3D printing Character & Diorama (Book club) Session 1

Activity Outline

We explained how stage and optical displays are made. We discuss how we can use these “stages” to capture different environments/worlds to use in photo, movie or cartoon images

Materials needed

Diorama in flat form (templates supplied by SLQ)

Pencils

Computer and colour printer with internet access

Hot glue guns, glue sticks and rubber bands

Safety knife

Optional extras – led lights and batteries

Use Youtube and Internet to research dioramas

Discussion

We discussed what we would like our stage (world) to look like and thought about the concept of 3D visuals that we would need (ground/floor, sky/roof) and how we need to get the correct size for our dioramas. Using imaginations and mathematics we could bring our worlds to life

Reflection

We had a group of 10 – good size. Some kids need help with getting the print out sizes correct. Having an extra person to assist in this area would be helpful

Discussion

After seeing how a 3D printer works and understanding that it can take “hours” to print something. We designed our character/ item in Tinkercad and then imported it into the 3D printer software. Here we could resize the item to fit the print pad and to set the standard of printing. The standard of printing determined how long it would take to print so we made adjustments to the standard to suit the sessions time frame

Reflection

We had a group of 4 – this will depend on how many printers you have. The printer played up (like any technology session can) A back up session/time frame is advised.

APOCALYPSE Research

An apocalypse (Ancient Greek: ἀποκάλυψις apokálypsis, from ἀπό and καλύπτω, literally meaning “an uncovering”) is a disclosure of knowledge or revelation. In religious contexts it is usually a disclosure of something hidden, “a vision of heavenly secrets that can make sense of earthly realities”.

APOCALYPSE

Apocalypse remains double loaded; it denotes violent decomposition of the old and at the same time reveals the emergence of the new.

Apocalypse is in the context of transitional narratives, highlighting its presence at all moments of paradigmatic change.

1950s and 1960s Alien invasions gradually evolved into …

1980s and 1990s major malfunctions of domestic techno-cybernetic systems.

Onwards, the deliberate action performed by the mechanical or the digital against the human.

The end as either a threat (pre apocalypse) or reflecting the post apocalypse situation.

Apocalypse as identity construction - in a wider cultural context, apocalypse constitutes a vital component of the subjects' experiential territory and as such plays a formative role in the process of identity construction.

Radical change occurs in the narrative of apocalypse

In current parlance ‘apocalypse’ means upheaval and destruction but originally it implied also discovery and epiphany (the revelation of something new and often better)

The return of the Messiah tends to only happen after a considerable portion of humanity has died. Salvation following global apocalypse is usually attained only by a few.

In scenarios of apocalypse, at the heart of terror there lies always the explosive combination of the possible and the unknown. The possibility of transgression and the crossing of a line from what is familiar into unimagined, unimaginable territory.

All The Pretty Horses

Evil and suffering inherent in existence (man-made and natural), transience of life and the inevitability of death. The symbolic resonance of blood and the redemptive presence of horses.

Title taken from a lullaby in which a child is promised ‘ When you wake, you shall have/All the pretty little horses’.

The horses are otherworldly beauty in the novel and imbue the text with a quality that hints at some wholly transcendent and absolute source of divinity. An understanding of the darker truth of the world - that evil and suffering lie at the core of existence - can lead to spiritual wisdom or gnosis and in traditions like Gnosticism and Buddhism, where ignorance is equivalent to sin, spiritual wisdom becomes synonymous with saving grace.

The origin story of superheroes is important in films - how they got their powers and the emotional struggle to come to terms with having these powers. It’s a huge change and personal shift.

A personal apocalypse and world - Avert the alien forces that threaten the earth, but can only be effective together. Courage of individuals is vital; results are achieved when a team operated as one. War like. Protecting what is and, in doing so, the world and humans will be changed.

