Cardboard Kaiju Session 2

During this session Albert Park Flexi School will play test the cardboard kaiju game. the Men's Shed will continue to make the cardboard city as well as design a a 3D sign for a billboard

The Plan: 22nd November

- Meet Albert Park group in the foyer and give them a run down of the plan to play test the game in the auditorium space.

- Men's Shed down in the Fab Lab hot-gluing the buildings together

- Any Men's Shed guys who are interested in using their laser cutter and design skills can design and cut out a 3D sign for the billboard building

Have already constructed buildings near the cutouts that need to be constructed as a reference point

Reflection

There were 10 community people in the space for this session. Lots of hands on deck! The Men's Shed guys got into a real flow of constructing the buildings and stayed from 10-2pm! An extra 2 hours! One of the guys worked on the computer to design a billboard (coffee shop) as well.

The Cardboard Kaiju game has influences from U-G-O by Michael Daniel, based on Yu-Gi-Oh, the collectible card game. See the rules here.

During the game prototyping and play testing session we ran into many obstacles, mainly derived from differences in opinions and preferences in regards to enjoyable, simple game play. To overcome these kind of time-sinks its important to, as a facilitator, make a decision as to what to go with and push for testing of it, acknowledging that if the idea doesn't work you will revisit the other options. It was essential to take notes, confirming what was written down and moving on. Breaking down the game in Player, Kaiju, Board/City was very helpful and breaking it down even more would be even better.

It's OK to come to the session with several ideas or models, as long as there is a genuine decision making process behind each of them.

Developing a game is an iterative process and requires much play testing, with outsiders not only the developers or the same group of people. Therefore it is more important to test and tweak, rinse and repeat and not solve every problem before your first test. Have someone write down the different solutions to each problem and highlight the one you are going to be testing. Keep notes during the play tests and review them afterwards, discussing fixes, tweaks or gameplay changes. The list should be shorter the more you test but there is no hard rule, something you won't notice until playing a few times. Besides, a game is never truly finished, there is always more to add or tweak.

Many ideas might seem good to start with but there is no way to know until it is actually tested properly, no matter your experience. Successful game studios make dozens of prototypes before settling for one that will be chosen for production, so don't be afraid to start over if it doesn't make sense. Don't force it. We had a backup game just in case this wouldn't work.

WARNING - This workshop makes use of small coin cell/ button batteries.

In December 2020, the Australian Government made mandatory safety and information standards for button/coin batteries and consumer goods that contain button/coin batteries (the standards). The standards included an 18 month transition period and became mandatory from 22 June 2022. From 22 June 2022 manufacturers, importers, wholesalers and retailers of button/coin batteries or consumer goods that contain button/coin batteries supplied to Australia, must comply with the applicable Australian mandatory safety and information standards. Supplying or selling non-compliant products to consumers in Australia is illegal. The four mandatory standards are as follows:

Teens from the Deception Bay Flexi School and teens attending the book club series at the library will be learning to use Tinkercad and 3D printing skills.

They will then design a small 3D printed character and a make a diorama for them to live in.

The following is the plan for the running this workshop:

- Introductions (introduce yourself, and any questions first up)

- Show an example of what we will be making

- Break off into pairs to design a miniature character (are the 2 characters friends? related, strangers?)

- Now take these character ideas and design them in Tinkercad on the computers

- 3D Print the characters

- Ask the group to think of an apocalyptic world that their characters could live in (out of space, a dark world, a stormy night, someone is leaving, on Mars, a discovery etc)

- Ask the group to share their world ideas as a way to decide on the final idea

- In their pairs they will now cut out the diorama template and add texture and elements to the diorama that capture the feel of the world they decided upon

- Add the characters to the diorama

- Write/ Tell (possibly make a sound recording of the participants describing the story) the story of your diorama.

Explain your diorama to the group (record these explanations so that you can use these potentially as the story that goes next to the work when displayed as a story in the young person's own voice)

Reflection: Deception Bay

The workshop today went well for the first time that it was run. There were also some learnings from the experience. The main ones being:

- Make sure your 3D printers are running and fully working before people use them. It is difficult when they are not your 3D printers that you are using. Good practice to personally check them.

The order that this workshop happens in is really important. It is important to think about the order in terms of what will keep them most engaged. Engaged in creating/making the world and characters.

After this test run all three of us (Mick. Leonie from Deception Bay and myself) agree that the best order for the workshop would be:

Session 3: 3D Design & Print

Have something being 3D printed in the space while everyone arrives. This way everyone sees the 3D printing in motion and if they do not have time to print their own designs they would have been able to see printing in motion.

1. Decide on a hero for you diorama (someone/something that is in the world)

We went over to the library computers to research and to find images that could be used as backdrop as well as the floor. We copied and then pasted the images into a Word Doc and sized them to fit in the diorama (10×12 for backdrop & 12×7.8 for floor). Then colour printed them

Cut out the colour prints and glue with glue sticks into the diorama

Attach led lights as well as the batteries

Possible Session Three - Mask your Face for the End of the World

Participants design a lace masquerade ball mask on paper with sharpies.

