About the Workshops

With support funding from the Siganto Foundation in 2017 for a 5-year period, the Siganto Digital Literacy Workshop (SDLW) program aims to equip recently arrived communities with a personal computer, and the skills needed to use and maintain these.

The SDLWs are run using donated desktop computers. The hard drives have been wiped, with all data removed, but the computers are fully functional.

Because each brand and model of computer requires different methods and tools to take apart, we focus on the main components of all personal computers to provide a basic understanding of how they operate.

The best way to learn to troubleshoot and solve problems is by fixing unexpected failures, so expect to break your computer, over and over again. Also you can expect some sabotage by your facilitators. You will spend two to three hours in each workshop, with four workshops in total.

When you finish the workshops (and your computer is working) you can take it home! We have a 100% success rate with all of our participants taking home a working, useful computer ¹⁾.

Workshop Outlines

The SDLW series can be run as individual workshops, or in a two day intensive. Workshops one and two will take up a whole day. You can use workshop three as homework, or complete workshops three, four and five on day two. There is also a resources section outlining how to upgrade your computer.

Language Translations

Thanks to the support of the Siganto Foundation, we have translated the main workshop session (#1) into 3 languages other than English, these are Somali, Tigrinya and Arabic. Due to the lack of equivalent terminology available in Tigrinya and Somali, since most of the translation would still use English wording, the other 3 workshops have just been translated to Arabic where possible.

Glossary

This glossary has terms we have defined ourselves or modified from Wikipedia.

Case or chassis in an average desktop computer is just a strong metal box, with ports for input and ouput (IO) to connect all your peripherals like a mouse, keyboards, monitors, speakers, headphones and microphones. The case has a power inlet, and switches for power-on and reset.

In fact too comply with the terms of various FOSS licenses , almost all the software on your SDLW computer has to be made available. A convenient way to do this for an Operating System is in an online software “warehouse” called a repository or repo for short.

To find the source of any software inside a repo, I type a simple command into the terminal, my computer consults a list of possible source repos and if it can find it, downloads and installs the software, and I have the option to download the source code as well.

If I make a change to the program's source code and re-distribute it, I am then obliged make those changes available as well.

Welcome to The Siganto Digital Learning Workshops

Background

Developed by The Edge, State Library of Queensland, the Siganto Digital Learning Workshops is an initiative that aims to equip migrant and new arrival communities with a personal computer, and the skills needed to use and maintain it. We do this by acquiring previously owned computers, putting them into the hands of those who need them and teaching participants how to dismantle, rebuild, and troubleshoot their machines, before using open-source software to create their own digital projects. Best of all, at the end of the program, our participants keep the computers they have been working on.

Welcome

The Siganto Digital Learning Workshops (SDLW) are a series of workshops where participants get hands-on experience with taking apart, breaking and fixing a computer, then build your own custom-built computer operating system using free software you have chosen and installed yourself.

At the end of the series not only will you have the skills and knowledge to repair and upgrade everything inside your computer, you get to take the computer home. It's yours to keep!

SDLW assumes no prior knowledge of computer hardware, and begins with the basics of computer software using clear, simple language.

This program was developed State Library of Queensland (SLQ) in Australia. All original material is released under a Creative Commons share-alike non-commercial license.

About this wiki

This wiki is your complete resource for the SDLW workshop program. It contains the workshop guidelines and other resources to help you complete the SDLW program.

We've tried to define all jargon and acronyms either in the text or with links to Simple Wikipedia. Simple Wikipedia is a smaller, less technical version of the main wikipedia site.

However, if anything is still confusing to you we have not done our job properly so do ask your facilitator to clarify and we'll do our best to amend the content.

Getting around the wiki

On the top left of the screen is a sidebar menu. You can find the main pages of the wiki here.

On the top right is a table of contents which shows the sections of each page. This can be closed to save space.

On the bottom right of each page is a button which returns you to the top of the page.

Exporting Content

From the 'page tools' menu on the right hand side you can use the 'Export to PDF' button to create a .pdf document of the current page, which is then ready to print or save.

To create a document you can use in Microsoft Word, try the 'ODT Export' button.
