desk

Title and facilitator/s: Sue Loveday, Mari Hirata, Marianna Shek

Attendants and ages: Morning session - 12. Afternoon session - 13

Aim of Workshop: Come up with a storyworld that ties together the Great and Grand Rumpus design and storylines

Inspiring quotes from young people: ‘The Fashion Designer fights off the trolls with her needle of justice that she keeps in her handbag.’

‘Red Ants need to eat lots of Maltesers to shout sweet nothings.’
‘How can you shout out sweet nothings?’(Mari)
‘Speakers’ (Nessun)
‘This is so much fun’ (Mitch)

Stand out ideas or outcomes:

1st workshop:

Red ants from Pluto were shouting sweet nothings.

Unfortunately, SNOT-BLURPING MONSTERS from the animal forest were hopping on ice, making too much noise.

Fortunately, Flying Applemen of the Darkness Death tribe came to the rescue with jumping pillows that killed all the noise and saved the day

2nd workshop:

There was a make-up artist at the Gabba making the world’s largest berry pancake.

Unfortunately, a fashion designer from Candytown was hunting for troll fairies (who eat pancakes).

Fortunately the Gods from New York were in town and they were FLOSSING, and they inspired everyone to FLASH FLOSS, even the troll fairies.

Things to consider next workshop:

Are there any links between the ideas?

If we want to move an idea forward, prompt the kids to develop/ flesh out ideas

Specific outcomes required in the next workshop:

Marianna needs to lead team to come up with the rules of the Storyworld and the call to action to encourage people to play

Are there completed media release forms? No

Are there completed feedback forms? No

What was challenging and how was this handled?

Recruiting the kids. Parents who had signed up didn’t all show up. Mari had to go down to the Corner and recruit people.

To run this exact workshop again, how would I do it differently?

Can we consider marketing to schools (old fashioned way)

Better booking management (the event was locked off on Eventbrite. It closed down early and parents couldn’t register).

Overall, we were very happy with the way this workshop is run. The balance between structured ideas generation and self-directed play is excellent for engaging the children in imaginative world building.

•	Group story game led by Marianna
•	The starting point of the sculpture outside the library was chosen to start a story game where kids contributed what happens next in the story.

'Imagine the Rumpus' Workshop 2 REFLECTIONS

Title and facilitator/s: Sue Loveday, Mari Hirata, Marianna Shek, Tim Mullooly

Attendants and ages: Morning session - 9 (incl adults). Afternoon session - 5 (incl adults)

Aim of Workshop: Come up with various stories involving Kuril the water rat trying to get a golden pear from the top of the bodhi tree

Inspiring quotes from young people:

First workshop
‘The elephant sucked up all the water and spit it out from its nose. Max’s $2 got stuck up the elephant’s nostril but we got the world back.’

Second workshop
Not a quote but some positive feedback: One parent skipped their next activity because their child was having so much fun (dancing)

Stand out ideas or outcomes:

1st workshop:
•	Shark herder riding the shark.
•	There is an emergency button on the sharks back. Press it and it ‘controls the world’

2nd workshop:

•	Planets and universes
•	Where did the world come from?
•	Star making bull frog: the bull frog sucked up the water from the Brisbane river, floated up to space, then sprayed it all over space as stars
•	The water rat loved cheese and ate the moon (which was made from cheese)

Things to consider next workshop:

•	Go back to the hat game, to generate more broad ideas
•	Then in week 4, return to the ‘Then what happened’ game using another story scenario for deeper levels of story development from the hat game.
•	When discussing the narrative development we will need to Consider appropriation of the name ‘Kuril’. Is it possible to feature a water rat with a different name?

Specific outcomes required in the next workshop: Ideas for the upside down world

Are there completed media release forms?: No

Are there completed feedback forms?: No

What was challenging and how was this handled?

•	In the ‘Then what happened’ group storybuilding game, it’s easier for introverted children to miss the chance to present their ideas if they are shouted down by the more gregarious kids. This is different than the ‘choose from the hat’ game, where we could take a more orderly approach.

•	However, when we went around individually to work with the kids, we made sure to listen to their stories and assured them they could vary the story as much as they like from the group work. Sue also went around recording all of their stories so that the introverted kids felt that their contributions were properly acknowledged.

To run this exact workshop again, how would I do it differently?
•	We were pretty happy with the way the workshop ran.

Title and facilitator

Sue Loveday, Mari Hirata, Marianna Shek, Tim Mullooly

Attendants and ages:

Morning session - 11 (incl adults)
(We did not have any participants for the second workshop but we used our time productively by engaging with the children at the Corner and also by having a much needed team meeting to discuss production strategies)

Aim of Workshop:

Generate new concepts for story ideas to fill the stations inside the Rumpus. Use the hat game
Develop the concepts through drawing, model making and building/ playing with blue blocks

Inspiring quotes from young people:

First workshop
‘Hey dude, what’s up?’
‘Maaaaaan, I’m sticky’
‘Don’t worry dude, it’s just sweet.’
‘Lets bounce’

Stand out ideas or outcomes:

1st workshop:

A lifeguard came out of the closet and started ninja-ing. Unfortunately, a guide dog trainer from a whale’s stomach was making honey and making a sticky mess. It was hard to do any ninja-ing.
Fortunately, the Dude from the cubbyhouse was bouncing along and said, ‘It’s alright, everything is sweet as.’ And they ate all the honey together.

Tim and Arabella made a pair of sunglasses and role played the Dudes.