Photograph the design on paper with you smart phone and then import the image into Adobe Illustrator (or similar graphics software)

Size the image down to fit

'Trace' as a one colour logo

'Expand' as outlines..

Export as an .svg file

Import the svg file into Tinkercad as a 3-5mm high extrusion and scale to fit face. For smaller 3D printers halve the mask (to print just half at a time)

Export as an .stl file and print on the 3D printer

When printing is complete place mask on a plaster cast mould of a face and uniformly heat the plastic with a hot air gun until the plastic conforms to the topography of the mould

Allow to cool and try it on for fit

Paint and further embellishment can be added

Logistics of running mask workshop in Deception Bay

Possible to follow the above guidelines and then as well as having the 3D printers from the Deception Bay Library, we also have one from The Edge available to print masks. Both can be printing examples at the beginning; this way will open up a way to have conversations about 3D printers and the different options and capabilities of them. The group then designs their own masks by drawing in the template and uses inkscape and we print the masks after the session.

Rather than 3D print masks we decided to make it a little less reliant on technology working. Deception Bay 3D printers have not proved to be reliable along with The Edge only being able to offer to take one out and the main 3D printers at The Edge not having a wide enough print option for the masks. Soooo we decided to go with making cardboard full face masks.

Reflection

This session was a very successful and engaging session. It was great to start with a conversation around apocalypse and what they have seen recently- walking dead a game discussions came up. There were 10 young people and a couple of them were new faces. One of these young men seemed quite aloof and too cool to begin with. As soon as he began to make the mask and get his hands busy he was off and created a full mask with lights and all. The music really helped to engage him I noticed that he was singing away as he was using the hot glue gun.

I only used my iphone as the dbay library does not have a small speaker or sound system (something which they have discovered that they need after having had one for a book club session or 2 from a community member. They noticed that it made the teenagers relax and be more engaged in the library)

The group was focused and engaged. They particularly enjoyed using tinkercad and seeing the objects they were making from different perspectives. Not everyone was able to print their key rings. We will continue the printing and take them out next week.

Reflection

The plan had been to have up to 10 young people for this session. 3 turned up. Both The Edge and QPASTT were fine with this. This is the first engagement and this happens when young people have never been to a place before.

The group had a great time. They were a very focused group. You could tell that they all wanted to be there and had a genuine interest in learning about beat making. There was one track that was exported at the end of the session.

The group will be coming in tomorrow for an induction in the recording studio.

After working with the Men's Sheds over 5 weeks we have successfully transitioned a number of them into engaging further in their interests and coming in during open lab times to do two things:

3 x Sunny Bank men are coming in and doing the self paced CCC program on a Wednesday open lab and during hack the evening on a Thursday night.

Reflection

Today three men from the Sunnybank Men's Shed arrived early (9.30) and got stuck into using the hot glue and putting together the buildings. This remained the focus for this group. They tested the designs and saw some pitfalls in a couple of the tall buildings seeing that they need tabs to make it easier to glue. Hot glue guns are surprisingly hot and a thumb and a palm got burnt. The men became a little more careful after this.

The young people arrived and there were many new faces so I gave them a tour and then Phil lead a brainstorming session around the KAIJU. The group thought about Australian and Brisbane animals and looked at Phil's research into Kaijus. Organically the group also looked online to research iconic monsters as well as animals in Brisbane. Some of the participants were keen to draw and others more into brainstorming and researching. Ideas unfolded organically and there was one participant in particular that began to take ownership of the ideas by drawing them and asking for the groups feedback and voting for ideas to be added to what she was creating.

Brainstorming

The session was broken into three sections; brainstorming, individual idea generation and a discussion of the final Kaiju. We started off the session by clarifying what a Kaiju is, the origin and what defines it. We explained that we were designing our own “local” Kaiju, inspired by local fauna and also that the Kaiju was part of a physical game. With a whiteboard at hand we looked into what animals the group thought would be interesting to work with, would fit the project well or just be fun. Discussions were had, participants talked about movies they had seen or shared other relevant ideas or anecdotes about monsters and such. To maintain a flow of ideas we continually asked the group questions to encourage them to think of different aspects of the Kaiju, such as:

What's the natural habitat of the Kaiju? e.g does it comes from the Brisbane River, the reef or atop a mountain?
What's the Kaiju's intention? Why is it trying to destroy Brisbane?
Is it a carnivore or herbivore?
What's its name?

Individual Sketches

Once we had a bunch of ideas it was time for the participants to draw/sketch/doodle their own idea of the Kaiju. We suggested using several animals as inspiration and splitting up the Kaiju in Head, Body and Legs. this made it a easier for the participants to picture their creations because it allowed them to break down the problem. We gave the group a good 15-20 minutes to draw and discuss further. In the meantime we explained the principals of the Kaiju game we are designing and the overall narrative which was super exciting for a couple of participants who were into card games. This gave us the opportunity to invite them for some play testing, giving them the opportunity to give their input and feedback about the game.

Kaiju round-table presentations

It was time to present everyone's ideas. The Kaijus were varied with walking sharks, humanoid bilbies, slugs and monstrous koalas. Some cute, some terrifying but it allowed us to see some common denominators and themes as well as allowing for a broader perspective before the final stage of the design process.

