What did you think was successful about the workshop? The getting a large group

with 5 different ideas
To unpack very concrete ideas and consider the ephemeral potential of these ideas
to settle on a single idea

What did you learn about the workshop?

kids are used to structured activities
you cant half-a*s* homework activities. you need to be properly prepared and have time to introduce the activity

Can you note any ideas for future implementation?

Homework activity was rushed
the Pintrest board was great and subtly (quietly with out much discussion) informed the.
Again the participants automatically think in very concrete terms- i think because contemporary society is so literate in film and screen base story telling- and so most of their concepts are fairly representational. They are pretty good at analysing themes but by and large aren't as confident at abstracting ideas into textures, forms, colour movement etc.

Are there any immediate actions arising from this workshop?

Wonder if a Teams type communication platform could be used to increase engagement between session and to facilitate activities like the Homework activity and possibly a crew pintrest. maybe the school has a platform we can use.

What did you think was successful about the workshop? Got people making, more people than previous weeks, smiles at end. Swapping marquettes led to some really interesting things

What was/were your favourite Designed Thing/s from the workshop? They all were great!

There's a teleporting unicorn that has a whole backstory that could leap across the room, that's wonderful, and an animal/plant skeletal creature that the children can 'rebuild' with lights and sounds to reward them. There's a mermaid who keep an endangered animal (Lungfish?) safe in her kingdom: which is a bunch of 'roaming' pieces kids can use to make a cubby house! There's also Creepy Larry! and his backstory is coming to life, does he collect dreams of hope to help our skeletal horse on its way?

Notes: Creepy Larry collects dreams, maybe hopeful ones to help Rocu. His mouth could move either with projection or motors to become extra creepy. Discussion around if he is evil or if he just needs a friend.

Ociana

Two parts of the unicorn that fly across the sky in a huge rainbow. The structure she is jumping through represents another dimension and is very sparkly.

Rocu

Gameified, placing bits back onto rocu helps heal him, and he becomes more green.

Mermaid

She lived in Brisbane River and cares for an endangered animal, Lungfish?.

Playground

This participant came late, so jumped in at the marquette stage making useful shapes that later evolved into a playground when the marquettes were passed on.

Facilitation notes:

People don't arrive at start time so had to restart several times

No one who came initally was there last week so had to give them an 'elevator pitch' of the grumpus and the project in order to start. This should be factored into all future workshops probably.

Only got to trade marquettes once, as people seemed to want longer to gestate their ideas

lots of smiles at end

I feel I could have better demonstrated some cardboard techniques.

What did you think was successful about the workshop?

* Using Straws and tape as a scaled down analogue for the beam construction worked really well. Participants in this activity quickly experimented with construction techniques for this and were well on the way to completing a sophisticated model by the end of the session.

Participants in the playdoh activity grasped the concept of modelling a dead specimen of the creature.
most groups engaged in some form of web research to inform their model.
the capacity for smaller partnerships within groups to focus on a particular aspect, texture, a particular limb etc allowed for increased engagement. |^What did you learn about the workshop?| * Don't try and give a boring presentation on a Thursday Arvo after 3pm. - We had planned to spend the first half of the workshop discussing the topic of interacting and child centred design and some of the wider goals of the project (see above) but the Young People weren't really receptive to this and rather than push thru this, we went around it. On reflection this kind of discussion is best introduced as a response to something that is prompted thru a busy hands exercise.

|^Can you share any ideas for future implementation?| next session we could:

further develop refine these designs maybe by passing them to the next group and further consider the biology and or Lore (magical mechanics of the creature.
look at designing the Locale or consider the interactions that could occures between the 2 characters or the characters and the local
consider whether we even need to represent both creature- maybe we could perform a subtraction of the dominant character (like Godot)

|^Are there any immediate actions arising from this workshop?| Ms Cooke created a Group padlet for for everyone involved in the group to upload resources or news about our design. This platform has a lot of potential to extend the young people's engagement beyond the once a week session and as such we need to populate it with interesting content. This may also be a good place to post our updates about the different crews' progress - something students seem interested in. |

Students were keen to dive in and explore and create with the materials

Students learnt about gravity, cardboard texturing, paper texturing, planning vs free play and experimenting with materials

If free creating more time for spirits is needed, we allocated an hour, but extended to an hour and 45mins, 2.5 hrs would be better

not from a participant but i was very entertained by myself [Mick] when i said that “pegs are a thing - only cavemen hold things with their fingers”

The students all made wonderful things, however Hannah's free play sculpture was particularly striking, as were the simplicity of the diamantic inspired sculptures

What did you think was successful about the workshop?	we made strong progress and will be ready start fabricating our component next week.

The BSH crew will

design dragon, cave and koi for external fabrication.
begin fabricating the dragon head and thereby establish aesthetic.

