After learning the basics on Tinkercad the group will focus on designing a small object that will become a badge to wear.

While the badge is printing young people will complete the induction paperwork so that they can book and use the printers in their own time.

Once the badge is printed a back will be attached to make it a badge.

There were a number of people that signed up for this workshop, very few showed up on the day. They were mainly interested in the game mechanic side of things. After unpacking these for a long while we were all able to pull together some ideas around the board design and some icons that could be there to distinguish between large and small. We also worked on the size that the hexes could so as to fit on the board.

It came up during the session that it would be great to be able to share the game and what is happening from week to week for those that cannot attend in person. A &lt;em&gt;Slack&lt;/em&gt; group has been set up where people who sign up to the sessions will be invited to join and contribute to and continue the dialogue.

In the previous iteration the building were 3D cutouts. They looked impressive and were sturdy but took a long time to fabricate. Due to their size, they would also be difficult to replicate in a space that was not as well equipped as The Edge. To remedy this, the buildings this go around will be 2D, still mounted on large hex and supported by bracing structure on the back side. This should reduce cost, time and complexity.
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
To address State Library of Queensland collections, the buildings will be inspired by classic Queensland architecture. A process with community will identify and design building silhouettes reflecting the source material. This process could be implemented similarly in other communities.
&lt;/p&gt;

It is estimated that the design process could be delivered in two sessions, with a further two sessions in fabrication and construction.

In 2017 SLQ delivered the Cardboard Kaiju project. A part of the larger One Last Apocalypse program, &lt;strong&gt;Cardboard Kaiju&lt;/strong&gt; was essentially a large scale - not quite life size - board-game. The key objective of the game being preventing the kaiju (Japanese for Strange Beast and genre of international monster films), now named Danger Noodle, from destroying a city made of corrugated cardboard. The game framework was card based, the monster designed and fabricated by the community then delivered as a one day event at The Edge.
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
In 2018 The Edge team will be redeveloping and reiterating the idea to coincide with the GoPlay! gaming event. A new game framework will be devised, city designed and of course a new monster conceptualised. The aim is to improve on last year and deliver the best possible version of the concept with an eye for replication in other places and spaces across Queensland. Community involvement will be imperative to the success of the process.

We are initially in conversation with Dylan Shearer, a local game designer who has delivered programming for us in the past. He is willing to come onboard, which is great.

Moving into the new iteration and based on some learnings from Cardboard Kaiju I suggest we go 2.5D, cut out cartoon style as it is easier to cut out and cheaper. &lt;strong&gt;I am going to upload and example here over the weekend if I get a chance.&lt;/strong&gt; This should mean it can be cut quickly and the design process with community around this should be dead simple. &lt;strong&gt;That is another process I will write up when I get a chance&lt;/strong&gt;.

The last time around we were also using bespoke hardware solutions to interact with the Raspberry Pi platform which cost money and represents a barrier. Resolving that hurdle will be imperative in proceeding with the project. Breadboards, ICs and resistors should be the extent of it if we can manage.

These cards will not only include damage and special destruction abilities, but it will also have some form of defense or damage reduction to slow down the players, as well as “Gain extra action” cards to give this player a further edge

●	The game runs with very little input from players
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
●	There is little strategy to the Kaiju. It just moves to the most contact and there is really no need for a Kaiju player in its current state

●	The players have to survive past the Kaiju deck, but have very little interaction with the Kaiju deck → This means the players can’t actually win the game, only lose it.
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
●	The same can be said for the Kaiju player. The Kaiju does not interact too much with the players, as most of the player interaction is done via instant cards - something that the Kaiju player doesn’t have control over
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
●	Players enjoy interacting with each other but don’t really get to interact with each other
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
●	Player feedback during the playthrough reinforced these points to me
&lt;/p&gt;

●	Cards required a translation sheet to resolve (re: “Resolve the top card of the Kaiju deck as if it was yours”)

This gives the Kaiju player a strategic element to how they attack the river, while also limiting how much damage they can via the Rampage mechanic (which we will be keeping because it is badass)

Cards will no longer be listed in relation to a Deck of standard playing cards. Instead, all cards will clearly say what they do and any cards referencing cards the other team’s cards will be removed. Players will not need to look up what a card does.
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
The cards will also have one of 3 card frames, artistic design used to identify the card. The three frames are: Kaiju Deck, Defender Deck, Instant Card (found in Defender Deck)
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
&lt;strong&gt;Players winning the Game&lt;/strong&gt;
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
Players need to be able to win the game, not just run through the game and maybe lose. So the following major changes will be made to assist in the process of winning the game:
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
1.	The Kaiju Deck will be rebuilt. The Kaiju deck will now be enhanced in its damage and special abilities, as well as the amount of cards increased. This Deck will now act as the Kaiju’s health, meaning any damage done by the defenders will discard cards from the top of the Kaiju Deck.
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
2.	The Kaiju player will gain a hand. To give the Kaiju player a form of strategy to what they do, they will also draw a hand of 4 cards. These cards will not only include damage and special destruction abilities, but it will also have some form of defence or damage reduction to slow down the players, as well as “Gain extra action” cards to give this player a further edge
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
3.	Defender Deck will be rebuilt. The most notable change will be the inclusion of damage and defence cards. Damage cards will flip cards off the top of the Kaiju deck and reduce that deck (as it is now the Kaiju’s health). The defender deck will now have targeted defence cards so that, rather than outright preventing the kaiju player from doing anything for a turn, they will instead be able to defend specific buildings from the Kaiju’s attacks, possibly directing the Kaiju into further traps.

Cardboard Kaiju is a community engagement and capacity building program that consists of a series of workshops that focus on skills development and creative collaboration.
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
The Cardboard Kaiju game was first developed in 2017 as part of the One Last Apocalypse Program and it was experienced as a collaborative life size board game experience.  
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
Taking on the feedback from 2017, The Edge redeveloped the game in 2018 as a table top version with sound and animation elements. Below is the process that was taken, detailing both the public and outreach programs that occurred. 
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
After this process there is now a game kit that you can download from this wiki with all you need to play the game in your community!
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
This kit can be remixed so that you can work with your community to design your town. For example you could add design elements to the Kaiju, replace the river with an iconic landmark in your community and re-design the buildings to reflect your community. Or you can play the game as is along with other collaborative games and run it as a game night series. Last year the buildings were 3D mounted on large hexagonal game pieces for assembling the city. Buildings (and the Kaiju) were human sized (1.5 - 2.5 m high), and an auditorium was available for the play.  This presented some issues regards time to fabrication, complexity in fabrication and (comparative) expense in materials. Moving into this iteration we will be looking at 2/2.5D and tabletop size so that it easier to cut and cheaper if you wanted to go full scale.

The hand tools induction took longer than expected, however everyone was focused and learnt heaps- there was some frustration with the small detailed work it required , however, the group worked through this and all were able to make a badge that lights up.