Final Concept

As mentioned above one of the participants took it on her self to collate everyone's ideas into a single concept. She was very keen on drawing and definitely had talent for it. She started taking votes for the participants preferred “body part”, she kept everything divided into head, body and legs like we did at the start. This resulted in a final Kaiju that had a bit of everyone's ideas in it.

Conclusion

It was very important to set the requirements and restrictions to start with and to make sure everyone knew what the difference between a giant monster and a kaiju was. Discussions and the reference materials as well as a quick Wikipedia explanation helped with this.

We had discussion about how much structure we would provide for the participants in the creation of the Kaiju. We went with a fairly flexible structure that was there to support the development of the Kaiju rather than dictate it. There were also thoughts about implementing creative thinking techniques but decided not to go with any of them to make for a more relaxed session.

During the final stage it was important to give the participants the space they needed to steer the process and only act as support if needed.

Inter-generational inductions in the Fab Lab (Albert Park & Men's Shed): CNC and Laser

3 community groups came into the fab lab before the fab lab was open to the general public for inductions. It was all of the attendees first time to The Edge. There was one Men's Shed group from Sunnybank and one from Wilston as well as young people from Albert Park Flexi school. The hope was to mix the groups up and for them to have new conversations, ideas and gain new skills.

Production Notes

It was a great move to ask the wider group what they would like to focus on; it gave the groups the opportunity to choose which induction (out of two) they took part in and the two Men's Shed groups mixed up then as well.

Don't be worried about the frustration that may come up for teenagers working with older adults. These are great moments for learning - For example, a young teenager got frustrated that one of the older men was taking a long time to work out how to use the mouse on the computer; they realised that they know stuff that older people don't know and vise versa.

Find ways for the young people to help the older adults and vise versa. That there is a sharing and a shifting 'expert'

It also may be worth (if you have the opportunity) to unpack older adults

3. Personal reflection on a story you have of an older adult

With the group of young people, for them to see their bias and stereotypes.

From this session we were able to see what skills and interests reside in the groups:

Sunnybank have a whole lot of metal workers.

Wilston have a boat enthusiast, kombucha interest as well as interest in the small 3D printers

For Albert Park, making something that has individual flair was important

Inter-generational inductions in the DML (Albert Park & Men's Sheds): Design for Laser

A group of older men from Wilston & Sunnybank Men's Shed as well as a group from Albert Park Flexi school will be coming in to learn design for the laser cutter in the DML. Both groups have been in the previous week to do inductions in the fab lab.

The Plan for Wednesday 2nd Aug 2017 10-12pm

On Tuesday (the day before) make sure all the computers are good to go in the DML

10am Em & Mick welcome both groups to the Edge in the foyer. Introduce the groups.

Everyone individually introduces themselves to the group.

Ask the group if they have any questions before we begin.

10.10 am Go down and see the laser cutter and what the group will be designing today (A box with a personal design on it)

then the Men shed heads into the DML to begin on computers with Mick.

10.15 am Em will have a chat with the young people from Albert Park about working with older adults.

Look to unpack older adults in the following ways (depending on the group as to which questions will be asked and unpacked):

1. Discuss stereotypes - ask them for their thoughts on older adults ( will expect some of the following: Boring, they are too slow, not cool, I don’t have anything in common)

2. Walking in other people's shoes - ask open ended questions such as:

How did you feel when:

- You forgot something?

- You couldn’t see that well?

- People talk about you as if you are not there?

3. Do you have any stories about an experience you have had with an older adult? It could be a family member, friend, from TV etc.

Mick will look at finding ways for the young people to help the older adults and vice versa during the workshop so that there is a sharing and a shifting 'expert'

Session Plan - Decorated smartphone TV stand

This workshop will use our standard Laser Cut lampshade - Illustrator edition workshop structure, described here: intro_to_illustrator_for_laserand_lamp_making_workshop.docx with minor changes.

Changes include:

Introducing participants to free online tools for making finger-jointed box http://makercase.com & https://makeabox.io/ by measuring their smart phones and
Introducing participants to measuring using a set of vernier calipers. This project also has a greater focus on tracing existing artwork.

Reflection

There were two members from each Men's Shed that came today along with 6 young people and 2 teachers. A total of 12. The Men's Shed groups arrived early and were super keen. Wolfgang had some ideas that he wanted to run by Peter. Alan wanted to come down and take photos of everything in the Fab Lab again. David (first visit for him) wanted a tour.

When the young people arrived there were so many new to The Edge I gave them a brief tour of the space. We then all ended up in the DML for the workshop session on Adobe Illustrator.

It was a large group with a lot of material to cover. I was surprised with the level of focus from all. At times a young person would jump in and help an older man as well as the other way around. These shifting expert moments were the highlights.

At times the majority of the group all needed help from Mick which were the challenging moments. The other challenging moments were when teachers were less support workers and more participants and held up moments.