What did you learn about the workshop?	Hands on interaction can be achieved in a COVID safe manner if children make and take a koi and or koi added during the day are installed out of reach or disposed of intermittently.

What was/were your favourite Designed Thing/s from the workshop?	i love the way we were able to remove the Koi and cave as responsiblities for the group to complete (koi outsource or made as part of spirits activity, Cave simplified and outsourced

We discussed the cultural significance of the Koi and some other ways we could represent them inspired by these.

We then broke into 4 groups.

Further Reflection

Koi

Both Koi options are great and have a lot of potential for sophisticated display, simple activation activities in the gallery and as stand alone activation workshops.

A simplified version of Origami and kite toy (straw, string, cardboard roll, and paper scales tail) could be developed for the activities in the gallery. As state above these could be take home or disposed at the end of the session to allow a covid friendly hands on interaction.

a middle ground workshop version could be developed for a functional kite or medium complexity origami koi activity (possibly including paper making ). and the actual exhibition pieces could be a school of very beautiful 30-50cm origami koi or moving kites full size (computer fan driven tails). Rozina suggested that these could also be made as a variation on the Sprits lantern making workshop.

Cave

while the cave prototype made today was not a fantastic development [really only a slightly larger version of the one made a month (or more) ago with Billie and Andrei] the discussion was significant. We disccussed:

how the Dragon would be positioned- tucked up in a corner tired, scared, hiding, cowering laying low to the ground
how children would maybe see the tail out of the opening and go in to explore what else was in there… and then spend time with the head
the scale/dimensions of the whole installation
how the cave did not necessarily need a ceiling (maybe just sheets (scrim) as helen suggested
how if it was situated in a corner, the entrance to the cave could be quite simple.

Rozina and i also discuss riffing off the idea that the young people had for a layered construction method that i believe we can fabricate vey easily using layers of scrap cardboard to make “sedimentary” rock entrance and possibly some bolders in the cave to introduce some levels. I'll prototype this during the week.

^What did you learn about the workshop?|Participants are keen to make but also relieved that there will be some assistance completing the sculpture |

Can you share any ideas for future implementation?	we tried to make an articulated model of the figure for posing but ended up with the participants posing me…. on the table.

The plan going ahead is for us staff to build a stand and head structure and participants will commence skinning ,styling, adding detail to the head next week. It may also be useful to build a temporary frame for the other parts of the sculpture to see the size proportions of the beaste
Can you share any memorable moments or quotes from participants?	it was nice to see new people being welcomed to the group and relativity quickly joining in
What was/were your favourite Designed Thing/s from the workshop?	the effect to make the beard is interesting.

Posing our beaste

We started by discussing the state of mind of the beaste

but the easiest way to workout how to pose our beaste was for one of us (me) to allow the group to a body.

Textures

we created Specimen Maquette (like a biologists sample preserved in jar)

and then moved onto what cardboard and paper effects were appropriate to represent our beast

is an appropriate short hair / skin (like horses have) and crunched up strips of corrugation might be good for the matted beard.

We also went thru and scaled the sculpture in reference to our square beams

What did you think was successful about the workshop?	Kids responded well to materials, enjoyed learning new proceses and expressing their imagined things. Chatting to kids 1-on-1 who were struggling, asking open ended questions about their idea to get them going with ideas.
What did you learn about the workshop?	Pacing, in the second session we left more time at the end for the kids to shar their works. Give them enough time to bring their ideas to fruition.

Phil & CC worked on creating a structure to support the “mask” and Eyes,

What did you think was successful about the workshop?	One of my favourite parts of this kind of work is seeing members of the community engaged in problem solving and getting into the zone with their making. Its great seeing people who don't really know each other come together and work out (and execute) elegant solutions to novel problems - like how do you get a cardboard eye mask to sit right on a giant cardboard deer skull? or how. am i going to get facearms to look lifelike when made of cardboard, hot glue and tape.
What did you learn about the workshop?	a variation on the cheesey Field of Dreams quote “build it and they will come”. My version… if you can get them to come, they will build it.

Notes regarding Designed Thing Submission	In this session participants were introduced to the Fabrication Lab and came up with designs for different components of the Dragon head. We started the session by showing participants the straw maquette that i had developed and how i had used this to make a full size frame for the head. Participants were then broken into teams again to start creating ful size models for the components they had planned the week before.

What did you think was successful about the workshop?	While we didn't have a great deal of time (after getting from school to the edge, and then doing a tour of the building before starting work for the week) participants were pretty productive and seemed to have a good time. Participants seemed genuinely happy to see how their ideas and designs had manifested in the frame for the skull and this inspired them to continue developing the other features.