Post Event Reflection

It was lovely to be back in the foyer space with no other events on in the space. There were 3 attendees. All had read the novel and were interested in chatting about it. All had some strong views about the novel as well. Two were frustrated by the book and that it took 200 pages to get into a rhythm of reading. Had faced moments of wanting to throw the book at the wall. Then in the next breath shared that this is why they are coming along to these book clubs - to be challenged and to experience things outside of what they would normally choose for themselves.

This week we took a moment to chat about Apocalypse as well and the larger project which was great and felt like the group were now more inclined to sign up for the game night series as well.

It is still emerging that attendees are seeing the facilitator as being an 'expert' in the genre and content that is being explored. This highlights even more that the book club plans/notes (package) need to be extensive.

We had a small group of two show up from the public, one who had never been to The Edge before. The session was scheduled to happen 6-7.30pm and everyone left just before 8pm. Such an engaged conversation. We spoke about status, feminism, what the book brought up for us personally and if it relates to our current world. How Margaret Atwood only writes about things that have already happened - so we looked at real life influences in the book (Germany and how quickly the Berlin wall went up and the bodies being thrown over). we had one participant who had read the novel and watched the series. I had watched the series and then one participant who had only read the book. This made for a great conversation as well.

The quote from the novel 'I am awake now'- opened discussion around how we see only our world with our story laid over it. What are we missing in reality?

Reflection

We were in a smaller space this week due to the Science event being on in the DML. The same aesthetic to the set up was used (lounge room feel with different seating options and intimate lighting). It was a little crazy to try to identify the book club people with so many people waiting for the science event.

It was a lively discussion and the group really wanted to be there to talk about ideas and the book. Four of the five people in attendance had their own copy of the book and also took their own personal notes throughout.

Using the visualiser was great and added a moving visual element that made the space a little more alive. I would suggest that as everyone had a copy of the book they could have selected pages and brought it up to show the group as well.

I did not collect any data on devices this week as the group was very intimate and also there were a few repeat attendees and it just didn't feel right.

An avant-garde film maker whose works showed at GOMA in 2017.

Materials needed

Access to the following short films:

1. DER BRÄUTIGAM (The Bridegroom)

2. DIE KOMÖDIANTIN (The Comedienne)

3. DER ZUHÄLTER (The Pimp) 1968 AGES 15+

An enigmatic and complex short by Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub (to whom Fassbinder dedicated his first film), The Bridegroom, The Comedienne and The Pimp consist of three disparate sequences, including a minimalist play adaptation from Fassbinder's Anti-Teater troupe and another in which Fassbinder portrays a pimp (one of his earliest on-screen roles). Irm Hermann and Hanna Schygulla make appearances, as well as Fassbinder's long-time composer Peer Raben.

4. DER STADTSTREICHER (THE CITY TRAMP)

Fassbinder's earliest surviving film follows a Munich vagrant who discovers a gun on the street and becomes consumed with thoughts of suicide. After being rejected by the Berlin Film School, Fassbinder made this Eric Rohmer-inspired short with the financial help of his lover Christoph Roser, who in turn was granted the title role. The City Tramp also marked the film debut of Irm Hermann, who would go on to play major parts in 19 of Fassbinder's films.

5. DAS KLEINE CHAOS (THE LITTLE CHAOS) 1966-67 AGES 15+

In this ode to Jean-Luc Godard and gangster films, three youths selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door decide to supplement their income with robbery. In his first starring role, Fassbinder cast himself as a nihilistic, movie-loving hoodlum and set the stage for his later unofficial gangster trilogy (Love is Colder Than Death, Gods of the Plague and The American Soldier).

Think about this aspect of his work:

'It concentrates on the performance aspect of Fassbinder's film and television work: the very particular language of gesture and posture that he first developed in his 'anti-theatre' ensemble. On screen, Fassbinder extended this performance style to include distinctive strategies of staging and editing. The result is an innovative path forged between analytical distance and intense emotion'

It was a cold and rainy night. One of the participants came to The Edge and we walked over together. I then waited outside for for other people to arrive. I had a small Edge postcard sign with me. One other person turned up and we headed inside and found our seats.

