In this session participants will introduction to 3D printing, and designing for 3d printing in Tinkercad. Participants will design and print a bead or small talisman for a necklace. The Facilitator like to discuss spread of 3d printing what it might mean for distributed manufacturing in the future. You could juxtapoz this with the social history beads jewelry and talisman while working on their designs.

Some people think we might have 3d printers in our homes soon. What would it mean if you could print anything you wanted at any time?

beads are little decorative objects with a hole in them so they can be threaded together. But Why? CONTEXT: (5mins)

What you will get out of today?

By the end of the session you will have had a taste-test of:

● recording short vocal grabs in a DAW (Ableton Live 9),

● exporting these out of the DAW as audio files,

● importing recorded audio files into DJ software (Serato DJ),

● physically manipulating audio files using DJ software and a connected DJ controller and

● completing a group scratch track project!

How did we get here?

Some background to Scratching, Digital DJing and DAWs:

● Background of Analogue DJ Cutting/Scratching/Manipulating (80s)

● Move to Digital DJing (00s) > more possibilities (eg bedroom remixes, mashups etc can now be played out)

● Increase in ‘all-in-one’ DJ Controllers (10s) > portability > more possibilities: pads, FX, loops

● DAWS > Similar history > Ableton Live developed for live performance and production DEMO: (5mins)

● Brief demonstration of main functions in Serato DJ (crates, loading a track, display, tempo/pitch manipulation, cue points)

● Brief demonstration of manipulating a phrase versus manipulating a longer vowel sound.

RECORD AUDIO (10mins)

● Each participant records two audio grabs. One is a word or short phrase (eg name, nickname, call to action ‘let’s go!’). Some stock words and phrases provided if participants prefer. Other is a longer vowel sound (eg ‘heeeeey’).

EXPORT AUDIO from Ableton Live 9 as WAV or AIFF. (5mins)

● Export audio as individual files or whole session as one file (dependent on participant numbers/time).

IMPORT AUDIO into SERATO DJ (5mins)

● Quick demonstration of loading a file, adding cue points.

MANIPULATE AUDIO (15mins)

● Participants each take turns manipulating the audio samples they have created, then we’ll record these manipulations back into Ableton Live. EXPORT AUDIO out of Ableton Live 9 (10mins) ● Upload group project to The Edge SoundCloud and/or convert track to mp3 and email track to participants and/or drop onto USB sticks, dependent on time.

NB: From memory, The Edge has a small audio interface I could use to connect between my laptop and studio monitors in recording studio. Might be easiest to set up this way and connect external screen for larger viewing. Can discuss this further with Sunny.

FUN PALACE 2018 Carboard Claw

Grab some attention with this robot claw that works using the science of hydraulics, made with syringes, paper fasteners and zip ties.

Learning Outcomes

Participants construct a hydraulic claw from pre-cut cardboard parts, syringes and fixings. No tools or glue are required, other than side cutters. The design involves using hydraulics, linkages and levers to make a useful tool.

Session Plan

5 min: Show the participants a completed claw, and demonstrate how to use it. Discuss how hydraulics make the device work, and elicit other examples from group members. Emphasise that hydraulic systems rely on containing a non-compressable liquid (and so avoiding bubbles is important), and why industrial machines use oil rather than water (because the much high vapour pressure of water, it tends to form bubbles by cavitation when in use and this reduces the transfer of force)

15 min: lead the participants in assembling the claw (the sequence is important - follow the guide in the file below)

5 min: troubleshoot as necessary (avoid bubbles and leaks, the mechanism might be stiff to start, and if this does not improve, try loosening the paper joiners to allow free movement)

Facilitator Notes

What other examples of a hydraulic grabbing device have you seen? (excavators, robots, tree harvesters etc) Why use hydraulics? Explain how one-way valves make a car jack possible, and a how the force applied by your arm is transmitted throughout the liquid. What about nature? (Spiders legs and squid)

Materials Req

1 pre-cut cardboard claw kit
2 x 3mL syringes
90mm x 4mmID plastic tubing
1 x 100mm zip tie
1 x 150mm zip tie
4 x split pin-type paper fasteners (20 - 25mm long)