Another idea is to revisit using Inkscape. The Men's Shed participants and some of the APFS participants were interested in a free version of vector drawing software. so they can design at home/ school and come in to cut on the laser. Also some of the Men's Shed guys indicated that they have time to burn and would be able to practice at home

Reflection

A group of 4 came in from Sunnybank Men's Shed. Albert Park had young people away and with one keen to come in but not wanting to come in by themselves to the Fab Lab with Men's Shed men being there. Wilston Men's Shed have had some personal issues of late so I wasn't surprised that no one ended up coming from there.

Sunnybank were very engaged and happy to begin loosely looking at a stencil design that one of the members drew on paper and then Mick proceeded to put into Illustrator so as to cut on the laser. We all chatted and hung out while this was going on. There were two that had never been in before and they signed up as new users. I noticed that one member was not confident at all on the computer.

They as a group are very keen to keep coming in and to gain more skills using the laser and CNC. There was talk again about getting their own small CNC for the Men's Shed. It was identified today that they would be keen to do the CCC workshop in the future and for one of the computers to go to the Men's Shed to run the small CNC.

We have suggested that they come in with ideas for a personal project next time to try the design for laser with.

Reflection

Today 10 participants and four support workers came in for the 3D printing induction as well as a tour of The Edge. The group was very engaged and focused in the session. There was also great support from the support workers to help guide the participants with extra support. English being all the participants' second language was a hurdle in the paper work for the induction. The 3D printing handbook is dense with a lot to cover. The group helped each other. Lovely to witness. The group was playful and there was much interest in designing and making their own key ring. Also interest in accessing other equipment. Mick also showed the group the laser cutter in action which was intriguing to the group. The session was the right mix of hands-on making and learning.

A group of older men from Wilston & Sunnybank Men's Sheds as well as a group from Albert Park Flexi School will be coming in to learn design for the laser cutter. The Men's Shed groups will be bringing in their own little project ideas to work on. Albert Park are interested in doing inductions on the sewing machines this week.

The Plan for Wednesday 23rd August 10-12pm Fab Lab

Em: Sewing inductions (3 and 1 teacher to do it as well)

1. Everyone introduce self as a whole group if possible

2. Show where the sewing machines live. The irons and ironing boards as well

3. Everyone sit in front of a sewing machine on a table

4. Go through the bobbin process (winding the cotton on and putting it in)

5. Thread the cotton

6. Talk through the machine and the knobs

7. Sew on test piece of material

8. Get bag material. Cut the relevant parts and pin etc

9. Go through the bag making process.

Reflection

Today we were in two distinct groups - Men's Sheds and Flexi School. There were 10 in attendance today. We were set up on two long tables along side each other. It was my first time doing a sewing induction and it went really well! The time flew by and everyone had done some sewing before. Amy had done the least amount. She had some mobility things comes up, however she finished the session wanting to continue with sewing.

The Men's Shed group focussed on Illustrator again and had a design for making a car that one of the guys brought in. Everyone worked on this and they cut it on the laser cutter. Some are more engaged than others. Some want to yarn and hang out. Others really want to learn the programs and skills. There is mixed levels of computer literacy as well, from last week having a guy who never uses a computer to Alan who brought his along with him today and having downloaded the vCarve software is keen to learn what to do.

There has been a lot of interest flagged in continuing design, also 3D printing, and CCC program.

During this session it is intended that the Men's Shed will complete the learning they have been doing with design. Up until this point they have been focusing on doing designs on Illustrator, then they cut these designs on the laser printer. This week that same design in Illustrator will be translated to Vcarve and cut on the CNC. It is hoped that the men will then see the design difference and be able to make choices about what machine is good for what job and be able to design it!

The following was planned for the Flexi School, however they had a camp on and this has been postponed.

Mick lead the induction as well as using the car design that they had been working with previously. I loved seeing the men correct Mick or remind him about a particular detail that was required. These men know wood and know making things with wood. The CNC was playing up (the piece that falls off fell off) This was a little frustrating for the group. One even offered to weld it as a way to fix it as he had experience this happen last time he was on the CNC machine.

I had a quick chat at the end with the group about October and coming in to make stuff for a larger project at The Edge. They seemed keen and said 'we are retired, we have time'.

Today we also confirmed that three of them will be coming in to hack the evening to begin building a computer (CCC project). I am happy to be converting three to coming in as users at a different time.

Deception Bay

One Last Apocalypse is a community engagement and capacity-building project consisting of a series of workshops culminating in an event. It focuses on skill building, development and community ownership through engagements leading to a final event.

The project explores the idea of apocalypse as a conduit for discovery, change and renewal. By definition an apocalypse (Ancient Greek: ἀποκάλυψις apokálypsis, from ἀπό and καλύπτω, literally meaning “an uncovering”) is a disclosure of knowledge or revelation.

PROCESS

This community-driven project will follow an engagement and development process over five months, incorporating educational outcomes in arts, science, technology and culminating in an event held at the Edge and a satellite event in Deception Bay in early December 2017.

The project will be delivered in stages enabling participants to tailor their engagement and build on acquired skills and knowledge gradually. The different phases will focus on the following areas of learning:

Thinking: This project creates a space for the exploration of big ideas through facilitated sessions utilising stimuli such as books, movies, graphic novels and games to encourage learning, sharing and critical thought.

Design: Participants will actively engage with design concepts through play and will be empowered to generate their own designs as a preparation to event design and fabrication.