We watched all 5 short films in a row and then we reflected in the foyer of the cinema. One of the participants was an actor and the other was a student. It was a nice reflection and one of the participants and I kept chatting as we left the building. She showed interest in the larger project as well from our conversations. The other participant started off coming to games nights and then to the design sessions and now has come to a book club event.

We had three participants to this Book club session. One has been to two previous book club events and two were new to the book club series. I found out that one attendee comes in to use the computers in the DML and found out about the book club that way. He had not seen Cleverman at all. He left early. Grace really kept him in the loop of the conversation and the back story of the series, however he left saying that he would go and watch the series now!

The remaining two engaged in conversation until well after finish time. It is hard to get people to leave book club!

In season 2, SLADE experiments on KOEN’s blood to learn more about the Cleverman's abilities. • SLADE offers WARUU money to provide housing for The Zone people. And in return, SLADE wants KOEN. Activity Outline

In this session, we look at how comics are drawn and the planning that goes into character development and story lines. We discuss how our characters could help the world. We discuss laws and rules of society and the world in general.

Materials needed

A4 paper

Watch a video of how comic/graphic books are drawn and designed.

Discussion

We looked into how comic/graphic designers would do sketches rather than full cartoon/drawing until their ideas were approved then the real drawing would begin. The participants were asked to think about who their character was going to be. Everyone drew their comic character and listed what power/s their character had and what their character’s main qualities were. We discussed what type of outfit, including material and colours their character would be wearing. We also took an A4 paper and folded it into 4 and those that wanted to could draw a basic 4 scene action for their character. We discussed other things that appear in comics like word sounds. “BAM, KAPOW”

Reflection

We had a group of 6 – good size. Having more “comics” rather than “graphic novels” would be better. We worked with what we had in the library.

One Last Apocalypse is all about engaging your community in discussion and ideas. It can sometimes seem daunting to be the one to facilitate these discussions.

Here are some points to consider when working with and collaborating with your community:

1. The most important thing is to create a safe, caring and respectful space.

2. Your role is to facilitate discussion. What does facilitate mean? You don't have to have the answers; you just need to provide the questions. Don't be afraid to stand back and listen. Let's hear something from everyone in the group. Encourage ideas. Use 'we' rather than 'you'. You are working 'with' not telling 'how' or 'what' to do. You provide the opportunity for learning and guidance through the parameters of the environment.

3. There are no wrong ideas, only new ones!

The origin story of superheroes is important in films - how they got their powers and the emotional struggle to come to terms with having these powers. It’s a huge change and personal shift. For example the Hulk's journey.

Activity Outline

The idea of this session was to have the participants consider the questions of who, what, where, when and why to having an event

Materials needed

Card paper

Stamps and stamp pad, 3D foam spacers, design cutter

Pens, pencils

Recommendations

We asked a card making craft person to attend this session as she provided the different stamps and cutters for use, as opposed to purchasing the tools.

Discussion

We discussed how to put the information required on an invitation to make it eye catching and decorative at the same time. The instructor supplied a range of card making pictures and decorations on a card-stock so the kids could see what they looked like. Certain embellishments needed to be made using different punches and stamps. They then made their own card using their own ideas and the equipment supplied. Whilst designing their cards we involved the kids in conversation about how they would plan their event and what items they might require to create the invitations.

Reflection

We had a group of eight – good size. The kids were limited by what the instructor had brought in the way of stamps and designs. Purchasing stamps and punches can be expensive

The mask making session explored how we can cover our identity or protect ourselves. Discuss what senses are for and how they help us in our day to day life.

Before starting do a debrief and training session on hot glue guns and what to do if you get glue on your skin. Watch a video/Youtube for ideas and shapes

Discussion

We discussed whether we needed a full-face mask or a half mask. We looked at how to shape the mask to get a snout shape. We included measuring and shapes (mathematics) to help us get our desired effects

Keep the pace up but not rushed.

