I think a good way to define emergent literacy is by giving some examples - children engaging in reading books with parents and caregivers, learning how to hold a book, learning to write and draw by scribbling, playing with the sounds of language through rhymes and songs and developing a love of literacy. Emergent literacy builds solid foundations which lead to early literacy.