Equipment Req

Side cutters (to trim zip ties)
2 or 3 jars of water (to fill syringes)

Assembly Instructions

Fill one syringe with water, invert and remove any bubbles by depressing the plunger.
Attach plastic tubing firmly, and fill completely with water from the syringe.
Remove syringe, and re-fill with water making sure no bubbles are present as before.
Attach water-filled syringe to the tubing.
Attach the other syringe to the other end of the tubing (make sure it is completely depressed before attaching – avoid any bubbles).
Locate handle piece, and fold neatly along the score to make an open, 3-sided rectangular tube.
Insert flanges of one syringe into the slots in the handle piece, and fold the handle around so that the opposite slot engages with the other flange. Secure in place with the 100mm zip-tie.
Locate one side of the claw base, and fit the unattached syringe into the slot.
Place the other side of the claw base over the syringe, and fix in place with the 150mm zip-tie.
Slide one of the claw arms between an open end of the handle, align holes, and fix in place with a paper fastener. Do not squeeze the fastener too tight – it needs to be able to slide freely along the slot.
Do the same on the other side with the other claw arm.
Fit one half of the central cardboard piston end under the syringe plunger, align holes and hold in place by inserting an un-opened paper fastener through each hole.
Mount the top half of the piston over the fasteners, and onto the syringe. Fix in place with the paper fasteners, but do not squeeze too tightly so movement can still occur.
Push and pull the syringe at the end of the handle a few times to free up the mechanism. If movement is still too stiff, loosen the paper fasteners.
If vigorous use or misadventure causes a leak in the system, you will need to cut the bottom zip-tie and open the handle so that the tubing can be reattached firmly. Refilling the syringe (and removing bubbles) may also be necessary.

Participants will be guided through simple disassembly of a laptop using tools provided. By removing and replacing battery, RAM and hard drive, they will have an opportunity to overcome fear of damaging the device, and also ask questions of the facilitator to extend their knowledge. Information about sourcing replacement parts can be provided during informal discussions.

Session Plan

It's time to get started!

Place your laptop upside down on the desk in front of you, so the underside is facing you.

Static

Before you touch anything inside your computer discharge any static electrical charge you might have on your body, as static 'shock' can damage electronic components. This is as simple as touching a large metal object before touching any components.

Inside The Back Casing

By the end of the workshop you'll be able to name and describe the easily replaceable parts in this laptop.

Battery

Let's start by removing the battery, which is a very easy process;

Slide the battery release latch, which will release the battery from the battery bay.
Lift the battery out of the bay and place to the side.

Let's look at what information we can find on the battery;

If your laptop battery is no longer working, only powering on when plugged in, then replacing the battery is one thing you can do easily to continue the life of our portable computer.

Inside The Battery Bay

After we've removed the battery, we can see a lot more information inside including model and serial numbers, regulatory info and possibly a sticker outlining the operating system originally installed.

Inside the battery bay there is also a slot to insert a SIM card (subscriber identity module), similar to how you insert a SIM card into your mobile phone.
The SIM slot is for WWAN (mobile broadband). Phones are typically provisioned differently so your phone SIM probably won't work properly in the SIM slot.

Remove Back Case

Now let's remove the back case component and see what more we can get at. While the computer still has the backside facing you, remove the 2 screws from the back casing so we can locate the Hard Drive and other easily replaceable items.

We'll need a small Phillips head screwdriver to remove the 2 screws holding it in place. Don't lose these screws so put them in a safe spot, they are very small!
Slide the plastic casing off to detach from the computer.

Let's now take a look inside at what we can easily access.

Hard Drive

The hard drive - also called a is a permanent store of information or data. This is where we will install the Operating System later, and where you will store your files like music, movies or documents. The amount of information stored, or capacity is measured in gigabytes.

With the back cover off we can remove the hard drive easily, it should look like a small silver box (pictured).
Undo the screws holding the HD in place, slide the HD forward then pull out using the plastic tab that should be attached.
Lift the drive straight up and out.
The silver bracket enclosing the drive can be removed if you intend to replace the hard drive.