In hind site the design of the scale and spines will make this sculpture. the scale is a simple, easy to mass produce component but creates an awesome skin texture. the spines are also simple but will also create a great visual impact in repetition. while prep on these feels a little loke a significant labour load the repetitive work does provide a simple way for individuals to make a visible contribution.

What did you learn about the workshop?	the young people enjoyed the repetitive production of the smaller components - I guess that they felt productive and confident when making something simple. The young people working on applying the scales (its a difficult thing to get started and in contrast to the simple repetitive operations involved in prepping the scales or making the teeth they we concerned about “getting it wrong”. it would have been beneficial to model/demo this operation but i was busy with other groups

Are there any immediate actions arising from this workshop?	as this was the last workshop before the holidays - and by the time i see them again the dragon will need to be finished- it was great to get their input on some of the smaller details. The Dragon and the Koi installation has been identified as a priority to be completed asap. It will nice for the students to see how their ideas come to life and then they can be there for the execution of the Koi Kites

Dragon Body layout i the space

After discussion with Daniel re making the dragon's pose more dynamic - essentially raising the front 1/4 of body off the ground- i started the process of the fabricating body by laying 1:1 markings on the ground of the plan view of the installation.

Dragon Body Frame construction

From here I laid out a basic frame from the ground up, making sure to break the whole down into components that would fit out the door it was particularly difficult to conceptualise the undulating snake-shaped body (i was trying to keep track of where his spine was) while breaking it up into transportable (portalible*) components

* I realised i've developed PTSDish type twitch about making sure things I make things that will go thru doors (portalible [sic]) - Im somewhat scarred by the embarrassment of not being able to get an assemblage out of the doors of the workshop, a trauma that is usually experienced in front or a collection of colleagues who are assembled to help you move it to its destination… and that sometimes results in the unceremonial amputation of a limb or butchering of a part of the object which you have taken many hours of careful work to make.

Body strapping

Once a general shape for each frame was complete, i began to “Strap” the frame. Straps of double ply cardboard, cut with the direction of the corro, can create nice organic curves between 2 or more anchor points, resisting to a point, more lateral force than straps cut at right angles to the corro. These straps can therefore be used to soften the frame and provide a scaffold that scales/ skin/ external sheet to be glued to. Its probably not until this strapping is completed that other people can see the final shape the sculpture will take. Strapping also is also an opportunity to square up and strengthen frames.

Scale Layout

The outside skin of the dragon will be made of scales and spines down the back. The head would not fit on the head and the head still go out the door so these will need to be applied until the dragon is installed. As such the limit of scales/ spines need to be laid out along the body.

Scale Prep

CNC router with the drag knife attachment was used to cut out bulk scales. The scales need to be distressed, glued and trimmed

Scale Application

Scales start at the nose and point back to the tail, a stylistic decision made by the young people on 9 Sept workshop. Scales were applied to the head, pretty much one at a time. But Tiffany has found a faster way of applying them, she glues them together in a sheet. reinforces them on the back with a scrap of single ply corro or corro off the role. This makes it easier to secure them and “you're not fighting gravity as much” glue_to_sheet_of_dragon_scales_.mp4 reinforce_scale_sheet.mp4

Teeth Prep

We'll need 30-40 teeth. Teeth are made by rolling/ scrunching and taping Corro off the role into a conical shape (as per the Students design 9 Sept) after this they are covered in the baking paper with a distress texture. Pauline and Coutney found that the fastest way to do this was to precut the paper into 50cm sheets and wrap and hot glue to the teeth in a flat sheet. Then scrunch up a 2nd sheet glue and wrap this.

Gums, pallet & gums

Gums were mad by

tracing the profile of the top and lower jaws
making hand sized loops to glue around the perimeter of the mouth,
covering these loops with Corro off the roll to create the gum shape
gums and soft pallet will be covered in Geami packaging paper.
Tongue was made by glueing around the perimeter of a top and bottom sheet of tounge shape and stuffing the shape like you would a stuffed toy to give it a 3rd dimension. tongue will probably covered in brown paper to give is a similar but different look to the Geami paper.
Gums, teeths tongue will all be assemble together as a single component that can be installed into the mouth at installation

Spine Prep

Spines will be added to the sculpture at the installation stage, as all but one of the components requiring spines will make the components to big to be Portalible [sic]. We will do a test run on the Tail as this is smaller ( and from this create an esytimate of how long it will take to apply these.

Spines, the great majority of which will be 20- 30cm high (a few extra large ones and medium size on the head) are being made from a template and covered in the same way as the teeth. We estimate that there will be about 120 Spines down the back of our beaste

What did you think was successful about the workshop?	Students got a sense of the scale of their work by visiting the Gallery and imagining it in the space as well as taking measurements. Students also collaborated well once we got them to cut up their individual works and collage them.
What did you learn about the workshop?	Some of the children needed some guidance in getting into the collaboration mindset.