Sue asked the kids what would happen if the world turned upside down and Tim and Marley mimed climbing up a rope and falling off the wall. (Tim raised the idea of turning this play into an interaction at the Edge)

Sebastian and Floyd made complicated towers and practised their ninja kicks

Things to consider next workshop:

We are now generating some fantastic ideas and need to work on developing interactions and tying threads together.

In week 4, we will return to the ‘Then what happened’ game using another story scenario for deeper levels of story engagement.

Specific outcomes required in the next workshop:

We would like to start visualising/ conceptualising the form of ‘Janet our placeholder’ the custodian of the Unheard Stories.

Are there completed media release forms?

No

Are there completed feedback forms?
No

What was challenging and how was this handled?

This group had excellent chemistry and played very well together.
At one point, a younger sibling of one of the participants didn’t want to do the activity and was making loud, disruptive noises a that were disturbing some of the other kids. The parent was excellent at diverting his attention and getting him to participate in block building. Sue was able to feed this back into the exercise which was to develop the collaborative story idea through drawing and plasticine modelling.

To run this exact workshop again, how would I do it differently?

We were pretty happy with the way the workshop ran.

Sue will draw the things the artists collect on the board.

Then the things the group collects

Then the things the animal pics might collect

Then Sue draws a big nest around our collection

Lets draw the creature that might have collected all of these things

It could be a collection of creatures

Sue draws Owl head with big eyes for looking, Platypus body and strong tail for turning things over, mouse legs for running around fast, crab nippers for picking things up.

You draw your own

Continue the drawing into crafting a model

Introduce the idea of building a world with the blue blocks that extends play beyond the craft.

How can the craft interact with the space created by the blocks?

Other things needed today:

Arrow drawings, draw something tall, buildings flowers, tree, sauce bottle

11.20

Sue starts to document the ideas that have come about.

Other artists ask the participants to reflect on what they have made and inform the documentation.

Morning session - 7 (incl adults)
(We did not have any participants for the second workshop but we used our time productively by having a team meeting, discussing the individual briefs and identifying the gaps)

Aim of workshop
Generate ideas for Janet the Placeholder.
Develop concepts for the collector - what do you collect? Why? what tools do you need to collect?

Inspiring quotes from young people
First workshop.
‘One day, Um woke up and ran down to the pavement where the turtles were playing, and cooked all the monster dreams on a BBQ and had a huge monster dreams feast! Yummm!’

Stand out ideas or outcomes
1st workshop:

Ethan came up with ‘Jimbo’, a creature with a kangaroo body with a pouch to hold its collection, and three heads - a fox, a snake and a worm. Jimbo loves to read ‘Who wins’ books.

Pria came up with a ladybird and her friend Stephanie. They live in a tree. The branches are curly and the ladybirds use this to hang their collection. They collect earrings, bracelets and bows.

Oscar came up with Bun the big duck creature with a big beak. She collects things with her long legs and puts them in her beak and it slides everything down its beak. Once she’s in the burrow, she regurgitates everything and decorates the burrow. She loves pancakes.

Um is a duck girl who likes to sleep. She doesn’t have eyes because she’s always asleep. She has a big beak. Because she sleeps a lot, she always dreams. She dreams about monsters. Um eats the dreams up and they’re very yummy.

One day Um wakes up, runs down to the pavement where the turtles are playing. The turtles hate going outside because they are frightened of monsters. Um coughs up all her monster dreams, cooks it up on a BBQ and they all have a feast.

Umman is a duck-girl with a long slender beak who can only pick up long slender things. There are fire trucks with long ladders, airplanes and police cars and ambulance. She doesn’t like to sleep at all. She also regurgitates things and puts it under her pillow in her burrow.

Thing to consider for next workshop
That concludes our workshop series. We are now working backwards to flesh out existing ideas.

Specific outcomes required in the next workshop:
NA

Are there completed media release forms
Yes

Are there completed feedback forms
No

What was challenging and how was this handled?
This was a great group. The kids understood the task immediately and were pretty happy to run with their ideas. Oscar worked really well with Mari and came up with some fantastic ideas. Tim engaged Pria’s extroverted personality with singing performances.

To run this exact workshop again, how would I do it differently?
We were pretty happy with the way the workshop ran.

Inspiring quotes from young people:

First workshop.

‘One day, Um woke up and ran down to the pavement where the turtles were playing, and cooked all the monster dreams on a BBQ and had a huge monster dreams feast! Yummm!’

Stand out ideas or outcomes:

1st workshop:

Ethan came up with ‘Jimbo’, a creature with a kangaroo body with a pouch to hold it collection, and three heads - a fox, a snake and a worm. Jimbo loves to read ‘Who wins’ books.

Pria came up with a ladybird and her friend Stephanie. They live in a tree. The branches are curly and the ladybirds use this to hang their collection. They collect earrings, bracelets and bows.

Oscar came up with Bun the big duck creature with big beak. She collects things with her long legs and puts in her beak and it slides everything done its beak.

Umman is a duck-girl with a long slender beak who can only pick up long slender things are fire trucks with long ladders, airplanes and police cars and ambulance. She doesn’t like to sleep at all. She also regurgitates things and puts it under her pillow in her burrow.

Things to consider next workshop:

That concludes our workshop series. We are now working backwards to flesh out existing ideas.

Are there completed media release forms?

Yes

What was challenging and how was this handled?

This was a great group. The kids understood the task immediately and was pretty happy to run with their ideas. Oscar worked really well with Mari and came up with some fantastic ideas. Tim engaged Pria’s extroverted personality with singing performances.

To run this exact workshop again, how would I do it differently?

We were pretty happy with the way the workshop ran.