The hard drive label should give you all the info you need to upgrade or replace the drive:

The capacity in gigabytes
The form factor (the physical size measured in inches)
The speed at which it spins
The manufacturer

Random Access Memory (RAM)

RAM is where your computer stores data it uses to run programs. Unlike your hard drive, the data in RAM is gone when you turn off your computer.

To remove the RAM, open the silver brackets holding it in place by pulling them out slightly, then the RAM will tilt up and you can slide out by grabbing the edges and pulling it out gently.
Slide the RAM out
Once the ram is free don't touch on gold parts. Why? Your skin cells and sweat can cause corrosion
Also don't touch the memory chips. Why? Static electrical discharge can easily damage or destroy memory chips.
Examine the label for clues about the replacing or upgrading your RAM. To find your RAM in a shop you will need to match the module name which is written on the stick, to the standard name which is what the RAM is sold as.

RTC Battery

The RTC Battery (or CMOS battery) is a battery that powers the Real Time Clock (hence the acronym RTC) to run all the time, even when the computer is turned off.
These batteries can last up to 10 years, if your computer is powered-on all the time, its battery will last much longer.
If your computer is losing its time or date settings, or you are receiving a message CMOS Read Error, CMOS Checksum Error, or CMOS Battery Failure, the CMOS battery needs to be replaced.

WLAN Module

The WLAN module is your wifi.
Both Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) and WLAN (wireless local area network) mean the same — they both refer to a wireless network.

This workshop is for 8+ and hands will come in contact with borax. There is a need to chat about this at the beginning so that no-one puts this in their mouth or hands that have come in contact.

Session Plan

10 children and parents will come at a time to make flubber bouncy balls.

step 1: everyone gets a cup (with cornflour and glue in it) and then gets to choose a colour (food dye)

step 2: given a small amount of borax and water mixture

step 3: mix using

Step 4: Take it out of cup and play time

Step 5: One by one invited ti dunk into the big plastic bowl full of water and borax mixture.

Step 6: Use hands to roll the mixture into a ball.

Try it out and bounce and take home.

Ask everyone to clean their hands (borax)

Ingredients ½ Cup Warm Water

1 Tb Borax

1 Tb of Cornstarch

2 Tb White Liquid Glue

Food coloring

Instructions In a cup mix the warm water and the borax. In another cup mix the glue, cornstarch, and food coloring. Pour the glue mixture into the water-borax cup. The glue mixture will harden after 10 seconds; use a fork to take it out of the water. If the glue mixture is still sticky, squish it with your hands and dip it back in the water. Roll the mixture in your hands to make a ball. The more you handle the mixture the firmer it will become. You are done!

Cogs, a motor and a clever electronic circuit are put together to turn your finger power into light.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will construct a manually powered gear-driven generator with a Joule thief circuit. This kit requires no tools, glue or soldering.

Session Plan

3 min - Show the participants a completed Steam punk LED device , and demonstrate how to use it. Discussion about how the device converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. 55 min - Guide the participants in constructing the device. Ensure each LED lights up after attaching the motor to the circuit board and before attaching the Joule thief to the middle plate. 2 min - Allow participants to use their device, troubleshooting if necessary.

Facilitator notes

This device is an energy converter that takes kinetic energy as an input, and produces electrical energy, and subsequently light.

Using a large gear to drive the small cog attached to the generator increases the rpm to a point where the output voltage is useful. The motor used can act as a generator because it contains permanent magnets set around coils of conductive wire which are attached to the shaft of the motor. When the shaft spins, these coils are moved through a magnetic field and a voltage is induced in the wire, available through the black and red tails on the motor/generator.

Turning this available energy into something useful is due to the Joule Thief circuit, and in particular the toroid. In simple terms, as energy moves through the wire wrapped around the ferrite toroid, a magnetic field is induced in the toroid, which rapidly collapses as the transistor reaches a threshold voltage and switches on. The collapsing magnetic field induces a spike of higher voltage energy in the secondary toroid wire, which is directed through the LED and causes it to glow if the threshold is reached. As this occurs, the transistor is turned off, and the entire cycle begins again. Because this happens very rapidly (about 200,000 times a second, depending on the specific characteristics of the resistor and transistor), our eyes see a continuous light rather than a flicker.