Making: Participants will be guided through the making process through a series of workshops and will have the opportunity to use the Edge facilities including digital fabrication tools.

Event Planning: A key part of the project is to develop participant's skills in event planning and management. This will be achieved through event capacity building workshops.

PARTICIPANTS

The project seeks to engage diverse community groups to enhance the wealth of ideas, maximise learning and create opportunities for collaboration between individuals from different genders, ages and cultural backgrounds.

Deception Bay:

The Edge, SLQ will work with Deception Bay to make knowledge and skills available. Deception Bay will have the opportunity to deliver a satellite project and events. The Edge will deliver an event management capacity building workshop aimed at regional libraries and community leaders and will look at sending Brisbane project participants to support the delivery of the Deception bay events.

KEY OUTCOMES

• Empower community through an exploration of game design for purpose Capacity building within communities of interest through embedded learning outcomes and modules. • Making skills and equipment accessible to members of the community who may not normally get access • Encouraging members of the community to engage with arts, science and technology including design and digital fabrication tools. • Literacy learning- engaging a non-traditional strategy for literacy engagement. • Continuing to build relationships and connection to community. • Celebrating as a community • Elevating Library profile • Documenting and evaluating the project

WHAT DOES A SATELLITE PROJECT LOOK LIKE?

It is envisioned that Deception Bay Library will engage in the process of One Last Apocalypse on their site, at The Edge as well as via the Wiki. The following is what the engagement could look like. Please note that at each of the stages that are happening onsite at The Edge it is envisaged that a representative from one of the Deception Bay community groups would attend as well. This way a feel for each of the events is experienced and then that person can act as a champion for the satellite events.

1. Apocalypse Book Club series- This phase can include mini events of book club style discussions. This could be an apocalyptic songs book club with a local musician, a film night/ book club, and graphic novel book club. The Edge will offer book club plans as a resource for creating a book club series or one off event.

2. Apocalypse Games- This phase is a series of workshops and gaming opportunities for the community to engage with. The purpose is to develop an understanding of apocalyptic gaming and explore what is fun about that space. This playing also opens up discussions around social literacy, a sense of immersion in a world and critical thinking about a cultural artefact. A potential for this phase is for a game to be run with community groups (for example: at a Flexi school and with DBCYP young dads) and as well as at the library. The Edge can support this process by providing the resources that will be used for the program at The Edge, SLQ.

3. Apocalypse Thinking- The beginnings of thinking about design and working together as a group. Participants will actively engage with design concepts through play and will be empowered to generate their own designs as a preparation to event design and fabrication. The Edge could work towards sending a facilitator out to run this phase at the Deception Bay Library. Outreach groups can attend these events at the library. This could be one large session with skills learning and design challenges being set to complete. Or a back to back skills workshop and design challenges. There would also be options available for community to come into the Edge to the weekend sessions on 27th August & 7th September.

4. Inductions in the Fab Lab space: Organise a time for the flexi school, DBCYP and other participants to travel to The Edge, SLQ at South Brisbane. At The Edge there will be a tour of all the spaces. We would look to there being a main focus on 3D printers as they exist at the library in Deception Bay already. All participants will have the option to leave with something that they have made.

5. Apocalypse Design- Writing and structuring the design with an eye to the final event. Participants will take on board the design and making elements in previous weeks and begin to design the final event at Deception Bay Library. Community groups can come together at the library to have discussions and share/write ideas. A facilitator from the Edge can come out to begin this process.

6. Apocalypse Planning- Learning new event management skills to run the final event. The Event (DBCYP) group will have the opportunity to attend an intensive workshop at The Edge (10th Nov 10-12.30pm) with the hope that they could then run the Deception Bay event with some guidance and support. Library staff will also be invited to attend the PD.

7. Apocalypse Preparation- Preparation for the event. This is the phase of pulling together all of the ideas and making them happen.

8. Execution- Community run the weekend event (with support from the Edge if needed)

9. Feedback process – This will happen post event as well as collating evaluation.

Evaluation

Evaluating this project is important to The Edge, SLQ. Discussions would need to happen to work out the best process for this for the Deception Bay community.

Documenting

The Edge will be documenting the whole process via the wiki. It is envisioned that Deception Bay would also document as well. It will then be included in the wiki for the project. This way other regional libraries can see how The Edge, SLQ and Deception Bay engaged in the process with their specific communities. Marketing

We are looking into sharing access to the poster design for the book club series as well as doing any poster printing on The Edge’s banner printer.

Community dialogue captured

The Edge, SLQ will have a spyder board set up in the foyer of The Edge with the book club images as well as the Greek root meaning of Apocalypse with a question ‘What is Apocalypse to you?’ There will be writing space for community to add thoughts. As each event happens ideas will be captured and added to the board. Deception Bay could also have this growing dialogue at the Library captured using this format or something similar.

After One Last Apocalypse:

The Edge, SLQ have a range of 3D printing specific workshops that have a pile of different applications that could be done with the 3D printers at Deception Bay. During the project process as well as after there can be a process in place to share these resources.

Event experience

Each section of the One Last Apocalypse program is a mini event- Each book club has an install and pack down. Each games night will as well.