Give people time to arrive. Socialise. Grab a drink (water, juice etc) and snack.

Welcome everyone to the first book club session at The Edge - not your ordinary one.

Introduce yourself.

Ask participants to share their names and past bookclub experiences.

Introduce the theme of Apocalypse: literal meaning “an uncovering” is a disclosure of knowledge or revelation. In religious contexts it is usually a disclosure of something hidden, “a vision of heavenly secrets that can make sense of earthly realities”.[1]

DISCUSSION

Get everyone to find a partner to discuss what apocalypse means to them.

Come back as a group.

Brainstorm further and unpack this big term.

Write them up somewhere in the space (The mood board?)

Pass around short snippets of song lyrics (for example: Where Have All The Flowers Gone, A Hard Rains A Gonna Fall, No Future - God Save The Queen and It's The End Of The World As We Know It). Participants guess who and what the song is.

Ask the question and break off into groups - Are there any that strike you as particularly profound or interesting?

Listen to a song that the facilitator plays live. Establish as a group who and what it is.

Break off - Have you listened to other songs by this songwriter or similar? Can you discern a similarity — in theme, mood — between them? Or are they completely different? SHARE

Offer participants the opportunity to chose a song for the group to listen to: (have device with Spotify available). Discuss as they are chosen.

5 minute introduction of the topic of apocalypse (in the commonly used sense) According to Isaac Asimov's Book of Facts (1979), an Assyrian clay tablet dating to approximately 2800 BC was unearthed bearing the words “Our earth is degenerate in these latter days. There are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end. Bribery and corruption are common.”

Some Romans believed that Rome would be destroyed in 634 BC Jesus said, “Verily I say unto you, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Jesus’ Apostles believed that Jesus would return in their lifetimes

Since then there are sssooo many records of predictions of Apocalypse (in the common sense of the word)

When I was at High School there were rumours about the end of the world

Is the idea of climate change apocalyptic? What will it really mean? Perhaps the deaths of 4 billion people - still not an apocalypse as such? A nuclear winter could be more impactful maybe?

But in the last century - with atomic bombs and with climate change - we have a sense of how the apocalypse could technically actually happen - does that make the threat any more real though? No one has dropped an atomic bomb since WWII and insurance companies are anxious that climate change issues are resolved.

Why do writers love the apocalypse? Writers love to paint pictures in your head. And what could be more compelling than the destruction of EVERYTHING and EVERYONE? What would it look like? What would it sound like?

Apocalypse used to refer to a revealing - particularly a revealing from heaven that would change things on earth. (this is why in the Bible it’s called the Book of Revelations). Apocalypse can also be personal. It can be the death of a loved one or the end of a relationship or the loss of a job - now I’m assuming that most people here would have experienced some sort of apocalypse in their life and perhaps that apocalypse taught them new things about themselves or provided them with new opportunities - would one person like to offer their experience of a personal apocalypse that led to something new?

Song Club Refelction

The event itself was set up during the day with the help of 2 DBCYP volunteers. This aspect went really well. The volunteer induction and process. When the event came about in the evening we had 28 sign ups online and then 9 actually showed to the event. Given that it is a free event this drop-off is to be expected.

The lounge room feel of the space that we set up was perfect for this event. It was a welcoming space with intimate lighting. The only aspect that did not work was the positioning of the snacks (chips) being far away from people. Food should be within reaching distance to add to the relaxed vibe.

The collection of feedback on the devices on the night was the best way to capture this event.

I also see that opportunities for break off groups during the event would have been beneficial as well as an actual break.

The conversation was vibrant. As a group they got to a point where Apocalypse can be anything. It is a personal thing when it comes to personal apocalypse.

Preparation

Lead a discussion group of young people, talking about life events that fit within the spectrum of the One Last Apocalypse theme. For example: change, renewal, rebirth etc…..events that had an impact on them. Have the participants select songs that relate. From these songs create an Apocalyptic Playlist.