A useful analogy is to recall how clamping and then releasing a garden hose can cause a trickle of water to gush forth, though only for a moment. The Joule Thief achieves this effect repeatedly, and much faster by using well designed electronic circuitry. Instructions

Step One: Building the backbone

Begin by assembling the Top plate - the bits you will need look like this:

Take out the four long screws - these go in the corner holes as shown.
Make sure the plate looks like the image, with the top uppermost (you can tell the bottom of this plate because it has some etching on it) . The screws must go in from the top.

Thread a nut onto each screw as you insert it, and this will prevent things from falling out when you move the plate.
You can use the wooden spanner provided to tighten the nuts.

Step Two: Getting the first cog ready

When you have got the corner screws in place, stand the plate face-up again, and find the large acrylic cog.

This cog has a small spacer in the center, which you will need later, but you can push out the waste pieces from between the spokes.
If you twist them as shown, there is less chance of breaking the cog (but be careful).

Now you can push out the spacer, and peel the protective paper from all the bits.

Step Three: Attaching the first cog

Find the short screw, and slip the little spacer on to it. Then push the screw through the hole in the middle of the big cog.

Now insert the screw (with the cog attached) though the smallest hole on the top plate. Thread a nut on from underneath, and tighten with your wooden spanner.

Give the cog a spin to make sure it is moving freely.

Step Four: Get the Middle plate ready

Locate the middle plate (it has the rectangular hole), and the packet of circuit parts. When you open the parts packet, these are the bits you need for now:

Take up the LED, and you should see that one leg is longer than the other.
LEDs only work when electricity flows through them in the right direction, and the different legs help you to insert the LED correctly (the long leg is the positive terminal).

The LED legs go through the two smallest holes on the middle board, and the long leg hole is marked with an “L”.
Push the LED legs through, then bend them apart a bit on the back to stop it falling out.

Step Five: Winding the toroid

The ring shaped object in your kit is actually a magnet, called a toroid. To make it work in this circuit, it needs to have two strands of wire wrapped around it.
Using paired wire makes it easy to avoid having overlapping wires, which would stop it from working.

First, cut a length of paired wire about 210mm long. It is easiest to strip both ends of the wires at this stage, but this can also be done later.
To start the winding, thread the toroid onto the wire, about 3cm from one end, and bend the wire around as shown below:

Now take the long end of the wire, while keeping hold of the toroid with your other hand, and loop the wire back through the centre of the toroid.

Then, pull the wire tight.

Continue threading the wire through, until there are 4 or 5 loops around the toroid. More loops actually reduces the effectiveness of this device, and it will still work with 4.

When you have finished the loops, you can trim the ends of the wire to about 3cm if necessary (scissors will work).

If it has not been done for you, separate the protruding wires (use a knife or cutters, or just pull them apart with your fingers).
Do this on both ends.

If the ends of the wires have not been stripped, do it now. Look closely and you will see one wire has a black stripe, while the other is all white (or grey).
Take a plain wire from one side of the wound toroid, and a black striped wire from the OTHER side, and twist them together.
You end up with this:

Step Six: make the Joule thief circuit

The coloured circuit diagram has holes to take the parts of the circuit (you can push out any hanging chads with a pen).

Start with the transistor

The transistor is the small black thing with 3 legs. It goes in the blue holes.
Like the LED, the transistor only works when it is attached in the right orientation. If you pick it up, you will feel that it has a flat side, and a curved side (just like the blue diagram).

Insert the transistor so the curved side matches the blue picture (you might need to separate the legs a bit first).
In the picture below, this means the curved side is at the top, and the flat side faces the toroid.

Push the transistor down so it is close to the surface of the circuit board, and bend the legs apart at the back to hold it in place.

Then add a resistor

Now find the resistor - this only has two legs, and it works which ever way you put it in. Resistors can be brown or blue, and have stripes.