An engagement that is emerging is engaging with groups that do event management training. These groups need to find work experience opportunities for their clients.

We have one such group, DBCYP, who are actively helping their clients who are low socio young parents re-entering the workforce. The organisation will help clients come to The Edge from Deception Bay to gain volunteer experience for their CV. Individuals will help with the install of events that are happening as part of the One Last Apocalypse. Clients will also get a tour of all the event spaces at The Edge, SLQ and SLQ.

The Edge is also conducting tours of the event spaces at The Edge and SLQ for DBCYP

Hunger Games at The Deception Bay Library (Aug 3rd 2017)

This activity was designed as a soft entry for the Deception Bay Flexible Learning Centre, to introduce the students to the library environment and a range of tasks that can lead to future learning. Groups will follow clues around the library using iPads, compasses and kits of resources to help answer a question. When the correct answer is found, the directions to the next station are given.

Materials needed

MBRC already has a Hunger Games kit available which included:

• Compasses, list of missions, clue sheets and iPads

• Ensure all the iPads are charged

Identify how and where the “stations” are to be located in the library.

Our kits allow us to have three teams with three people in each.

Recommendations

• More stations - this would be for larger libraries

• Spiel about the book for those who have not read it

• Quick info talk to how to use a compass

• Follow up session/ activities - Orienteering course, Coding, QR making

This activity could be held outside to allow for more stations and a variety of orienteering skills.

This activity could be adapted to suit other books/movies themes

Our session took two hours to complete - this will change depending on number and size of groups.

Each group should have a supervisor to assist with the challenges and keeping the kids on task.

Each group would be best limited to 4 so that each person gets to help out with solving the clues.

Reflection Deception bay

This activity worked well with the students as it kept them engaged, promoted teamwork and discussing the new clues and resources helped with problem solving and life skills.

We had a group of six – good size. This idea could be run without the book connection. It was hard if the kids had not read the book.

Albert Park Flexi school Tuesday 13th June 2017

The First meeting with Albert Park was at a staff meeting where most of the schools teachers were present. Both myself and Mick were present. I shared the overview of the OLA and then the teachers shared that it sounded exciting. In particular the following ideas came out- Ideas of sound, airplanes, Steam punk and baby dragons. The concern that came out was that if the young people did not maintain interest throughout the whole process that they themselves would need to drive the project and due to this they expressed that they would like an option to not continue if this arose. Both Mick and myself expressed that this is sometimes what happens in process like this one for The Edge and that would be fine. To bring the event together we may need to put in extra work from our end to make it all come together. The group expressed that they liked the idea of having a partnership much more than just sending youth to the onsite program. The term ‘node’ was coined.

Inductions were of huge interest and the potential to fit in with the drama department to design a set. OLA was seen to potentially offer a rich learning experience to complement the curriculum needs. We are scheduled to have our second meeting on Tuesday 20th June.

Albert Park Flexi school Tuesday 20th June 2017

Today we met with Heidi, Julie and Kim at the school. We chatted about what they are trying to achieve in terms of the steampunk baby dragons agenda. They are aiming towards a promenade performance on the 1st Sep. There was genuine interest in social literacy and immersive nature of the playing of 'quiet year'. Also, inductions on the laser printer with the aim to design or to make tokens. There was also interest in Illustrator laser printer workshop.

3 students are already working on Event planning skills with invisible ink and they were flagged as potential individuals who may be interested in continuing with these skills. A design project could continue within the school curriculum heading towards the Edge event. we all could see that their steampunk promenade is very focused on safety week and has the potential to open out to bigger ideas after this event. Also, there was interest that there are sewing machines at the edge and making this aware to the young people.

We discussed the importance of that the person/s that come out to Albert Park also are the people they see at The Edge. That the relationship that is being built is of importance. There was interest in joining in on Avengers (of course!) One of the teachers Kim was very interested in attending the design weekends (she could be an advocate for getting young people involved)

As I see it moving forward- a before steampunk phase and an after steampunk phase of engagement.

I see that while the youth are firstly a part of imagining a new steampunk world and creating that event and design as a first step. The second step is to have access to a larger design process with other people and different resources.

Playing quiet year at Albert Park

5 young people in attendance as well as one teacher. The 'how to play' felt soooo long. I am going to create a one page doc with the dot points of how to play for facilitators. Then they can refer to the projection pages for clarification when needed (like the rule book)

Today we were divided into 2 groups. 2 separate games. Young people were engaged and very polite with each other. No contempt tokens used and issues were easily resolved.

When a young person took a while to come up with ideas other young people were impatient and would look at phones. Not all the time but some of the time. Keeping the pace up is really important for the success of this game. Also having an experienced playing in the mix. One of the groups didn't have anyone (I facilitated from the sidelines) due to the numbers and how the group chose to break up into the two groups.

The teacher Heidi was sick today. It was so great of her to come in today for us. I mentioned to Heidi that I am happy to pop out again if she sees that it is needed for engagement. Looking forward to seeing what numbers we get for inductions next week.

