Explain to him that the internet doesn't have to all be about filing in forms and such. As he has a smart phone he can use it to search things that interest him as well. He can also download useful or fun apps he would find of interest. Show him a few of these. Including the Centrelink App, to make accessing his centerlink information easier. Then help him to set up his centrelink account & how to use job-site websites & apps. such as Seek.
Shelley Kettlety, 2021/04/22 10:47
Initially help him with navigating to the Centrelink website and a little assistance to get him started. Advise him of various tech training to help him out, and a lesson on a Job Searching online.
Dom, 2021/04/10 14:42
Start by showing him how to navigate to the Centrelink website and walk him through the process of signing up. When that's done, demonstrate how to search the web (to navigate back to Centrelink and to search for jobs) and throw in a thing or two related to his personal interests at the same time to show him the breadth of the internet.
Georgia, 2021/04/01 10:33
Help Darryl understand that many people feel this way and there are lots of people that can help him to get used to being online and feel comfortable using the internet. Assist him with setting up a Centrelink account, or write out the steps for him to follow when he gets home if he doesn't have all of the information on him at that point in time. Show him how to access various websites to apply for jobs and show him how to search in the various websites for jobs that suit his skill set. Make sure he has access to phone numbers and a list of places to go/contact if he gets stuck so he feels he has someone to reach out to in order to get past any frustrations.

Make sure that Darryl has your support and understanding, reassure him he is not alone and many people feel the same way. Assist Darryl in setting up a My Gov account via his phone and then explore other ways we could assist, whether by showing him job search sites or by simply showing him how to navigate the internet via his phone.
Jasswant, 2021/03/21 17:35
Be calm and would try to understand what his needs are at the moment with computers, depending on that its best that he gets assistance setting up a myGov account for his centrelink and finds online groups that cater to his job requirements and interests to talk to those who have similar mindsets.
Robina Cullen, 2021/03/04 12:32
Ask about hobbies/interests, and show him how he can search for these. Assist with setting up Daryll's mygov account, and show him how to navigate the site.
Mark, 2021/02/28 20:30
I would try and discern Darryl's interests first. If sport, you could show him how to follow fixtures or match results. I would perhaps look at helping him join an online group or organization that interests him. This way, he becomes familiar with the idea of signing up online without immediately sending him off to myGov. This could then be extended to job sites. I agree with another post here: small steps are important. Don't overwhelm and make the experience enjoyable.

I think finding a new job will be at the top of Daryll's priorities. Show him the Seek website first; help him find a job he wants to apply for and then help him type up a digital resume. Then, show him the community noticeboards on Facebook, which sometimes have jobs posted. Alternatively, explain the process of applying for jobs online, so he understands he will have to do a bunch of tasks in order to apply for a job (create an email address, type up a resume, fill out online forms, attach files to application, etc).
Hannah, 2020/10/06 12:47

Show Darryl job sites such as Seek and assist with form filling
Natasha, 2020/08/28 16:15
Suggest: Face to face training in the first instance and then group training if more comfortable with a service provider eg Library, job network. Apps that can be downloaded to his smartphone for convenience. Explore suitable social media platforms to create a professional profile eg LinkedIn
Susana Hughes, 2021/07/13 18:24
Agree totally, and during face to face training he must have made friends who are in the similar situation. If not, the mentor should be able to encourage and support him on his problem.
Tammy, 2020/08/18 15:23
Find out the interests and hobbies of the individual person and show him websites that are linked to these subjects. Encourage participation in forums and email with people in a similar situation. Suggest beginner training on websites that already have self-paced learning set up and ready to use. Suggest being part of a group that already uses the library as a venue for training.