Bend the legs a bit, and insert them through the brown holes. Push it down onto the board, too.

When you look at the back of the circuit board, two wires are now adjacent: the middle one from the transistor and one from the resistor.
Twist these wires together as close to the board as possible. Then fold the twisted pair over and make sure they do not touch any other wires.

Now add the wound toroid

The printed circuit has a place for the toroid, outlined in green. take the plain single wire, and push the end through the hole at the end of the outlined green line.

Look on the back, and you will see this wire is beside the other leg of the resistor. Twist these two together.

The striped single wire from the toroid follows the solid green line, and pushes through next to a transistor leg.
Insert the striped wire, and twist these two together (bend them away so nothing is touching).

The joined toroid wires go through the hole at the bottom on the diagram, and can hang free until the next step.

Step Seven: Hooking up the motor

Locate the motor supplied, and the packet of small wooden bits. Open the packet, and find the small wooden cog.

Push the wooden cog firmly on to the motor shaft (it has to be a tight fit).

Take the black motor wire through the hole at the end of the black line on the circuit.
It comes through next to the joined toroid wires, and you can twist all these together.
(The cog is missing from the following images, but should already be on your motor)

Now take the red wire on the motor, and push it through the hole at the end of the red line on the circuit.

Twist it together with the other transistor leg that it is next to.

Step Eight: Attaching the Joule Thief to the Middle plate

The LED you put into the middle plate now needs to be hooked into the Joule Thief circuit (and this is a bit fiddly).
The two LED legs go through the orange holes on the circuit, with the long leg going through the hole marked “long”.
It helps to straighten the LED legs a bit first, and then you have to guide both legs through their respective holes at the same time.

As you can see, the motor fits into the round hole, and the toroid will fit into the rectangular hole when everything is in place.
The LED legs come through next to pairs of twisted wires on either side of the circuit, and each leg is twisted onto the adjacent pair.

Make sure that none of the twisted wires are touching another lot of twisted wires, and test your circuit by giving the cog on the motor a sharp spin (anticlockwise).
The LED should flick on, but if it does not, try spinning the cog in the other direction (remember: the LED only works with current flowing in one direction).
A sharp spin can best be made by grasping the cog tightly between thumb and middle finger, and then snapping your fingers.

troubleshooting

If the LED still does not light up, check that there are no loose wires, and that nothing is touching where it shouldn't.
Most times, poorly twisted wires are the problem, but sometimes the transistor or LED may be inserted back to front.
It is not recommended to twist the wires with pliers since the wires may break (especially the transistor legs). Use great care if disassembly is required.

Do not go further if you can't get the LED to glow - it is hard to solve circuit problems once everything is assembled.

Step Nine: attaching the middle plate

Turn the top plate upside down, and mount the middle plate onto the corner screws, making sure the small cog engages with the large cog.
There is a 5mm hole in the top plate to take the protruding LED.

In the packet of wooden bits, there should be 12 small tubular spacers (you might have to pop them out of their carrier first). Put three spacers onto each screw (even though only two per leg are shown).

Step Ten: Attach the bottom plate

Find the bottom plate, and also the two circular wooden motor supports from the pack of wooden bits.
Place the motor supports so the holes in these pieces sit over the bump on the bottom of the motor.

Without dislodging the motor supports, guide the bottom plate onto the corner screws.

You may need to press down firmly on the bottom plate to attach nuts to the corner screws (pressure also helps keep the motor support in place).
Use the wooden spanner to tighten the nuts.

Assembly is finished, and spinning the large cog in the correct direction (clockwise) with your finger should make the LED glow.

Print your own design on a t-shirt with inks that change colour with temperature and join the 80s fashion revival.

Learning Outcomes

Participants are able to print their own thermocolour T-Shirt. The process involves using thermochromatic pigment to create coloured ink that will change depending on the ambient temperature. Participants should be able to explain what happens when the print is exposed to heat.