Deception Bay conversations:

I have spoken with Gail twice on the phone as well as emails with the community. There was keen interest to partner with The Edge. It seems to hold technology interest to the community. Access to how to offer a world of wider access to technology and knowledge. The community has noticed that the transition to highschool is a large leap and they want to find ways for it to be exciting. See a way for encouraging seeing that there are other options of gaining knowledge. Library has ipads that they are keen to use. 13-15year olds come to ‘game on’ on Tuesdays 5-6pm and they play games on tech. DBCYP has a program for young parents to learn event management skills. They would be keen to jump in and to be involved with organizing the end event. Potential for flexi school to come on as well. We are currently in the process of organizing a meeting with the library and interested community groups to meet up with myself and Daniel Flood in Dbay so as to work out the best approach for all.

Dbay meeting at the Library 21st June

In attendance: Tracy (Library), Gail, Veronica (DBYC), Marylin (Neighbourhood centre), Mick and myself.

Community groups and the library already collaborate and work on projects together.

The Dbay library agenda: focuses on relationship building with the community and users, they want to influence youth and their literacy journey. The community as a whole enjoys celebrating. They are familiar to writing a sustainability plan into the project and will pick up on any successful componants to continue running them. Lisa is interested in having another meeting that involves Lisa the the Moreton bay coordinator as well as Dana who runs the 13-18yr old youth component.

DBYCP: young dads (interested in recording and writing lyrics and making) There is also a learning event management employment skills course. Participants about to finish want a pathway to volunteer opportunities (to work at the Edge) as well as the next round of participants the opportunity to work on community events as well as one of the OLA events at The Edge.

Flexi school- was mentioned as a possible outreach that would fit in.

To follow up- To write down the outline of the project and capture what a dbay satelite program could look like. Send to the library and community groups for discussion.

Dbay meeting at the library 13th July

In attendance: Lisa, Tracy, Dayna, Mick and myself

Lisa gave sign off of the program to go ahead. Tracy suggested a steering group to be set up for the community to move forward. She will aim to have this setup and to meet next. The idea is for the steering group to steer and lead the engagement. DBCYP, flexi school, neighborhood centre as well as the library were identified.

Tracy was clear that the community could only handle an outcome that was on a game board scale. Mick and I shared an example of making tokens, or characters on the 3d printers that then were found by audience in a adventure hunt style event at the library and through the community. This seemed doable.

DBCYP 20th July

A group of 13 came in today for a tour of SLQ as well as the edge. They saw all the event spaces and a couple of the young guys are interested in volunteering with Lance at SLQ. DBCYP are keen to explore how we can partner long term with their young people coming through the events skills course. The Edge facilities and programs got everyone excited.

DBCYP brought in a few of their event trainee people to share their ideas that they have come with for the shopping centre OLA engagements. They are exploring ideas of apocalaypse as revelation.

1. craft ideas of creating dolls from natural materials that reveals parts of self.

2. Projected images (map and locations in dbay) then people can add objects like large crabs, shells etc to the image on the wall.

There were 6 people in attendance- myself, Jennie, veronica, Gail, Tracy, Leonie & Kerry. It was a lively discussion with lots of ideas bubbling to the surface. We discussed 'scale' and how the games night could be big life size games as well as teeny weeny ones. All were excited and Leonie and Tracy put their hands up to write the plan for the first event. great outcome. DBCYP are all set for the shopping center. they have the iPad and projector and stencils that they cut out on the laser. The library has the iPad case as well. Flexi school was not present today. We put it down to the school holidays begin early for them.

QPASTT

I spoke with Stephanie (the director) on the phone. She shared that the main areas that their programming is focussed on are: Refugee hearing Trauma recovery- it is like mental health but it is not mental health. I sent through more details to her further explaining the project. She then mentioned that they are over committed for the next 6 months however, they may have some clients/volunteers that may be interested in attending the public program onsite. She asked what resources we may have to support their clients to attend. I shared that we could put a call out to our networks to see if we could get one/some support people. I mentioned that it would be great to have the support from their end for feedback, i.e. that they have a way to speak in the languages and pass on any feedback so that we can better improve the public program. She was open to this. The next step is to follow up with the promo for distribution.

I followed up and there was no registered interest. I then followed up again via phone and offered inductions in the fabrication lab and a whole other conversation opened up. Steph identified a program- Ucan2 that is run by Meriam at QPASST that may be a fit for us to engage with. Steph and I just needed to keep chatting to work out a way forward. I have reached out to Meriam via email and am trying to reach her by phone now.

Conversations with Meriam- is super excited to bring in 12 UCan2 participants that are at TAFE with 5 support workers and volunteers. A 3D printing workshop was identified as being a great place to start with the group. She also has other groups at other TAFEs in the program that she is keen to bring in. I will aim to meet with her in person to chat the larger project and how we can work together more. There is also another group that has been identified as a potential by stephanie- young men. The interest is in Apocalypse and making music and recording it in the recording studio.

Victor from QPASTT came in on 5th Sep to see the spaces and chat about what it is we do here at the edge. We spoke about the young men and that they are super keen to come in. There is 8 of them and victor spoke to one when I was meeting with him to check on dates etc.

Engaging Seniors in Deception Bay

This was a very organic process engaging seniors in the Caboolture region.