This playlist will form the backbone of all future project events as music really activates the space, and the youth feel a sense of ownership as it is the playlist that they created.

Recommendations

Use an Apple Music or a Spotify account to add the songs and create a playlist. Have the activity in a central and easily accessible area as this activity generates a lot of interest from other library users, I recommend holding this event early on as it will draw in more interest in the project as a whole and you will gain participants through this for future sessions.

Discussion

Some life events that came up in our discussions were: change in schools, change of social groups, the birth of a baby in the family, death of a beloved family member, a new pet etc. Discuss how they felt at those times and assist them in selecting songs that hold a relatable significance of that event for them. Talk about why and what the song means or how it helped.

This activity has a wonderful bonding and mentoring element to it and really solidified the group in the sharing of these stories. It seemed to be very cathartic, and the group discussions were very engaging and participation was from everyone. They all wanted a copy of the playlist so it is a good idea to share it amongst the group.

Reflection Deception Bay

We have a group of 5. Good size group. Too large and the conversation about the music could get lost and the music would have to be played louder which might not suit the library space

Evaluation Deception Bay

After this session it is clear that deception bay will now run weekly book clubs for 10-15 year olds. They are talking to management about it being under a book club banner.

They have seen real outcomes- new pathways to engage with a demographic that they have previously struggled with. They feel strongly that this should be shared with and accessed by other regions who struggle with this demographic.

The group last night felt safe to talk about big stuff. There was a mix of Indigenous, Caucasian, vulnerable kids, a child who has emigrated from Peru and children who come from double incomes. There was a realisation that they all had the same issues.

After a successful 3 week book club program we will continue to roll out another month now.

The Edge has themed this book club series aroung Apocalypse so that the series as well as the larger project has a through line.

EXAMPLE QUESTIONS & ACTIVITIES

1. Can you pick out a passage that strikes you as particularly profound or interesting?

2. Have you read any other books by the author? Can you discern a similarity- in theme, writing style- between them? Or are they completely different?

3. If you were to talk to the author, what would you want to know?

4. Fill a large shopping bag or box with objects from novels. Have everyone pull out an object and guess which novel (and author), which character, and at which point in the story (if relevant) the prop is used.

5. Chose someone to read quotes by or about various characters — from the current book or past book selections. Members try to guess who said what and when. If you want, divide into teams and keep score.

The Quiet Year Games night at Deception Bay 3rd Oct 4-6pm

Materials needed

Projector & Computer (or app on phone) to display powerpoint instructions

Powerpoint of the games' rules to refer to when needed

Facilitators notes to help with explaining

Contempt tokens (laser cut)

Coloured pencils/pens

Plain piece of paper for map

Paper for writing the Abundance & Scarcity

10 dice per table

Quiet year cards

Music for atmosphere

Preparation

Play the game beforehand

Recommendations

Only 2-4 players (including you) and a facilitator needs to be at each table.

Small table so that it is an intimate setting

Have cheat sheet projected throughout so that everyone can see it (last page on the powerpoint)

Keep the pace up at the beginning to get through all of the rules

Introduction

Explain why we are playing this game (The purpose is to develop an understanding of apocalyptic gaming and explore what is fun about that space)

Get started (refer to the facilitator notes and the rules)

Discussion

We had 3 groups of 4 ( mixed adults and teens) We began by explaining that we are entering a new world which is to be designed by the group and we had to discuss and agree on what resources we needed and what was available. Then we could make a start on our map. We all took turns at reading out a card and then discussed how that affected our world. We then made the changes needed on our map. This worked well for learning collaboration, problem solving and life skills. As there is no right or wrong in this game the teams had to work together and come up with compromises to continue forward, these results could be realistic or fantasy.

Reflection

We had a group of 7 which worked well ( 3 groups). Great game kept the groups talking and discussing the ideas.