Session Plan

10 min - Show the participants a printed shirt and demonstrate how the thermochromatic pigment works (heating of the pigment changes the colour). Before doing this ask the group what they think will happen to the print when the T-Shirt is heated?
5 min - Guide the participants through mixing the ink formula, following the directions listed below.
15 min - Guide the participants whilst printing onto the T-Shirt. Once printed allow them to dry on the required drying rack or clothes line.

Facilitator Notes

Thermochromatic pigment changes colour the hotter it gets. Working with heat reactive colour pigments to create prints that will react to ambient temperature change.
Where else have you seen a colour changing print caused by heat? (Novelty mugs).
Thermochromatic pigment is similar to that of a thermometer but instead of expanding or contracting to symbolise change they change in colour.
When the molecules are hot they stay really close together reflecting light a certain way. When the material cools down the molecules start to separate changing the way it reflects light.

Instructions

Mix Pigment and Medium to Make Ink

Measure out 1 or 2 level teaspoons of medium on to the mixing board/glass with a palette knife. Make a valley/depression in the middle of your chunk of medium.
Measure out 1 or 2 level sherbet spoons of pigment into the depression.
Carefully fold the pigment into the medium until it is a consistent mix.

Printing

Using the soft rubber brayer, roll out the ink onto you mixing board/glass until the ink is spread thin across an area of the board. If you have the right consistency ink and it is spread correctly the roller will start making a sticky sound as you roll over the ink. Once you have this, you are ready to start printing.
Load the positive of your block with ink.
Place a sheet of foam inside the T-Shirt to avoid ink transferring to the back.
Line up the block on the T-shirt.
Lower and align the print block down onto the T-Shirt.
Press the block down with your body weight
Carefully pull the block off the shirt and admire your handy work.
Carefully remove the T-Shirt and allow to dry.

Reflections Learnings

Overall the activity was very successful and very popular with both the children and the parents. On the day it was raining so the activity was shifted inside. Due to space constraints inside The Edge, the activity was split between the walkway. This proved challenging with the number of people attending the printing but also the other activities at the event. Because of this issue I had extra help to ensure that the inked templates were not dropped or made contact with passers by.
Participants were also allowed to create their own templates using foam sheets. We were originally going to use spray glue and cardboard to stick the foam to the board to make the templates easier to print but because the activity was moved inside we were unable to use the spray glue. Younger children found this more challenging so they continued to use the premade templates. The activity is worth doing again at future Fun Palace events but would be easier if the event was outside. Providing the T-Shirts was handy however in the later sessions the range of sizes had slowly lessened causing problems for some participants as they were unable to have the correct size T-Shirt. This problem could be eliminated with participants bringing their own size shirt to the event.

A few notes.

I have rotated it 90 degrees this time to suit the Multicam. the design is designed for seventeen mm Ply - NOT 15mm the tool is set to 6.35 Dennis wants to circular cuts in the top - not the large rectangles - so some - all - parts will need to be moved to outside the top piece, but there is room-a-plenty.

I would just draw the circles in V carve - its very easy.

this is a picture of a sculpture made for Expo 88 - Paradigm was constructed in stainless steel and towered over the Expo 88 site at 30 metres high. It was based on the double helix of the DNA molecule. During Expo 88, Paradigm housed 66 aeroplane landing lights that created a mesmerising night-time display. Paradigm was the world’s first sculpture to be designed with the aid of a computer, and the world’s first to have a computerised lighting system installed. You can NOW find a small piece of this sculpture at the entrance to SLQ, very close to the book shop.

This activity was set up in the auditorium at The Edge with some chairs to sit in around the activity. The chairs were a way for people to be able to sit for awhile and make dna and chat as well as to create it's own space so as not to bleed into the other areas (as there were 5 other activities happening in the space). The chairs worked well, the DNA was great. The only thing was that it did not grow as big as was expected. It did not become the largest DNA. The following would have helped to make it more visible and interacted in much more (as there really was so much going on in the auditorium)

- A large sign that was interesting and had crochet around on it

- some kind of structure that the DNA could be presented onto (this was an initial idea that was thought of but dropped) and seen

- Suggested ways for getting more people involved at once in making the DNA. For example: one person weaving one person holding it up and one person being able to wrap and present it on the structure. Then swapping around.