One of the librarians is a volunteer at a local computing club and we were chatting about the CCC program

She mentioned it to the group. They were excited and began to come into The Edge to do the self paced program. Soon one of the members was trained as a trainer and organised a hall in the Caboulture region to train up 12 people to do the program.

Meanwhile back at the Deception Bay library they had been working on getting approval to run the program out of the library for teens in the region. They see that the program will enhance family life by having access to a computer and not just a smart phone to do assignments and homework.

The program has received approval and will be run out of the library from Feb 2018. They will have the support of 13 seniors who have trained in the program.

Engaging seniors at The Edge

The Edge worked with two Men's Sheds (Wilston and Sunnybank). The process began with a discussion out at the Men's Sheds, then a series of onsite inductions.

The inductions began with a focus on working with wood and with computers. They were all timed to either be with young people from the Flexi School involved as well, or at the same time and in the same space.

Nerf guns workshop in Deception Bay

Deception Bay Flexible Learning Centre (Sep 7th 2017)

Activity Outline

For this activity we set out to work together to create the rules for a new game (like setting the rules to a new world). Discuss and agree on the rules then attempt to play; modify the rules as you go to get it right.

Materials needed

MBRC Libraries already had a nerf gun kit consisting of 15 guns, 100+ bullets, targets made from plastic cups. Group size of 10 was aimed for so that discussions about the rules for each game were controlled. 10 guns or sharing of guns (depending on size of nerf kit)

We held this activity in the school hall which allowed for control of the movement of players and the retrieval of bullets.

Recommendations

• Ensure you have an area to help confine the stray bullets

• Have extra bullets to allow for lost or damaged ones

• Introduce the activity and then bring the guns out, they can be distracting

• This activity could be held outside in a designated area if a hall was not available

• It would be best to have 1 or 2 supervisors per group to help with rule modification and scoring

Our session took two hours to allow for discussion, set up, playing and pack up. If a longer session was held then food/snacks could be an advantage. To make a longer session, keep changing the rules and try them out.

Discussion

These are the games rules created this time:

1. Setup the cones in zone. Players stand around the zone with their backs to the zone. On the count, they all turn around, drop to the lie down sniper position and the first one to shoot a cone down wins. We did it in a circle formation

2. Set the cones in a line. Shooters lie down, stay 1 metre away and shoot 1 shot. If they miss the next player has their go. If they do hit a cone they then move back a specified distance e.g. 50cm and try again. The winner is the person who gets the furthest from the cones. You can set a time frame for the length of this game

3. Each player has six shots. Shooters take turns to shoot as many cones as they can with only their six shots (they can have more than 1 go). Set up the cones and the winner is the player that can knock down the most cones with their 6 shots. This is good because if they shoot from the right angle they may get 2 cones with 1 shot

4. All players standing at one point and see who can get their bullet to go the furthest distance. There is no target, this is simply a distance challenge.

Refection

We had a group of 10 - More than that would be hard to control. Definitely don’t get the guns out till the discussion of rules and games are done!

Planning For Libraries PD

Part 1

Discuss how to integrate The Edge workshops into strategic planning. Negate what the library does- it offers a meeting place as well as texts.

Being a meeting place and having texts, libraries are in a great position to community build and to create new texts. OLA is designed to develop skills in critical literacy, design and event planning which will build community and new texts. A sense of ownership and placemaking.

Use One Last Apocalypse as a case study including satellite process of Deception Bay.

OUTREACH

A series of workshop engagements that may begin offsite and then travel onsite to The Edge (Library). The workshop series is dependent on each community groups' needs and interests and will be tailored accordingly. However, at some point all will explore the theme of Apocalypse in a way that relates to or is of interest. This could be the sharing of personal stories, dreams or designing apocalyptic fashion or even an apocalyptic put put course.

When each group comes onsite to The Edge (library), there will be the opportunity to collaborate and have conversations across communities (in house and other outreach communities).

IN HOUSE

The OLA will be a rich landscape to unpack sophisticated ideas that are not widely discussed and accessible.

It will be an ongoing dialogue around Apocalypse onsite at The Edge on Monday evenings with weekends added into the mix towards the end of the project.

Areas of learning that will be covered throughout OLA:

Thinking:

This project creates a space for the exploration of big ideas through facilitated sessions utilising stimuli such as books, movies, graphic novels and games to encourage learning, sharing and critical thought.

Design:

Participants will actively engage with design concepts through play and will be empowered to generate their own designs as a preparation to event design and fabrication.

Making:

Participants will be guided through the making process through a series of workshops and will have the opportunity to use The Edge facilities including digital fabrication tools.

Event Planning:

A key part of the project is to develop participant skills in event planning and management. This will be achieved through focused event capacity workshops and support by a producer through a series of event planning meetups.

Youth Engagement at The Edge

The Edge worked with Albert Park Flexi school to tailor an ongoing engagement. It began at the Flexi school with a game and then moved onsite to The Edge with a range of inter-generational inductions. The group then used these skills to help make the physical design of cardboard kaiju as well as the sound design. The group changed each week with two young people being consistent throughout the program. Some of these programs were then deployed with the Deception Bay Flexischool.
